Australian government approved Islam as a way to counter extremist teachings.
The university courses, which are meant to train future Australian imams, will take a look at Islam from an “international perspective”.
The Australian government is spending $6 million on the program and the courses will be available from next year.
Abdullah Seed, a Melbourne University professor who trained at the Islamic University of Medina in Saudi Arabia, will run the new “Centre of Islamic Studies” at three universities in New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland.
