Syech Puji, Pujiono Cahyo & Underage Lust

Oct 24th, 2008, in IM Posts, by

The controversy over a politician-cleric's marriage to an underage girl in Semarang.

43 year old Pujiono Cahyo Widayanto/Widianto, aka Syech/Syekh Puji, the head of an Islamic boarding school (Ponpes Miftahul Jannah) in Bedono, Jambu, Semarang, Central Java, in August 2008 informally married (nikah siri) Lutfiana Ulfa, 11 years and 10 months old, who had just begun studies at a local junior high school, but has now taken up wifely duties at home.

Sheikh Puji is a very wealthy man, being the owner of PT Sinar Lendoh Terang (Silenter), a handicrafts exporter, and appeared in the news in August for distributing 1.3 billion rupiah (about $130,000) in zakat or charity to the poor. His first wife is 26 years old. In 2005 he was a candidate for the Partai Amanat Nasional (PAN) in a regency election but withdrew from the race at the last moment, and has long been involved in local politics. suaramerdeka

It's a deal

He also intends to marry two other girls, aged 9 and 7. Of these latter two, Syech Puji says that neither has begun menstruating, so he will refrain from interfering with them, while Ulfa has already entered puberty.

Syech Puji believes his actions have a legitimate basis in Islam, considering that the prophet Muhammad married the 7 year old Aisha.

I'm not just doing what I like, it's based in religion. It's in accordance with the prophet's teaching. You can marry a 7 year old if you like but you can't have relations with her until she starts menstruating.

Clerics' Council/Majelis Ulama Indonesia (MUI) leader Umar Shihab condemned the marriage to Ulfa:

Men should marry adults, there are a lot of other prospective brides around. Why has he married a 12 year old? The poor girl.

His actions have been mostly condemned in other quarters, with some saying that he has broken the Marriage Law, and is liable to criminal prosecution. lampungpost detik

One supporting voice is that of politician Hilman Rosyad Syihab from the Islamist Partai Keadilan Sejahtera (PKS), who says that marrying young girls is allowed within Islam provided the marriages are not consummated until the girl has begun menstruating. dutamasyarakat

On November 24th 2010 Syech Puji was sentenced to 4 years jail, and a 60 million rupiah fine, for marrying an underage girl. Both his wives, Lutviana Ulfa and first wife Ummi Hani, wept at the news. antara

This guy sickens me SO MUCH!

  2. avatar jaka says:

@Carla: ditto. Bikin malu islam aja.

Looks like Indonesia has a lot stock of idiots with power. It never ends from the colonial era up until now, and ’til the break of this unbelievable republic.

And PKS, now that is an opinion from the party which called itself “center”.

  3. avatar Heny says:

    What an idiot!!!

  4. avatar Sylvester says:

PKS supports both Pornograpy Bill and pedophile. Very ironic!
I wonder what the mainstream Moslems think regarding this shameful act.
So many hypocrite Islamic radicals in Indonesia. Feed on people poverty and foolishness.

  5. avatar Purba Negoro says:

Disgusting. Utterly repulsive and completely vile in every facet.

If this is true- he should face the appropriate criminal charges and most severe penalty. Maybe ship him off to Aceh for caning.
Or just unleash the itchy BriMob on this sorry Islamicist turd with some bamboo bayonet dipped in pigs faeces.

The daughter’s parents should face trial for being such stupid moronic peasant.

And then so should the ulama who performed this repulsive ceremony.

It will be very telling and interesting indeed what further developments are- we shall see how deep the fetid green infection is and whether cauterisation byy fire is necessary.

Chase the money trail and it will end in the West’s darling bed-partners- Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Kuwait- with a stench of Blair and Brown upon it.

Bules- see what happen when you tinker with Indonesia?
This is what happens when the military is removed from power.

Or perhaps this was the West’s motive all along- hamstring Indonesia through funding of internal Islamicist?

Again your offensive and delusional smug moral superiority you parade as knowledge shown again to be less than feacal matter the trite moral angst and hand wringing about Human Rights and “democracy” once again shown to be as utterly bankrupt as your financial system and your pop cultures.

The Rakyat do not respect a kind leader- they only respect a strong leader unafraid to punish remorselessly.
Not some preening, silver-tongue as per Western darlings Gus Dur and SBY.
Siregar, Prabowo, Subiantoro, Tarwoco, Megawati, Sutrisno, Prajuritno, Susoro, Moeljoredjo, Hartoyo, Sudibyo, Sutowo, Suriadiredja, Muntaram, Baroto, Sardadi, Chalik, Pramono Harry Triono, Achmad Noerdin, Sampono and Sarmyana all excellent leader for this lunatic nation.

They need to be lead by the ear and belted into their correct station. They are wayward children in desperate need of tough love for their own good.

Under Suharto- this man would be prison bitch immediately. No argument, no appeals no Western BS about “rights”. Sent to jail immediately were he should be rat food.

  6. […] I have read on numerous news sites about the cleric in Semarang who married a 12 year old girl. Indonesia Matters has also reported it, along with the link references HERE. […]

  7. avatar rima says:

PN, for once, I kinda agree with you on this. This kind of things would never happen under Soeharto, neither would a lot of other stupid things that has happened the past decade.

  8. avatar Berlian Biru says:

“This kind of things would never happen under Soeharto”

    Oh really?

My wife’s aunt married her husband in 1970, he was 30 and the village school teacher in a kampung outside Bogor, she was his favourite pupil.

    She was 14.

  9. avatar Aluang Anak Bayang says:

    @ Berlian Biru

70s and beyond were kampungan years. It is norm for a peasant girl to be married off from age 14 to groom approved by their parents. As per Javanese tradition, the groom should not be older than the bribe’s parents.

However, it is clear that this islamic pig is a child sex predator. He is 31 years different and could well be the same age as the poor child’s grandpa.

He also apparently intends to marry two other girls, aged 9 and 7. Of these latter two, Syech Puji says that neither have begun menstruating, so he will refrain from interfering with them, while Ulfa has already entered puberty.

My daughter is aged 6 and she like to jump into shopping trolley as I pushed it along the supermarket aisle. If you ever see a elderly bearded Arab men pushing trolley with a kid inside, chances are that little girl is his wife. This is Arab tradition and real islam which has no place in Indonesia.

  10. avatar rima says:

    @Berlian Biru:

As AAB said, in the past, those kinds of practices were a bit on the normal side in kampungs. But this is 2008, and this kind of practice should be abolished.
Also, during Soeharto, this happened but never once did a member of the DPR (at least I dont think so) publicly say it’s ok to do so.

For more info about this, click here.

This is just simply disgusting. What next, permission of sibling marriage? I know marriage between cousins is already permitted, so I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

  11. avatar jawa asli says:

Why hasnt this dirty old man got arrested yet? isnt it against the law?
Maybe we should find a dukun to do santet on him, turn his pecker into rotten string bean.

  12. avatar Patrick says:

@ PN – I also 100% agree with you on this matter! Now, when will you announce your intention to run for president?

  13. avatar sociologist says:

This is not about religion or Arab culture (even if this fellow uses both as justifications). It’s just pedophilia, pure and simple.

  14. avatar Saipul says:

I agree, put a Suharto-clone in power. Remember back when he killed all those Islamist protesters (they’re still whining about it)? That was a delicious little slaughter. He also killed the Islamic terrorist Battalion 426 back in 1951. Same thing should have happened to the FPI at Monas. Similarly, overly religious parties should be banned as they were under Suharto.

  15. avatar Andrew says:

What the guy does is definitely repulsive, but what’s more disturbing is if the law enforcement doesn’t do anything to him. Lots of noises about his violating this and that law, but we have yet to see a real action.

If the parents of the poor child gave permission for the marriage, they should too be held responsible for that; at 13 the girl is legally still under their custody.

Funny how people think hiding behind religion can shield them from everything. It is even more ridiculous to see how people confuse religion with the law.

I don’t care if the girl likes it, or if the parents allow it to happen. I hope justice is served.

  16. avatar Lairedion says:

PN raised some valid points over here. Indonesia needs a strong Indonesian leader and a strong state apparatus monitoring religious extremists and exterminate them.

Westernization, overemphasis on democracy, freedom and human rights gives room for maniacs to roam freely and spread their disgusting thoughts and acts.

Also a shameful reaction from the PKS representative. This confirms my suspicion this wannabe Arab party is not to be trusted.

  17. avatar David says:

This story is really all over the news now, …..it seems he had a selection committee (Tim Sukses) to find more wives, there were 21 candidates and they narrowed it down to three, (he said there was a “fit and proper test”) Ulfa, who he married on 8th August, and the nine year old and seven year old, negotiations (presumably with the parents) are ongoing with those two.

At his marriage on 8th August there were hundreds of people present, head of the village, two clerics who presided, lots of people from his company. He says he’s not insane because he’s built up a successful, big company, and that his first wife encouraged him to find more wives because she didn’t want to take care of the business (?). detik

  18. avatar jawa asli says:

It sounds like child sex-trade hidden behind religion. happen everyday in poor places. Check this one out, a 74 yo evangelist had a 9 yo bride. It’s a sick sick world.

    Evangelist Alamo had 9-year-old bride

Come now AAB, if this was a bule you wouldn’t be hiding behind some ‘traditional’ practice would you. Fairs fair ok mate? On the second point aren’t you also islamic?

    Hmm..

Sheikh Puji is a very wealthy man, being the owner of PT Sinar Lendoh Terang (Silenter), and appeared in the news in August for distributing 1.3 billion rupiah in zakat or charity to the poor. His first wife is 26 years old.

A princely sum to pay for his deeds..

And someone is calling out to this guy as an Islamic PiG..ha.ha..ha..

Disgusting. Utterly repulsive and completely vile in every facet.

I wonder if this guy is a Chinese, what will happened>

And then so should the ulama who performed this repulsive ceremony

Don’t you think if that is someone else?

Or perhaps this was the West’s motive all along- hamstring Indonesia through funding of internal Islamicist

Always the blaming, whinning and sighing when a lightning stikes.

Under Suharto- this man would be prison bitch immediately. No argument, no appeals no Western BS about “rights”. Sent to jail immediately were he should be rat food

It should be in any government, not just Soeharto. The Law is the Law but comparing to Sharia Law, nothing.. Sharia Law is great.. they allow these things to happened.
I am thinking if that girl is your 12 year old daughter, what will happened to him.
    CALL IN THE ARMY……………

  21. avatar Andy says:

It is disgusting and appalling but what part of the world are we talking about. And why are we all shocked then. This is typical Indonesian Islamic practice as the story says above. I’ve seen it many times and it is with the consent of the parents 100% of the time. Replace that pious Indonesian with a bule and the mob would hang him by his nuts. Another example of bias and racism by the locals. In a bule country the law is the law and all are treated accordingly regardless of race colour and creed. But that is in the west where racial tolerance and the rule of law wins the day.

  23. avatar timdog says:

nasty, very nasty indeed, and as others have already stated, it looks like straight-forward paedophilia, excused on the grounds of wealth and influence and given a quick splash of religious “legitimacy”.
    Nasty; very nasty.

And as for Hilman Rosyad Syihab’s defending the case, this, Mr Patung, is precisely why I said elsewhere that I am inherently mistrusting of the idea of religious parties (of any kind) coming to power, not matter how rehabilitated, window-dressed and santitised…

    Andy:

    I’ve seen it many times

How many times? Where? When? Oh… let me guess, it was all the kids who walked out of your santa claus class, right? Their elderly husbands were waiting for them out in the school carpark I guess…

  24. avatar rayner says:

In Holland in 1990 the age of sexual consent was lowered to 12. This was because so many young girls and boys of that age were being prosecuted for breaking the law and the elders were fed up with their taxes being used to prosecute for an offense that was co-sensual. (Both had agreed to have sexual contact.)

So, they passed a law lowering the age of sexual consent to 12 with a proviso that any child who complained of being bribed, seduced or coerced could bring a charge of statutory rape though their parents. This also included anyone who was in a position of authority over the child, in that case it was an automatic prosecution by the State.

Before 1990 the age of sexual consent was 14. All the evidence for when sexual interest is starting to the point where the child seeks out some form of sexual contact is the age of 12. Boys starts at 14.
Thought you might find this of interest.
    Rayner

  25. avatar Carla says:

I talked to the chairman of Komnas Anak (national commission for children) and he said that this guy could be charged for 3 reasons: A. violating the marriage law (youngest girls are to marry at the age of 16, boys 19), B. violating the manpower regulation, employing underage children (by making her the general manager of his company), C. violating the child custody regulation (not sure if I’m using the right term) because 12 year-old child does not have his/her own consent to take a decision to get married. So it was clearly a “business trade”. The question is who is to bring him to court with these charges?

The provincial government of Central Java had a discussion about this recently. And they sort of refused to handle this matter and “suggest” the NGO’s to do that instead.

The NGO’s have difficulties in meeting the “unique” guy, so the case gets nowhere.

    So far.

  26. avatar Andy says:

How many times? Where? When? Oh… let me guess, it was all the kids who walked out of your santa claus class, right? Their elderly husbands were waiting for them out in the school carpark I guess…

No not at all. Generally from poorer kampung communities. One was my maid who married at age 14. I mentioned this previously in another post. I used to mingle with the kampung nearby also as a way of meeting ‘real Indonesians’ not the middle class phonies you see in malls. Many were married to older men as a way of getting out of abject poverty. It is very wrong but in a society like that who could blame them or their parents. It is the guy who marries her who is at fault.

  27. avatar David says:

Thanks for that Carla (you still work for that bule journalist evidently ;) ), yes he’s made her Direktur of PT Silenter, married her when she was 11 years 10 months, says she’s very smart, first in her class at primary school, good at English, knowledgeable in religion, and he’s ready to take on anyone who opposes it. l6

  28. avatar lgun says:

    What about Michael Jackson,
its not about Islam or anything, is just about money. if you have lots of money you’ll get power beyond mere people.
Poor pedo bule goes to poorer countries to satisfied their urge because its safer to them, the uber rich pedo bules do it in their own country cause they can.
beside, If this Sheikh is of no importance person this story will just gone unnotice, there are lots of underage marriage happens. And in this age, there are lots of underage sexual contact happen without anyone knows. Free Sex already a common knowledge thanks to “great western civilization”.

  29. avatar Ally says:

Sickening!!! A 12 year old girl? OMG…I wanna puke! Sick pedofile, so wrong…so wrong.

  30. avatar Patrick says:

@ Igun – How do you justify dragging the problems of the “West” into, at least in my mind, is a purely Indonesian made dilemna? This is not Michael Jackson or some other lesser known pervert from a country like say the Netherlands (as an example) sneaking around to prey on children. Those guys know its wrong, and against the law and do their disgusting actions in a stealthy way to avoid detection.

However, this Sheikh Puji character is marrying these very young girls quite openly and in front of your whole nation and with the approval of at least some adults who are religious leaders in the community. He is even using the example of your prophet Mohamed and text from the Koran as justification for his actions. We should also consider that apparently, at least some Indonesian laws have been violated but who will enforce them? If not, why not? These are the questions that really need to be answered.
