Gym, the head of the Darud Tauhid Islamic boarding school, and an often seen presence on television screens, explains that polygamy is a legitimate practice within Islam, sanctioned by God himself, but it’s not for every Tom, Dick, and Harry:
Polygamy is clearly allowed by God, but it is not recommended. Polygamy can be done in certain ways as an emergency exit.

It is not clear what exactly is the situation from which Gym is seeking an emergency exit.
Gym admits that his decision has upset a lot of people, especially women. He says that the two injunctions which his legion of followers most often convey to him are, from men: don’t get involved in politics; and from women: don’t have more than one wife. He says he has already discussed political issues, like the RUU Pornografi debate, because pornography is something which damages the nation, he feels bound to discuss it.
For polygamy he says that many people in Indonesia regard it as an always negative thing. Most women are not able to accept the matter, it hurts them, he says, but there is a small group of women who can. Those who criticise polygamy, he says, should remember that it is God’s law. mediaindo

I am extremely shocked about this announcement. I’ve always looked up to you as the best Islamic cleric among the others, but right now you are just very disappointing and I don’t think I have the same respect as I always had for you before. Since you are well-known as the person who sets good example in Islamic way, I am certain that polygamy is definately NOT the way you give as one of the examples!
Although “It is not recommended”, I am concerned once you start doing this, it would motivate other people to do it and it will seem as if you ARE recommending. And, I am pretty sure that more and more people would use “as an emergency exit” just for another reason to cover their lust! Aren’t you concerned? If you are making too much money, why can’t you just find another eligible man to marry them and pay their expenses instead? This is certainly a bad image for Islam, as well as a bad effect to our society that’s not well-educated enough to hold their lust! Have respect to women, will you!

It is not just the Muslim leaders in Indonesia, it is the Muslim leaders in all of the Arab dominated Islamic world, and it is not just polygamy. Islam has been twisted from its true path over the centuries to suit, dictators, royal rulers, despots, patriachs and the Islamic clergy. Very few of the Sunnah and Hadith have any relationship to Al Quran and are just used to control the uneducated masses. The rich and powerful are now using the system for their own purposes and anybody who attempts to change the system are labeled kafir by the religious leaders or establishment and are either silenced by peer pressure or in extreme cases killed.
What we see in the world today is a sad sham of a once great religion, based on devotion to God, learning, knowledge, charity, caring and love.

Faiz, I saw your posting and I think we are on the same page.
I have never been a big fan of Aa Gym. Somewhat, I have my own reservation towards any “celebrity” preacher. You will remember that since the emergence of Aa Gym, there have been many more preacher or so called “spritual leaders” who have proclaimed themselves as “Aa”. Sigh–I am a Sundanese, and honestly, it is really not appropriate to address yourself as “Aa”. This way, your are positioning yourself higher than your audience. So…without being prejudice…just be cautious of anyone that call THEMSELVES Aa, Gus, Ustad and the likes–these titles are to be earned and not self-granting.
Now after things blew out of control, Aa said that it is a personal family matters and others may not judge it. This ridiculous. When a person is famous, definetely it is because the public adore him/her. In other word the public are their shareholders, thus have an expectation. But when the public express their expression the celebrity would say “please respect my privacy”.
Last but not least: The Rasul disapproved Ali to practice polygamy because he said something like :” My daughter is a part of me and I can feel what she feels”. He said 3 times that he objected poligamy by Ali.
May we still practice a good Manajemen Qalbu (meaning: high conscience)…like what Aa has been teaching us about…

What a STUPID comment when a parliament member (Nasruddin Narosi of Fraksi Kebangkitan Bangsa) said (detik.com 04 des 06) that what Yahya Zaini done is the same with what AA Gym done.
What Yahya Zaini done is ADULTERY, Unfair/dishonest relationship, amoral or something ILLEGAL. But what AA Gym done is something LEGAL BUT NOT POPULAR at present. Is he (Mr. Nasruddin Narosi) the man too much DUGEM, so he can’t distingush between POLIGAMY and ADULTERY?
I think will be more perfect and relevant when he (AA Gym) speaks poligamy when him become his perpetrator.

I agree with that there is a big difference between the two cases. Apart for reasons that you have mentioned above, Yahya does not preach about the value of your heart and conscience to millions people like Aa does (and that has differed him a lot with old-time preachers like Zainuddine MZ).
But also there is a BIG similarity between them: hurting to their beloved families (and in Aa’s case, his family consists of millions of people)..
Back to the original: what made him choose to hurt so many millions for fulfilling his own personal need/want/desire or whatever it is…
He has no credibility now to inflluence people’s life the way he did…sad…

Indonesian (like other people across the world too) love celeb, they crazy about popularity. so they choose people like Zainudin MZ, Rhoma Irama, Aa Gym, Ustad Jefri, Ilham Arifin, etc…as entertainment. then, everytime this celeb acting funny, the admirer get furious.
I think it is time for the admirer to do serious thinking: do you have another better thing to do than to discuss about your celeb attitude.
Watch the TV as entertainment please, don’t take it seriously.
Will you consider the religious celeb is different from entertainment like Inul, Trio Macan, Buser, Sigi, etc??? one is entertainment with good religion info, the other is entertainment with good ash spinning around.

Many Indonesians over here do not write good English, but I don’t make fun of them, because I appreciate their courage to write in a foreign language.
Why is it then that so many Indonesians make fun of me whenever I make a mistake in the Indonesian language ? (Like :” Go away, bule, you are too stupid because you can’t even write Indonesian”)
