I Love Islam

Dec 12th, 2006, in Opinion, by

What Islam is and why people love it.

In the discussion on Alfarini Eridani Agnes says, likely as a self-defensive reflex against the “cloud” which Islam may have been put under by the polygamy issue, always a difficult issue for Muslim women to deal with:

I LOVE ISLAM!!!!!

Loving a religion? A certain type of Christian might say “I love God” or “I love Jesus” but “I love Christianity” is a far less commonly heard thing. Google says:

Results 1 – 10 of about 775 for “I love Christianity”.

While for the other:

Results 1 – 10 of about 19,000 for “I love Islam”.

Note these results are in English, which is the language of Christianity for many but not of Islam, for most.

Understanding why the expression “I love Islam” exists can tell us much about the nature of Islam and may enable us to understand a lot of what is happening in our world today, from the rise of Islamic militancy and terrorism, to cartoon rage, to the increasing tendency of Muslims to mark themselves off from others by the way of their dress, among many other things.

First we need to know what is the thing that is loved. It is evidently not God, or else Agnes would have likely said so. What is loved, which means what Islam is, is a way of living, a lifestyle, an identity, a history, a tradition, a sense of belonging to a worldwide community, a community which is highly fractured and prone to bitter internal conflicts, yes, but one which nevertheless deeply yearns for the unity of the “ummah”.

Those who criticise Islam would do well to note this. Quoting evil sounding verses from the Quran is a largely useless effort, since it does not address what draws people to Islam, or keeps them attached to it, it does not deal directly with Islam’s strengths, which are many.

The problem we are faced with today, or that Muslims are faced with, is that their way of life, which is one way of saying their religion, and then, logically, even themselves, is under enormous pressure. Cultures and peoples do not survive for ever, weaker ones are annilihated by the stronger, and while this has happened since the beginning of history it is today that the process of destruction of traditional cultures goes on at a frenetic pace, due to new technologies and what people usually call globalization.

The future is in Los Angeles, and Shanghai, it is not in any Islamic “capital”. The traditional way of life, which is to say, again, the religion, of hundreds of millions of Muslims will unlikely survive the great upheaval of modern times, the sorting out of winners and losers, the grim battle for economic survival. Not long from now, if it isn’t happening already, children in the middle east will briefly turn away from the video game they are playing to cast a disdainful eye on the photos of their peculiarly dressed grandparents. Islamic terrorism, the Taliban, the tendency of Muslims to accentuate the differences between themselves and others, are all different kinds of reactions against this destruction, desperate protests, desperate attempts to survive.

Which brings us back to loving Islam. Love can be displayed in many different ways and it can be at its most intense when we fear that the object of our affection will leave us or be taken away, and the biggest, most powerful stars burn brightest when they are dying.

    Islam
I believe Islam will survive for a long time. Islam is the most common religion that actually many follows by each word in the Quran. And in the Quran, it says many things about love, and giving the message of Quran to people who are interested and who bring hate against Muslims. And terrorism has nothing to do with the Quran. In the Quran it says absolutely nothing about these evil deeds.

Both of you disturb about the fairy tales! The story of Adam and Eve on those two scriptures nothing but fairy tales! How can you live at the time of internet era still believe the story of Babel Tower as the basic of the language diversity?

  5. Khaled says:

Take out Time and Seek the truth about Islam.

It really intrigues me that one who knows so little of his or her own religions have so much to say. Take a look back at your own histories of religion, look at what was said by your Prophets or leaders. Don’t just run and jump to make harsh statements at Islam. Have you ever asked yourselves why Islam is such a feared Religion?? Well, let me tell you. Most of you will be probably swearing or screaming out this is a whole load of bull, but go and do research from the sources which caused you to HATE Islam when you know so little about it.

Islam is hated because those who make it look bad Right Fully know it is the TRUE Religion and out of pride and spite refuse to accept it. If you take a look at the west, where ever you go it always got something to do with hatred towards islam, this is so because they fear it and fear many will accept it. Well if you don’t know yet, Islam is the WORLDS FASTEST growing religion. Belive it or Not, The truth hurts.

Many are accepting Islam because Unlike many who just out of turn hear something over the media and are fast to pass a hateful comment on Islam. They rather take time to research it and find out what islam really is.

Look around the world, Hatred for Islam mainly comes from the WEST who fear They will loose their status of “SUPER POWERS”.

How many of you out there really know the true scriptures of your OWN religion?? Not many I suppose. Many are so shallow minded an uneducated about their own religions yet have such guts to pass remarks about Islam.

Well, for those who know the scriptures of your religion, Do you know what The Quran (Holy book in Islam) really is?? This time let me educate you. The Quran is the final book which consists of Scriptures from the Torat, Zabur and Ingil (Scriptures of The Holy Books of the Jews and Christians) and it has extra to it as well. BUT, The Quran is in its original form since it was revealed unlike the other 3 Books which have been changed to suite peoples desires today which go against religion of all the books i.e. The Torat, Zabur, Ingil and The Holy Quran.

It is not that the other books other than the Quran are not Gods words, They WERE Gods words until changed, but should you want the original books (Torat, Zabur and Ingil) AND MORE Look in The Quran. It contains ALL THE BOOKS IN 1 and Additional scriptures of what somes up ALL religions.

Just like how Muhammad is the FNAL Prophet so is the Quran the FINAL book, That is why Islam is Believed to be the true religion, because it’s in actual fact all the religions of the BOOKS (Torat, Zabur and Ingil) plus additional teachings to complete ALL RELIGIONS and to guide MANKIND on the straightest of paths to attain paradise and to get saved from the Hell
    Fire.

So the next time one hears something sbout Islam go out and find out the Truth.

Lets take a look at 9/11. How sure are you that it is islamists who did it?? Take a look at http://www.reopen911.org , a NON-Islamic sight by a NON-Islamic person. Go find out the truth, like how other Americans are finding out slowly.

So next time, don’t just hear something and believe it. Remember this saying, “Seeing is Believing and Hearing is Decieving”. A Brilliant saying.

And also remember this, Western media is always out to get Islam. This is a Fact. You’ll see it for yourself everytime you switch the radio or television on.

Another point one should research is Jihad. What is Jihad in Islam? Some people choose to quote verses from the quraan without the supporting verses and commentary on purpose just to make it sound wrong. Take out some of your time and go seek the reall true meaning and virtues of jihad. Just to inform you, Jihad is NOT ONLY FIGHTING for Islam. There’s a lot more to jihad than just FIGHTING as portrait by the WEST.

As much as one might Hate Islam, break your Pride and Go ask Learned Islamic Scholars whatever one should wish to know instead of passing remarks and swearing the religion without having knowledge of it.

To some up, Why do you NOT find Islamic Persons CRITISING other religions or HATE other religions like how other religions HATE and CRITISIZE ISLAM.

Hurray! One more Muslim. This brings the total number of believers to 1.327.681.574 *.
    * dead Muslims and apostates included

To some up, Why do you NOT find Islamic Persons CRITISING other religions or HATE other religions like how other religions HATE and CRITISIZE ISLAM.

O yes, WHY do they hate us so much, sob”¦sob”¦ 🙁 ? Is it just because our beloved Prophet Muhammad (alaihissalam) was bestowed with a few revelations like

Qur’an:9:5 “Fight and kill the disbelievers wherever you find them, take them captive, harass them, lie in wait and ambush them using every stratagem of war.”
Qur’an 5:51 “Believers, take not Jews and Christians for your friends. They are but friends and protectors to each other.”
Qur’an 88:1 “Has the narration reached you of the overwhelming (calamity)? Some faces (Jews and Christians) that Day, will be humiliated, downcast, scorched by the burning fire, while they are made to drink from a boiling hot spring.”
Qur’an 5:60 “Allah has turned some Christians and Jews into apes and swine”

Or is it only because last June there was a story in the Jakarta Post?

Dozens of unidentified people Sunday broke into Sidang Jemaat Allah church at Gading Tutuka complex in Soreang, Bandung forcing churchgoers, including 15 children, to stop their religious activities, which they have conducted weekly since 2000.
The attackers forced their way into the church at 9.30am on Sunday, hit the Reverend’s wife over the head with a bible and forced the children’s Sunday School lessons to stop.
Churchgoer Lidia said the attackers claimed they were from the Anti-apostate Movement Alliance (AGAP).
Shouting Allahu Akbar (God is Great), the attackers forced their way into the church and destroyed at least four glass pictures of Jesus Christ.

    Unbelievers, REPENT!

    Peace

  10. Barry Prima says:

Weakness comes from blind faith and following that of which you have no knowledge,

You have no knowledge of arabic so you just shut up about hadith and quran especially when you arm yourself from chrisitan missionary websites and choose to follow their line of argument over muslim scholars who actually do speak arabic and know about religion/theology/metaphysics..what do you know about.?????

I don’t see anybody fighting here

Calling our beloved sufis and scholars of over 1400 years ignorant and evil, whom in most cases know nothing about is not fighting with words and bringing jihad on your fellow brothers??? Truly a wolf in sheeps clothing you are Kafi!

Islam (submission to god) has survived 1400 years and will survive until the end of time, when there is noone to proclaim sahhadah the earth will not longer be maintained…as man will at that point have severed his connection with that which sustains him..the faith of that one last man will keep the world going..

The future is in Los Angeles, and Shanghai, it is not in any Islamic “capital”.

According to ibn arabi number 1 mystic and top class scholar (sorry to steal your eloquent words cuk), the last wali of allah on earth will be chinese and will speak in chinese…interesting..what future are you talking about…Moorish spain was the most advanced civilization for 700 years..in a hundred years time who knows, the future might be somewhere in the muslim world! As for LA..it is situated on one of the most earthquake susceptible spots on earth and could be destroyed overnight by a major earthquake…..which of his signs will you still deny(al quran)

Magy: very nice comments…I like what youv’e written, rare to get such honesty and sarcasm free words on im.

“Love for Islam” a desperate, last act, for many men that see their powers over women go away. It is fearful and frightening..

Very true…but not for all men or all muslims…for me love of islam is love for a way of life that is still connected to the source , secularism is my enemy as it conspires (conscioulsy or unconsciously) to take me away from the divine and thus myself…love of islam is thus love for ownself, love for that which is humane, beautiful real and true…just like the secularist, liberals will fight for their truth(they will have to ) so will the muslim…conflict is not nice but unavoidable…the world will lose its balance and doomsday will come….

  11. Mohammed Khafi says:

Once again Mr Barry Prima has revealed how self centred he really is:

secularism is my enemy as it conspires (conscioulsy or unconsciously) to take me away from the divine and thus myself…love of islam is thus love for ownself,

You are a very sad man Mr Barry Prima, Islam is about simple devotion to God, no more no less. You are obviously so blinded by you own infatuation with your divine self that you can no longer see that.

  12. Barry Prima says:

    Khafi:
yawn…..if you ever had an original thought come to your head,it would properbly explode…

  13. DumadiSatrio says:

“Weakness comes from blind faith and following that of which you have no knowledge,”

which explains Barry Prima; who submits to long bearded men in Medina who he calls “scholars”. It seems to me that many muslims these days have made islam more a cult of the arab, or a personality cult of Muhammed…who says:

“muslim scholars who actually do speak arabic and know about religion/theologymetaphysics”

using your logic:Do you speak ancient Greek? Then how can you know about Aristotle?
So you should just shut your mouth about metapysics!.

“conflict is not nice but unavoidable…the world will lose its balance and doomsday will come…”
You can almost see the big grin on his face, as he dreams of WW3.

If god’s message is written on each persons’ heart (and not in arabic, nor any other language the tongue for that matter), why should I submit to “prophets” “scholars” “sages” or anyone other than my own heart and intellect?

  14. schmerly says:

The problem with Islam is it’s stuck in the seventh century, and doesn’t seem to be able to move forward into the twenty-first century, Moslem’s want all the amenity’s that the modern world provides, but are not prepared to compromise in any way, it seems to me to be all take and no give, everything has to be done their way, well it’s time they woke up to reality and realised theirs is not the only religion in the world.

  15. Barry Prima says:

So you should just shut your mouth about metapysics!.

The greeks did not invent or end metaphysics, nor do i take them as my cue …so there…if you want to learn science ,you learn from a scientist, you dont read a book and become a scientist, you have to learn the maths, the calculations, the formulas.Untill then you are pretending to be a scientist, not a real one, some foolish people will even believe you,am i right or am i not kafi?

Who submits to long bearded men in Medina who he calls “scholars”. It seems to me that many muslims these days have made islam more a cult of the arab, or a personality cult of Muhammed

Those long bearded men in medina would properbly call me a heretic.Kafi has made Islam the cult of Khafi.Everyone else is ignorant, except the small band of non educated who agree with him.Islam `is’ in a way the cult of Muhammed,he is the one we take as our model on the way to self realisation. The acceptance of the second part of the sahadah is the way to achive realisation of the first part.

why should I submit to “prophets” “scholars” “sages” or anyone other than my own heart and intellect?

Lots of people hearts tell them to do bad things such as kill another human being, should they just follow their heart then? Revelation provides the tools to purify the heart, only then can we discern what is real and what is not.

You can almost see the big grin on his face, as he dreams of WW3.

It wasnt me who started the first world war or the second one, or the conflicts in Palestine, iraq etc etc.You can face reality for what it is ,or pretend to talk peace when it is never going to happen.

As the quran says `everything is perishing except the face of god’.
Even Khafi will have to agree weith me on that one…

If god’s message is written on each persons’ heart (and not in arabic, nor any other language the tongue for that matter)

Repeat the word god one thousand times and see what happens..properbly nothing, repeat Allah one thousand times in the way the mystics have shown us and see what happens…
Qurani Arabic is a sacred language, like armaic, sanskrit hebrew and many others…sacred languages contain formulas that have a vibrational quality that can purify the heart, wether they are intellectually comprehended by the speaker or not.

if you feel it is not important to learn from others and just follow your heart,i suppose you wont be sending your sons to school and ban them from reading books too?Ultimately we are alone in our parth to Allah, but there is much benefit in learning from those who wlaked the path before us.

  16. Barry Prima says:

The problem with Islam is it’s stuck in the seventh century, and doesn’t seem to be able to move forward into the twenty-first century

The problem with you observation is that it is historically inaccurate and worst of all a cliche..you only have to read the other post in this thread to see that .For example we might not even know what the ancient greeks believed if it wasnt for the moors!!!

  17. schmerly says:

BTW, I think this is where a lot of the Moslem xenophobia and envy comes from, their religion is holding them back, but of course they will never admit to that.

  18. sputjam says:

Does religion takes precedence over God or God over religion.
Is religion relevant in the beleif of God?
Didn’t jesus warned the jews about their religion(idol worshipping)?
Didn’t Mohamed warned the arabs about paganism (religious rituals) around the kaabah in mecca?
Was there anyone listening to them?
    Very few took heed.
Most are blind and stubborn. Won’t admit that they are being misled down the wrong path. blindly follow the paths taken by their ancestors or communities. Not using their God given brain.
Why si there a need for priest and imams when it is God who will guide the righteous. And He is all around us. The Knower. nothing we do and think escapes Him. The Knowledgable.
Do not fall into the “I love religion ” trap.
Religion is nothing and invented by man to control other fellow men.

  19. DumadiSatrio says:

“Lots of people hearts tell them to do bad things such as kill another human being”

-> Lots of religious leaders tell people to do bad things such as kill other human beings.

I think you will find very few people, with the exception of the completely insane, who will say: “My heart tells me that I must cut of this persons head” however, you will hear that from those who have been brainwashed into abandoning their natural empathy, turning away from what their true self knows is good, and blindly submitting to the instructions/indoctrinations/ect of other men who have done the same.

  20. DumadiSatrio says:

by the way, “I love Ice Cream” got 28,000,000 hits!

  21. Burung Koel says:

if you want to learn science ,you learn from a scientist, you dont read a book and become a scientist, you have to learn the maths, the calculations, the formulas.Untill then you are pretending to be a scientist

I’m not stalking you, Barry, but…

Being scientific is not an arcane occupation or a formal qualification. Anyone can be a scientist if they are applying the scientific method to what they do.

Science is the same in a Javanese kampung as it is at MIT. It is a practical tool and a way of thinking about the world. You can learn it building a wall, or ploughing a field, or in a laboratory.

  22. schmerly says:

    @BP..

The problem with you observation is that it is historically inaccurate

    OK prove me wrong.

  23. Barry Prima says:

    Schemerly:
Please read the other post in this thread by some of the other posters. i just gave you one example about how the moors rediscovered and maintained the greek intellectual heritage (much of which was idolatrous) that was almost destroyed by christianity.
Muslims of that era were not afraid of ideas and knowledge outside their own tradition and thats why they were world leaders at the time in many fields.

The problem is that even the so called muslim intellectuals these days have lost their self confidence and feel that other ideas will compromise their religion, but this shows only a lack of faith in god and his revelation which only becomes clearer the more you open yourself to others.

Being scientific is not an arcane occupation or a formal qualification. Anyone can be a scientist if they are applying the scientific method to what they do.

True, but that wasnt really my point it was `about applying the scientific method to what you’ do with regard to khaf.He cannot even read the language of the quran and then acts like he is some authority on the matter!
Furthermore he claims that hundreds of years of scholars who do speak arabic, studied it all their lives are wrong/evil/ignorant. That might be true, for arguments sake, but he is certianly not in a position to make that judgment is he?

I think you will find very few people, with the exception of the completely insane, who will say: “My heart tells me that I must cut of this persons head”

You will also find very few muslims who will be brainwashed into killing innocent people,so why is that always used as an argument to asses the merit of islam.?
Again my point was the danger of following your heart as a guide to establishing what is right or wrong.Your heart has to be clean first.
To use an example,my heart might tell me me i dont love my wife anymore and i love someone else..do i follow my heart,or do i folllow a sense of responsibility to my wife?
If my heart is purified i will not seriously entertain the possibility of leaving someone who is loyal to me and who i have made a pledge to support for the rest of my life for what my heart might be telling me at some point.YOu can say its nafsu, but nafsu and the heart are not independent, the nafsu also has a right over person and serves us well as long as it is also purified.

Lots of religious leaders tell people to do bad things such as kill other human beings.

Well just ignore them..there are lots who dont and lots who teach you compassion and empathy. You dont suddenly drop out of university because you had one bad lecturer do you?

  24. schmerly says:

BP.. Thanks for the history lesson, but I think just a couple of lines would have done, don’t you go on!

  25. Barry Prima says:

Sputjam, the Pakistani Ustads have really done you over. Having been to Pakistan twice and known many Pakistani Muslims, I somewhat understand why you have adopted such a position.
In your country, the `molvi’ classes are for the most part clueless, theologically and spiritually bankrupt and power hungry. I’m not surprised the common man despises them. However amongst the rubble, there are some gems, you will find them if you accept that you have a lot to learn.
Although erudition amongst Pakistani Ulemas is low, why do you have to let them keep defining the parameters for what Islam is??
Your position is what Malcolm(x) would have called reactionary not revolutionary, you say god has given you a brain and a heart, but you heart is still full of bitterness towards the `molvis’, and they continue to dominate your thinking; even whilst you think you are going against them. That’s why you are in a hal described in the quran:
“But they have no knowledge therein. They follow nothing but conjecture’

Why is there a need for priest and imams when it is God who will guide the righteous

What is righteousness? That’s why Allah has sent prophets and revelation as `Al furqan’. Besides aren’t pagans and Atheist using their god given brains, so brains cannot be themselves alone the source of al furqan!
The Imams and priest are just there as helpers along the way, some are helpful, some are not. It is the same with any path; some are more knowledgeable in the path than others. You will know the good from the bad from the beauty of their characters, but you must beautify your own niyah to see the beauty in others.

This is how S.h.Nasr explains religion/ritual and Islam :
The function of religion is to bestow order upon human life and to establish an “outward” harmony upon whose basis man can return inwardly to his Origin by means of the journey toward the “interior” direction.
God is at once the First (al-awwal) and the Last (al-akhir), the Outward (al-zahir) and the Inward (al-batin). By function of His outwardness He creates a world of separation and otherness and through His inwardness He brings men back to their Origin. Religion is the means whereby this journey is made possible, and it recapitulates in its structure the creation itself which issues from God and returns unto Him. Religion consists of a dimension which is outward and another which, upon the basis of this outwardness, leads to the inward. These dimensions of the islamic revelation are called the Shariah (the Sacred Law), the Tariqah (the Path) and the Haqiqah (the Truth), or from another point of view they correspond to islam, iman, and ihsan, or “surrender”, “faith” and “virtue”.
No man has the right to approach the Imminent without surrendering himself to the Transcendent, and it is only in possessing faith in the Transcendent that man is able to experience the Imminent. Or from another point of view, it is only in accepting the Shari’ah that man is able to travel upon the Path (tariqah) and finally to reach the Truth (haqiqah) which lies at the heart of all things and yet is beyond all determination and limitation.
To interiorize life itself and to become aware of the inward dimension, man must have recourse to rites whose very nature it is to cast a sacred form upon the waves of the ocean of multiplicity in order to save man and bring him back to the shores of Unity.
The major rites or pillars (arkan) of Islam, namely the daily prayers (salat), fasting (sawm), the pilgrimage (hajj), the religious tax (zakat) and holy war (jihad), are all means of sanctifying man’s terrestrial life and enabling him to live and to die as a central being destined for beatitude. But these rites themselves are not limited to their outer forms. Rather they possess inward dimensions and levels of meaning which man can reach in function of the degree of his faith (iman) and the intensity and quality of his virtue or inner beauty (ihsan).
The same truth holds true of the other rites.

Didn’t Mohamed warned the arabs about paganism (religious rituals) around the kaabah in mecca?

First of all He performed hajj himself and second please get your definition of paganism right . It says in the quran itself:
[Quran; 2:125] We have rendered the shrine (the Ka`aba) a focal point for the people, and a safe sanctuary. You may use Abraham’s shrine as a prayer house. We commissioned Abraham and Ismail: “You shall purify My house for those who visit, those who live there, and those who bow and prostrate.”

The pilgrimage or hajj is outwardly the journey towards the house of God in Mecca and inwardly circumambulation around the Ka’bah of the heart which is also the house of God. Moreover, the outward hajj is the means and support for that inner journey to the Center which is at once nowhere and everywhere and which is the goal of every wayfaring and journeying.
The rituals of the hajj are outward gestures that are interiorised into the psycho / spiritual framework of man. Putting on the ihram at the start symbolizes unity/equality and nakedness (spiritually) before god and should reflect the pilgrim’s intent (niyyah) to renounce the world for a more pious and humble life.
The 7 circumambulations around the kaabah represent the seven stations of the heart, (analogues to the seven metals of alchemy) which must be transcended before man can reach the gate of truth. Once the seven stages are completed, the pilgrim still has to run between al safah and al marwah, seven times, safa is related to the root word for meat, marwah refers to a precious stone on which animals are sacrificed. So this aspect symbolises the sacrificing of the animal self(hawa nafsu) to the higher self that is purely spirit, only then can the persons spiritual thirst be quenched(hence the next ritual is the drinking of zam zam)

I could go on and on, but I hope you get the picture..circumambulation is a process of centering of the soul that is practiced in most religions not just islam most markedly in Buddhism.

Hajj and other Islamic rituals are `latihan’ or spiritual exercises, just as physical exercises make the body stronger and healthier, spiritual exercises make the spirit/soul/jiwa stronger. If you cary out physical exercises without knowing the science about the body (by just following your god given brain of which 90% you can’t even access), you will harm yourself, that’s why you have fitness experts and martial arts gurus.

The purpose (of ritual) is to bring to a conscious level conflicts and resistances
Which have remained unconscious. The conflicts and resistances are resolved, not
because of the knowledge, real or alleged, but because this knowledge makes possible aa specific experience. The manipulation must be carried out through symbols, that is, through meaningful equivalents of things meant which belong to another order of reality.(Levis Strauss)

  26. schmerly says:

BP..With all your going on, you still haven’t answered my question, to reiterate:

The problem with Islam is it’s stuck in the seventh century, and doesn’t seem to be able to move forward into the twenty-first century, Moslem’s want all the amenity’s that the modern world provides, but are not prepared to compromise in any way, it seems to me to be all take and no give, everything has to be done their way, well it’s time they woke up to reality and realised theirs is not the only religion in the world.

Now try and keep it short and sweet, I don’t need the whole Encyclopaedia Britannica.

Is there any difference between repeating the word “Allah” 1000 times and “Hare Rama, Hare Khrsna, Khrsna Khrsna Hare Hare” 1000 times?
