Yunus Yosfiah

An Australian court issues an arrest warrant for parliament member Yunus Yosfiah.

Yunus Yosfiah, currently a member of the MPR mpr in Jakarta, was summoned to appear at an Australian coronial (death) inquest into the killing 31 years ago of five western journalists at Balibo, East Timor during the Indonesian invasion. As he failed to appear after four letters were written to him a New South Wales arrest warrant was issued for Yosfiah. reuters

At the time of the invasion of East Timor Yunus Yosfiah served as commander of an elite squad called “Tim Susi”. A witness to the shootings of journalist Brian Peters and four of his colleagues in October 1975 claims that Yunus Yosfiah shot and killed the first of the men, and ordered another soldier to shoot the fifth victim.

Later in his career Yunus Yosfiah served as commander of the Sriwijaya Army Command from 1994 to 1995 (as did president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, 1996-97) kodam and later again as information minister in the government of B.J. Habibie. Currently he is a member of the MPR for the United Development Party (PPP).

The arrest warrant issued has no force outside of Australia and does not imply that Yunus has committed any crime. The man himself says he is unconcerned about it, and that he had already explained to an Indonesian parliamentary commission in 2001 that he had never even met the five killed men. detik Indonesian authorities have always maintained that the journalists were killed accidentally in crossfire, however a number of witnesses claim the five were captured and then killed “execution” style.

It’s obvious Indonesian special forces have nothing to envy to second world war SS. I remeber french friends stories working in Timtim as ONG volonteers during the independance process. They had a strong feeling dealing with SS when they met army officers. I also remember the stories of a missionnary frieI metnd in Irian Jaya. Babies heads crushed on rocks in front of their mothers eyes and so on… Anda the stories of young soldiers in Bandung, taking too much they should do… It also reminds me of a friend journalist. Arrested and tortured in a well know jail near Bandung.

Well that’s the reality of the country.

During ORBA politicians and “big people” didin’t get killed easily. The gov. tried bribing them first if they were too “vokal”. That’s why some deputies “had the balls” to critic the gov. They knew it’s not in the Indonesian mentality to kill opposants. Their offer money first. A la Javanaise. Just take the money and shut up. easy money.

Munir “should” have done that too.

But with ordinary people there is no such deals. Special forces are always happy to do the bad job. Well these guys are just ordinary Indonesian young men. They like blood.

  2. Dimp says:

If he is guilty then he should be responsible for his action, if he is innocent then he has nothing to hide and need to come clean. Regardless this will show the integrity of the Indonesian public profile. I hope that he will not do something to embarass Indonesians.

  3. Andrew says:

That may be a false accusation… but I wouldn’t be surprised if it turns out to be true.

  4. Niamh Piperman says:

The man himself says he is unconcerned about it, and that he had already explained to an Indonesian parliamentary commission in 2001 that he had never even met the five killed men.

Well that’s settled then; If he said he didn’t do it, then he didn’t do it.

  5. Ihaknt says:

NP, if only things were that simple. FYI people lie all the time. He maybe guilty he may be not, we’ll hear from Patung once the verdict is out.

  6. Niamh Piperman says:

Ihankt, I too can be sarcastic at times. 🙂

  7. Grace and Mercy says:

Well we know for sure where he won’t be spending his holidays. 😀

  8. Ihaknt says:

NP, I love sarcastic people! 😀
He hasn’t aged much in 31 years. I wonder what his beauty tips are.

  9. 1ndra says:

The last man who have the same moustache have been executed, I wonder its a curse for Muslim to have moustache than beard.

I hope you’re not being sarcastic when you say that. 😀

  11. Naga says:

He is just another part of the untouchable Indonesian genocide machine, a patriot, a warrior, a hero, a murderer.

  12. Dimp says:

    Hi Ihaknt,

He hasn’t aged much in 31 years. I wonder what his beauty tips are.

The blood of the innocent, but this has to be consumed during the full moon.

  13. Colson says:

Just to keep in mind: the person suspected should be presumed innocent untill conviction.

  14. Mohammed Khafi says:

If innocent, then he should just go to Australian and stand up in court and profess it, why has he failed to answer four letters from the Australian court? To me, he is shaming this country just by his refusal to stand up in a court of law and tell them what he knows about the incident and any involvement he may or may not have had. So much for the integrity of our chosen representatives!

  15. Rambutan says:

The Foreign Ministry said that they will not react to the arrest warrant in any way as they consider the case closed. Go figure.

  16. Dimp says:

    Hi MK,

If innocent, then he should just go to Australian and stand up in court and profess it, why has he failed to answer four letters from the Australian court? To me, he is shaming this country just by his refusal to stand up in a court of law and tell them what he knows about the incident and any involvement he may or may not have had. So much for the integrity of our chosen representatives!

I guess we can’t expect too much from our representatives, so much for democracy in Indonesia, we can only choose the lesser of the two evils, actually make that two thousand evils.

  17. Cukurungan says:

My General Yusuf, I am 1000% behind your decision, don’t even open any letters from Australian Court, the envelope might contain drugs from theirs drug dealers. Australian courts don’t have any moral credibility to judge Indonesia people, better they look upon their self, they committed so many crimes against humanity especially towards aborigine people and they provoked foolish East Timorese people to separate from indo after that cheated them in the split of oil in timor gap.

  18. Ali says:

they provoked foolish East Timorese people to separate from indo after that cheated them in the split of oil in timor gap.

Which is exactly what Indonesians did when they snatched East Timor in mid-1970s, the difference is that the Indonesians did it militarily. 😀

  19. Dimp says:

And with so many deaths amongst the innocence people of East Timor and Australian. Yet they think they were doing the right thing and think they will never have to answer to anyone.

  20. Cukurungan says:

    Patung,

Sorry my mistake , it should be Yunus not Yusuf.

    Ali,

One’s other different, Australia enjoy so many profit with this oil split (alias untung) whereas Indonesia was only getting losses (alias buntung) because snatched this very poor province.

  21. Dimp says:

    Hi Cuk,

Then Indonesian should be very happy to get rid of East Timor then. I wonder why they invade them in the first place in ’75.

  22. Naga says:

“don’t even open any letters from Australian Court, the envelope might contain drugs from theirs drug dealers.”

    YOU ARE AN IDIOT..

“Australian courts don’t have any moral credibility to judge Indonesia people,”

YES, THEY DO, ALL COURTS ARE INDEPENDENT, UNLIKE INDONESIA.

This stems from an independent inquiry, not from the government, you idiot.

“better they look upon their self, they committed so many crimes against humanity especially towards aborigine people ”

You mean the British colonisers? Don’t lecture on history when you know zero. Again, you are an idiot..

“and they provoked foolish East Timorese people to separate from indo after that cheated them in the split of oil in timor gap.”

THEY PROVOKED NOTHING, HABIBIE INITIATED THE SPLIT FROM ET, BUT THE INDO GOVT REFUSES TO ACCEPT BLAME IN THE AGE OLD JAVANESE FASHION, OF ‘ITS NOT MY FAULT, MEEESTER’….

The oil and gas deal between the govt’s was a legitimate commercial deal and the terms have been corrected by the ET govt, the Austrtalian govt receives no money from the commercial deal, unlike similar deals involving the Indonesian govt, the Aus govt will only receive tax revenue, which goes to the Tax dept, not the pockets of politicians, unlike in Indonesia, YOU IDIOT…

  23. Ihaknt says:

Naga don’t be so surprised if it comes from Cuk. Asbun. Sok pinter.

Although Naga, the Australian people don’t actually agree either with the deal. I remember the hooha a few years ago. The protest etc. The citizens believed that the profit should all go to the ETs 100%, I think they still do. But then I stopped following the news 😀 it got boring and too depressing.

  24. Cukurungan says:

    Naga.

He he he only this what you learn from a civilized world’s ….btw…thanks for your ” You are an idiot”.

You tell me where they came from, the drug dealers jailed in Bali.

Before they stem indipendent inquiry for Yunus, show me letter of invitation from Aborigine people that “Australia is only for white people. If can not it is better to look upon themselves. Here list to set independent inquiry:
    1) Death of poor Indonesian fishermen in their jails.
    2) Death of asylum seekers from Afhganistan and not white immigrants.
    3) Crimes against Aborigines. Open your eyes, what kind of condition aborigine people until today.
    4) Issues arrest warrant for Howard to be prosecuted as “Criminal War” for authorizing killing iraqi people.

If Australia is so honest about the Timor deal, let them pay first US 500 million wage stolen from aborigine labor.

    Myths Buster

  25. Naga says:

You could enhance all your arguments by learning english first…

“You tell me where they came from, the drug dealers jailed in Bali”

Apart from the ‘Bali 9’ and Schappelle, they came from Indonesian drug dealers who work in conjunction with the Bali police, the police also protect South American drug dealers in Bali, but you wouldn’t know that……

“Before they stem indipendent inquiry for Yunus, show me letter of invitation from Aborigine people that “Australia is only for white people. If can not it is better to look upon themselves.”

That doesn’t make sense (refer to first paragraph), and nobody had ever said Australia is only for white people, don’t let silly things like facts get in your way.

“1) Death of poor Indonesian fishermen in their jails.”

They shouldn’t be fishing outside their territory in the first place and they are treated far more humanely than people in the reverse situation.

“2) Death of asylum seekers from Afhganistan and not white immigrants.”

There is no such thing as ‘asylum seekers’, they are illegal immigrants jumping the line, and they are treated far more humanely than their counterparts in the Indonesian system. They are given access to medical care, better food, accomodation and free access to legal services; all of which costs the Australian taxpayer a lot of money, you can’t comphrend this, because it doesn’t exist in your country.

“3) Crimes against Aborigines. Open your eyes, what kind of condition aborigine people until today.”

You expose your complete ignorance, Aboriginals are responsible for their own destiny. They are given access to more resources and public funding than any other ethnic group in Australia. The ‘Aboriginal industry’ in Australia is rorted by their own people who steal their money and spend it on their own relatives, drugs and alcohol.

Again, don’t let facts get in the way of your silly argument. Please enlighten the world on what you know about the plight of Aborigines in Australia, i need a good laugh. For your information, all Aboriginals are immigrants, they are nomads, they came to Australia via Indonesia (hence they are Melanesian). They have no more legal claim to rights over Australian territory than anybody else, but they are nomads, scavengers, who destroy things, such as their surrounding environments and then move on.

At least the white settlers undertsood farming and engineering, they built things and developed the country, but you wouldn’t know that, you’ve never read Australia’s history.

“4) Issues arrest warrant for Howard to be prosecuted as “Criminal War” for authorizing killing iraqi people.”

Therefore should we issue arrest warrants for Suharto for the genocide he oversaw in Aceh, Papua & Timor?

Should we also issue arrrest warrants for Moerdani, Wiranto, Prabowo, Muchdi, Hendro, Damiri and all the other war criminals that you parade as national heroes? People who made their career by murdering your own countrymen?

You wouldn’t have the guts to stand up to them, you would still kiss their hand if you met them, it’s much easier to kick John Howard from a distance.

So, if we’re going to have independent enquiries, how about we set up these:

    1/ Indonesian annexation of WPapua

2/ Indonesian annexation of E Timor

    3/ Indonesian genocide in Aceh

4/ The ’98 riots and prosecute those responsible

5/ The systematic rapes of Chinese women in ’98

6/Inquiry inot the murder of Munir

    …and that’s just for starters…

“If Australia is so honest about the Timor deal, let them pay first US 500 million wage stolen from aborigine labor”

What stolen wages? Aborigines don’t work and never have, they are paid by the govt to sit down and do nothing. Again, you expose your ignorance, you have no idea what you are talking about.

And no, i will not be charging you for your education…your welcome.

  26. Hassan says:

    (Naga)

    > They shouldn’t be fishing outside their territory in the first place and they are treated far more humanely than people in the reverse situation.

Some of them fisherman are dead, how can they die if they are treated humanely? Treated worst in reverse situation? What is worst than death?

    > There is no such thing as ‘asylum seekers’, they are illegal immigrants jumping the line, and they are treated far more humanely than their counterparts in the Indonesian system. They are given access to medical care, better food, accomodation and free access to legal services; all of which costs the Australian taxpayer a lot of money, you can’t comphrend this, because it doesn’t exist in your country.

Oh, I see. Because they are illegal immigarnts they deserve to die, or left to die in oceans until some Norway ships rescue them? I get it.

    > For your information, all Aboriginals are immigrants, they are nomads

If they stay in Australia then they are nomads no more. Nomads are people who move often and continue to do so. Aborigins stay and do not move around often, so they are immigrants.

You know what? White Australians are convicts immigrants, their ancestors are criminals. The Britains moved them to Australia using jail ships. That is worst than Aborigins.

    > Should we also issue arrrest warrants for Moerdani, Wiranto, Prabowo, Muchdi, Hendro, Damiri and all the other war criminals that you parade as national heroes?

They are not our national heroes, they are retired generals, smart man.

    > And no, i will not be charging you for your education”¦your welcome.

Selling kangaroos are quite profitable enough, yes? Oh yes, and the Timor gap is lucrative too, so you don’t need money anyway.

  27. Naga says:

“Some of them fisherman are dead, how can they die if they are treated humanely? Treated worst in reverse situation? What is worst than death?”

Are you accusing somebody of murder? Do you have evidence?

They died because they were in poor health anyway…

“Oh, I see. Because they are illegal immigrants they deserve to die, or left to die in oceans until some Norway ships rescue them? I get it”

No you don’t get it, re-read the paragraph, nobody said they deserve anything, there is a clear and fair system of immigration that was being manipulated by Indonesian and Arab criminals, hence the govt took stern action, you wouldn’t understand this concept because nobody wants to live in a 3rd world country like Indonesia..

“If they stay in Australia then they are nomads no more. Nomads are people who move often and continue to do so.”

That’s correct, well done, that’s what they do, what is your point? Nomads move from point to point INSIDE a country as well, are you aware of this?

    You contradict yourself..

“Aborigins stay and do not move around often, so they are immigrants”

No they don’t, again, you contradict yourself…

“White Australians are convicts immigrants, their ancestors are criminals. The Britains moved them to Australia using jail ships. That is worst than Aborigins.”

No they aren’t, only a handful of ‘white Australians’ can directly link themselves to ‘criminals’, most of whom were poor & Irish, and jailed for stealing things like bread. They were being discrimnated against for being Catholic, since their country was colonised by the British, who were majority Protestants, but again, you wouldn’t know that, you don’t know your history, just like your girlfriend Cukurungan…

“They are not our national heroes, they are retired generals, smart man.”

All retired generals are lauded by the government as national heroes, the TNI is still indoctrinated as the vanguard of the nation and nobody said they weren’t retired generals, dumb man.

“Selling kangaroos are quite profitable enough, yes?”

A ridiculous comment like that exposes you as the child that you are, you have no reason to comment here, you should be quiet, listen and learn..

  28. Hassan says:

    (naga)

    > They died because they were in poor health anyway”¦

A smart (but ignorant) man’s excuse. You sure you have checked that and have credible data?

    > nobody said they deserve anything, there is a clear and fair system of immigration that was being manipulated by Indonesian and Arab criminals.

All immigrants using boats are criminals?

    > No they aren’t, only a handful of ‘white Australians’ can directly link themselves to ‘criminals’, most of whom were poor & Irish, and jailed for stealing things like bread.

Afghanistans immigrants are also poor, but when they try to go to Asu.tralia on boats, your proud government force them to stay on their boats for days without food and water until they almost die. Fortunately, some Norway ship rescue them.

    > you don’t know your history, just like your girlfriend Cukurungan”¦

But you know history, and know how to kiss John Howard’s behind. Yuck!

    > All retired generals are lauded by the government as national heroes

National heroes are Soedirman, Ahmad Yani, Nasution, etc. Their names are recorded as street names in Indonesia to respect them. Moerdani, Wiranto, Prabowo, Muchdi, Hendro, Damiri are not recognized by Indonesian people as national heroes, wise man! No street names for them.

    > you have no reason to comment here, you should be quiet, listen and learn..

You’re not moderator and I have free speech, arrogant kangaroo man. Why don’t you hop along now, jumpy guy.

  29. Cukurungan says:

    Naga,

oh my shame why my english so poor but who cares …you care thanks you for your appreciation

I would like to tell you that I have no any simpathy or respect with those Generals but when foreign country touched them I will not hesitate on defending them, I am Indonesia Sons whatever those General done are our internal affairs and those Australia journalist killed during Timor conflict were theirs faults no one was invited them to come there.

My points is Australia Court has no moral credibility to prosecute foreign people include Indonesia people because they’re not clean either.

Fabricated history is easy to be made by anyone include the aborigin history made in white people. If aborigin has no rights to claim Australia as theirs indigenous territory then who give the arrogant Australia government rights to select anyone come there. Australia island is a free God land and anyone has rights to come there and has rights the same as the brittons criminal descent.

You tell me when aborigin people were acknowledged by Government Australia as theirs own citizens. Before that times you tell me how Australian treating Aborigin labor to do their dirty work under slavery system.

  30. Ihaknt says:

Hassan about the fishermen, they keep coming back because apart from they are desperate to feed their family they like the fact that they are looked after in the prison in Aust. There was this documentary about Indo fishermen, some of the translation was a bit misleading, but me being an Indo understood completely what they were saying. They even said “makanan di penjara sini lebih enak daripada di rumah bu. Makanya saya yah kalo ketangkep yah ga papa, lha wong dikasi makan juga. Penjaranya juga sebentar doang.” NAH LHO! They even told their wives that they maybe caught but it’s ok because they will get fed! Most died because they drowned and yes poor health due to malnutrition. Unfortunately it happened in Aust water. They were caught because of the illegal fishing for crossing the borders. Some didnt realise they did it because it’s dark (d’oh! silly people) and don’t have the equipment to see in the dark. But they like being caught. Unfortunately these kinds of documentary are never shown in Indo. The medias only report the bad things or things that will sell but hardly show another sides that balance it. Hassan didn’t you say somewhere that we shouldn’t just believe anything that the medias offer? Then why not apply that to yourself?

Hassan and Cuk, please don’t go on about the Abos, you don’t even know how they are in Aust. Many have become the national heroes and models (and they are gorgeous!). And many also are only waiting for handouts. Many of them also sit and do the blame games for their misfortune. Mmmm a bit familiar huh? But they blame the Asians for taking their ‘jobs’. The jobs have always been there, they are just not trying to get them. Try walk pass an Abo here and you will hear them curse at you for taking ‘their jobs’. You need to broaden your horizons. Come here and see Australia but reserve your judgement. I will even take you around. That gives me an excuse for a holiday.

And for the so-called assylum seekers? I had to wait for 4 years for my visa and another 2 for my passport and 1 more year to actually receive the passport. There are processes involved. And it is not easy! In some ways they are the victims of bigger fish whom they paid money to get to Aust but were never informed that what they were doing was illegal and there wasnt any guarantee that they will be accepted in Aust. The Indo is in the middle of this in many FOBs (fresh of boats) cases. And of course due to money exchanged hands the Indo just did it. Bugger the law! They just want the money.
