A mosque in a mainly Christian village in Ambon has recently been rebuilt.
Nurul Hidayah mosque, in the middle of a Christian kampung in Latta village, was burnt down and later used as a military post during sectarian fighting in the province several years ago. It has recently been repaired, along with several other buildings, with 200 million rupiah of funds allocated by the central government.
During the war in Maluku the Muslim residents of Latta fled their homes but in recent times seventy six Muslim families have moved back to their homes. After lying in a state of disrepair for some time the mosque has now been in operation for ten weeks.
The Jakarta Post says that the improving relations between Christians and Muslims in the village has been on display particularly during the fasting month of Ramadhan. Christians and Muslims greet each other when they pass in the street and some Christians have taken to sending food to the mosque for people breaking the fast.
La Zaman, 44 years old said Christians in the village had gone out of their way to make returning Muslim residents feel welcome.
Thank God, since our return we have had more mutual respect. They [Christians] respect those of us who are fasting by not openly eating or drinking.
When the conflict broke out, many Muslim residents of Latta became refugees at a naval base in Ambon. They returned home in December 2003, but a new outbreak of violence in 2004 saw them return to the naval complex, where they remained until October 2005. Says Zaman:
This hamlet is our home and we had to return. We thought about relocating but were worried there would be a land dispute in the new place, while here the land is rightfully ours.
Nurul Hidayah Mosque has been busy with activity during Ramadhan with children gathering to recite the Quran each day, and groups of women hold gatherings at the mosque twice a week. On Sundays, members of the mosque roll up their sleeves and clean the place together.
A mosque attendant, Tasdun, said a loudspeaker was used by the muezzin for the call to prayer, but not at night.
We use a loudspeaker but the volume is adjusted according to the time of day, so it will not disrupt our Christian neighbours living close to the mosque, although there is no regulation on the matter.
Reverend Wolter Refualu of Advent Jesus Church said that Muslims and Christians in Latta were living together amicably. He said that members of his congregation sometimes donated food to Muslims for the breaking the fast.
It’s become our tradition. We’ve asked the congregation to bring food to our Muslim brothers to break the fast, and during Christmas they will do something similar for us.
He said the mosque and the activities there did not bother anyone.
We have no negative thoughts. We want to live peacefully, without any fear of going anywhere, including when performing our religious duties.
Hundreds of churches have been destroyed on Java since 1997. In 2003 alone fourteen churches were burned down in Jakarta, not to mention the many that were destroyed by the foreign (to Maluku) fighters of Laskar Jihad in the Maluku conflict. None have received funds from the government for reconstruction. What a disgrace.
In Christianity: Jesus teaches His children to love their neighbours like themselves and they are showing it.
Not to love just friends and family but also those who persecute them. He forgave those who tortured Him saying:”Forgive them, Father! They don’t know what they are doing.” Yes, Jesus is Lord, many times in the Bible, IN PUBLIC God the father said ‘ “This is my Son……..” and the innumerable miracles He did, we praise Him unlike any other.
Though He also said to shake the dust from your sandals.
A thorough study is required to really understand, the greatness of Christianity, the richness of the Roman Catholic Church. Read, study, think, reason before coming up with opinions.
This isn’t about religion, it is about FAIRNESS.
They rebuild mosque in predominantly Christian community.
How about churches, temples, viharas in predominantly Muslim community?
Oh, I must be dreaming…
Bradlymail – you said that the burnt-out chrches need to be rebuilt. Shhhhh! What’s to say that the buildings will be restored as churches?
Islam has a long, long tradition of destroying anything belonging to other religions, and putting a mosque on the ruins.
vivien: “Islam has a long, long tradition of destroying anything belonging to other religions, and putting a mosque on the ruins”
maybe it’s better to say “Indonesian Muslim has a long…” and not “Islam has a long…” because clearly those people doesn’t represent Islam. not one verse in the Quran said “destroy other religion’s place of worship!”.
remember when saladin entered jerusalem, he preserved synagogues and churches there. he prevented any destruction in any way to those places of worship. didn’t you watch “kingdom of heaven”? 🙂
vivien: “Islam has a long, long tradition of destroying anything belonging to other religions, and putting a mosque on the ruins”
HA HA HA HA HA… VIVIEN, READ HISTORY BOOKS PLEASE !!!
Stop whining like baby pig….
Read history leasson and you’ll learn that it’s not just Islam that has that “tradition”. Haven’t heard of “spaniard built the Catholic church on top of aztec temple in the center of mexico city (used to be called tenochtitlan)” ???
Pig … nguik nguik nguik.
I’m neither Jew, Christian, or Moslem.
Thanks GODSSSS !!!!!

No you are just a nasty, ill mannered boor!
vivian, yes I guess we better say Indonesian Muslim and not Islam, and yet not all Indonesian Muslims, just some stupid Indonesian Muslims which unfortunately grow more and more recently.
I prefer to blame our lame president and especially that little man kalla, who are unable to stop anarchy in our country which use Islam name to do bad things. For example, shot a priest in palu within ramadhan?
*sigh*
Munafikbangetloepade —> ????????????????????????????
——-
hehe, Oigal’s comment represents my feeling toward that Munafikbangetloepade.. ^^
thx Oigal.
Aside from the fact that it is rude and out of place, I guess there’s some truth in Munafikbangetloepade‘s comment:
Along with the Muslims, the Catholics and Protestants have their fair share in history, of the destruction of other religion’s worship place and the persecution other faiths.
Which one of them still does that in modern age is another question.
Hassan – you said
those people doesn’t represent Islam. not one verse in the Quran said “destroy other religion’s place of worship!”.
What does that mean – because Muslims did something that wasn’t mentioned in the Quran/Koran, they can’t be blamed for it? People are always doing things they weren’t told to!
Munafikbangetloepade – are you always this unpleasant? Are insults the best you can manage?
Watch the other posters – and learn how it’s done. With courtesy, and every effort to present an intelligent argument.
All your rudeness does is make your posts unreadable.
munafikbangetloepede you said that you neither Jew, Christian or Moslem so, you are son of b***h.
I get the feeling that this site has been infested by such a fanatic right wingers Christian (and Jew) pathetic whiners. They would jump on every opportunity to bash on their “enemy”, which in this case is Islam.
I saw some other day the posting on this site regarding “buying aircraft from Israel”. Based on the premise that Israel ~= Jew =~ enemy of Islam, and with that “enemy of my enemy is my friend” mentality, they — those fcking fanatic Christians — blindly applaused that stupid move by the corrupt government. of Indonesia…, and failed to see the real issue, that is: “Unnecessarily spending big amount of money for things of minor importance…, and worse yet, the money will go to the Zionists pockets, that — we all know — has that sheetty racist politics (side note: their claim on the promised lalalaland is the worst joke ever. hah). Beside, if we really need that aircraft why not let Indonesians themselves develop it… that would help the national industry.”
In the other posting — regarding the Morrocan waiter reminding that hitler-faced bonsai-sized Jusuf Kalla — I saw the similar mass masturbation, in the public. Ha ha ha. Hassan got a point there: “Has reminding people became a crime these days?”. Why the hell did you guys condemn it? Kalla didn’t seem to mind. So why the hell did you? But, we know, that’s just another pretext for you to channel out your fetish desire that is bashing on your enemy, Islam.
Those monkeys of pondok pesantren in Bogor with their raid — another form of mass masturbation — is another story. That “reminding” has gone overboard. _That_ deserves some attentions. However, those whinings and moanings of yours here sounded like that high pitched sound coming out of the noise hole of a pink baby pig. It wouldn’t do any good. But you did that anyway to fulfill your selfish need, bad mouthing on your enemy, Islam. Adorning those shyats coming out your mouth with sweety-lovey-words-of-Jesus didn’t help. Shyat is shyat.
Some people are doing real work on the field, educating Indonesian people on living in harmony. And you, with your annoying noises, will only screw their work. Shadafagup.
On the free speech: when your sugar-daddy-bear Benedick put _her_self in the fire with that Mohammed thingy, and the Mohammedanists expressed their discontent, you condemned them. What the fcku? Do you think they don’t have the right to get offended? (The way they express themselves is another matter).
Do you expect them to stay submissive, despite all the insultings you’re doing? Dream on. After all, they’re not Buddha. Ha ha ha (that’s soo true…). What if some notable Islam cleric said: “Jesus was gay and had sexual relationship with Judas, but then he betrayed Judas by having sex with some random boys on the beach (where they usually fished together… and had sex). That’s why Judas betrayed him back… to get even”? Or… “All those emotional love thingies coming out of Jesus mouth — where Judas usually put his deek in — are just another proof that Jesus was gay”?
The list is long…. But through all of them, the stinking slave mentality of you guys (especially the Indonesians) shines through. You would happily eat the poos excreted by slimey rats like richard doe — whose only interest is “mengadu domba” — just because they’re…. well,…, white (neither yellow, brown, black, or “keling”). Kidding? Just take a look at that shyatdump grsb.jakchat.com, and see how “respectful” those miserables are toward others. You think they wouldn’t do that to you (just because you’re non-Moslem)? Just wait and see, they will. Time don’t change people’s attitude, unless they have a willing and are able to change themselves.
Wrapping up: people like you make me look down on your semitic belief systems (no, Jews, you don’t own that word for yourself. When I said semitic I mean Islam, Christian, and judaism). Can’t you just keep your familiar fight inside your house?! (That deserted Arab land including that jerusalem the “promised” land, and the like). Don’t litter in my beloved country, Indonesia, with those shyats….
I’m neither Jew, Moslem, or Christian.
Thanks godssss….

munafikbangetloepede you said that you neither Jew, Christian or Moslem, so, you are son of b***h
You got it all wrong”¦. The real bitches are Hagar and Sara (your great great great great great”¦. mom). Which one of them are bitch-er is a topic for a postgrad. research.
SOB suits you better I believe.
Munafikbangetloepade is most certianly a Muslim.
See…? Ismail just showed his true color.
Calling me a Moslem, based on what? Because you dislike what I wrote?
Sorry to dissapoint you Ish…, but I’m very happy being what I am, that is non-Moslem, non-Christian, non-Jew.
I tell you, Ishmael — btw: that name sounds Moslem. Are you like those Zionist agents dressed like Arabs trying to bomb a place in London? — people like you are not really interested in the “peace”, “concensus”, “mutual understanding”, and the like….
All lip services.
Untrustworthy.
Fanaticism on the part of any religion is bad. I am glad that in this village Moslems and Christians can get along. Panca Sila forever!
O. Bule
vivien: you said “because Muslims did something that wasn’t mentioned in the Quran/Koran, they can’t be blamed for it?” yes they can. you should blame the culprits (a small group of Indonesian Muslims), and not the religion (Islam). they do not represent Islam. remember, you said: “Islam has a long…”
Ismail: you seemed to had the tendency to label ANYTHING you didn’t like as Islam. you hated the comments made by Munafikbangetloepade and you immidiately accused him of being a Muslim. a reverend had been killed in sulawesi and you magically knew that the killer must be a Muslim.
let me guess, if you slipped on a banana you must be thinking that it was a Muslim’s banana right?! you better get a psychiatric evaluation as I am quite sure that you must be suffering from some sort of phobia, or at least a rampant tendency to blame and smear other people’s faith (some people call it bigotry). Ismail, man of peace, “not capable of hate”?
What have the most recent posts got to do with churches?
And Munafikbangetloepade – what have your rantings got to do with anything?
I tried very hard to read your very long post made on October 19th, 2006 at 9:57 am. I got half way through but there was so much scatology and thinly-disguised swearing, and so many random insults and references to masturbation, that it made no sense at all, and I gave up trying to read it.
And why do you say that you’re not Muslim, but you incorporate the Muslim word “munafik” into your username?
have we run out of things to say about churches now?
Hey girl,
Thanks for bringing laugh to my day. You said:
—–
And why do you say that you’re not Muslim, but you incorporate the Muslim word “munafik” into your username?
—–
Are you saying that only Moslems can use the word “munafik”. Ok then, since I’m not a Moslem (nor a Jew, or a Christian — halley loe yeah!), I’ll just drop the word “munafik” from my nick and so that my nick now is “hypocritebangetloepade”.
That’s it. Now, does it still sound “Moslem” to you…? Ha ha hah.
godamfrik.
Woman,
… and … since the word “munafik” belongs to Islam (according to you), I hope you also will never use that word in your comments, since I assume you’re a Jesus-loving-Christian.
Or… find a hebrew synonim for it (if you’re a Jew or if you have some sort of attachment to that promised la la la land or any of those prophecies craps scattered around your semitic “holy books”).
Now, be consistent. Hah. 😀
Hassan, you can call me anything you want, Killing an infidel is a cardinal command in the Quran and the hadit. its only natural for Islam. Muslims call people that tell it as it is all kinds of name and if the person is found dead, the so called moderate like yourself simply wear a glee on your face.
how many Muslims took to the street after 9/11 to protest against the so called radical Muslims to defend Islam, instead there was rejoicing allover the Islamic world because infidels (kafir) were killed. what about 7/7 bombing in london where was the protest. what we have now is 1 out of 10 Muslims in the uk say if such will happen they will not report it if they know about it.
Islam is a mockery of everything that is godly, a religion where adultary is accepted as polygamy, where hate the right response to non-Muslims, where beating one’s wife is a sign of love……..
it is sad, really sad.
Ismail: you said “Killing an infidel is a cardinal command in the Quran and the hadit” no, it is not. the Quran and Hadith never commanded any unjustified killings, infidel or not. oh yeah, i remembered that you lied once when quoting the Quran by showing one verse but hiding the other that can give the correct context, so you don’t have any more credibility in quoting the Quran.
“instead there was rejoicing allover the Islamic world because infidels (kafir) were killed” give me proof, not hollow arguments of that. i did heard the Palestinians rejoiced, but not ALL OVER the Islamic world. you seem to have the tendency towards hyperbole.
“a religion where adultary is accepted as polygamy” adultery is defined as having extra-marital (outside of marriage) affairs. polygamy is a marital affair, where the man marry the women. you are proven tobe mistaken again (not the first time, isn’t it?).
“it is sad, really sad” you know what’s even more sad Ismail? when someone who actually knows nothing about a religion professed to have extensive knowledge about that religion and starts propagandizing ignorance. what you have done is a perfect example of ignorance towards other faiths.
hello Hassan, I have noticed that Muslims regularly want to redefine terms to align with there moral persuasion and I think its important to correct some of your perceptions for the sake of having this views documented.
calling me a lie will not simply throw the truth into the bin and seal it, sorry mate that won’t happen.
I am not as ignorant of Islam as you like to believe, unlike you though, i will tell it as it is. Off course killing an infidel is cardinal to Islam and its going on as we speak. let me quote other text that might help explain my point:
Qur’an 8:59 “The infidels should not think that they can get away from us. Prepare against them whatever arms and weaponry you can muster so that you may terrorize them.”
Qur’an 8:12 “I will terrorize the unbelievers. Therefore smite them on their necks and every joint and incapacitate them. Strike off their heads and cut off each of their fingers and toes.”
Qur’an 8:39 “So fight them until there is no more Fitnah” (disbelief [non-Muslims]) “and all submit to the religion of Allah alone (in the whole world).”
Qur’an 3:61 “If anyone disputes with you about Jesus being divine, flee them and pray that Allah will curse them.”
Qur’an 4:89 “If they turn back from Islam, becoming renegades, seize them and kill them wherever you find them.”
lets look at some hadit because, unlike Mohammed Khafi, you tend to believe in the hadit:
Bukhari:V4B52N260 “The Prophet said, ‘If a Muslim discards his religion, kill him.'”
Bukhari:V1B11N626 “The Prophet said, ‘No prayer is harder for the hypocrites than the Fajr. If they knew the reward they would come to (the mosque) even if they had to crawl. Certainly I decided to order a man to lead the prayer and then take a flame to burn all those who had not left their houses for the prayer, burning them alive inside their homes.'”
I think before you reply this post please take time to read your text properly and construct a sensible reponse, please don’t pop up your popular “cherry-picking” defence, because this text are in your scripture and they’re not wrongly quoted. let me remind you when you quoted the bible i did not tell you about cherry-picking nonsense, i simply defended my position, because religious instructions are verses not context.
if I am wrong you need not to convince me really, but your Muslim brothers in the “religion of peace” should be the ones that need convincing, ’cause almost everywhere that we have Muslims there pocket of conflict, volence and death.
certainly, there was rejoicing all over the Muslim world during and after 9/11, let me tell you of some of the places, somalia, Bangladesh, pakistan, nigeria, part of egypt, afghanistan and some part of Muslim india, most of the shiite block, please do check your facts perhaps i should remind you, that palestines are Muslims.
lets look at you other defence, what I said is quite simple, in Islam polygamy is acceptable but several years before Islam, in the bible Jesus said it was a sin of adultary and that is what it is today. I said bible standards are twisted by the Quran therefore what would have been immoral is acceptable, look at “muta” practiced by the shiite and some sect within the sunni community believe it’s acceptable. its nothing but prostitution with a religious gab.
look sir i suggest you make sure I am a wrong before you pen stuff, just yesterday a fatwa was passed saying- “its ok to hit your wife” off course this consistent with the Quran in Qur’an 4:34:
“Men are in charge of women, because Allah hath made the one of them to excel the other, and because they spend of their property (for the support of women). So good women are the obedient, guarding in secret that which Allah hath guarded. As for those from whom ye fear rebellion, admonish them and banish them to beds apart, and BEAT them. Then if they obey you, seek not a way against them. Lo! Allah is ever High, Exalted, Great.”
again Islam is a joke that makes ungodliness godly.
Ismail, if what you quoted here is true to have come from the Koran, they are indeed very chilling.
I expect to see a response that says that you “cherry picked” the verses, but regardless, to have such verses written in anywhere the book is definitely unsettling. Unless there are ammendments to those verses.
I look forward to hearing the truth.
Andrew, i do believe the Hassan will reply, i do hope we will have a sound defence, as for the text quoted from the Quran they are correct and you can check them for your self.
As I said before Islam is a joke.please do check my other correspondence with Hassan in this other blog:http://www.Indonesiamatters.com/742/terrorism-poverty-Islam/
thank you for you comment.
andrew: that my friend is called cherry picking a religious text. off course it’s not true. things must be placed on it’s proper context. as you may remembered, the bible itself had verses that sounded evil, but our friend Ismail had justified all of them. see my explanation below.
Ismail: you had finally prooved once and for all that you know nothing about Islam, but made claims as if you do.
Qur’an 8:59 referred to the pagan Arabs to whom Muhammad (pbuh) had previously made a pact, which they broke.
look at Quran 8:56-58.
56 – They are those with whom you made a covenant, but they break their covenant every time and they do not fear Allah.
57 – So if you gain the mastery over them in war, punish them severely in order to disperse those who are behind them, so that they may learn a lesson.
58 – If you (O Muhammad SAW) fear treachery from any people throw back (their covenant) to them (so as to be) on equal terms (that there will be no more covenant between you and them). Certainly Allah likes not the treacherous.
so you see, 8:59 must be placed on it’s proper context. surprise, surprise, Ismail hid the previous verses trying to make his point (make Islam look bad). not the first time, eh Ismail?
another example is the 8:39, the verse also referred to the pagan Arabs who were plotting to harm Muhammad (pbuh) and the Muslims at the time.
look the previous verses, Quran 8:30-34.
30 – And (remember) when the disbelievers plotted against you (O Muhammad SAW) to imprison you, or to kill you, or to get you out (from your home, i.e. Makkah); they were plotting and Allah too was planning, and Allah is the Best of the planners.
31 – And when Our Verses (of the Quran) are recited to them, they say: “We have heard this (the Quran); if we wish we can say the like of this. This is nothing but the tales of the ancients.
32 – And (remember) when they said: “O Allah! If this (the Quran) is indeed the truth (revealed) from You, then rain down stones on us from the sky or bring on us a painful torment.
33 – And Allah would not punish them while you (Muhammad SAW) are amongst them, nor will He punish them while they seek (Allahs) Forgiveness.
34 – And why should not Allah punish them while they stop (men) from Al-Masjid-al-Haram, and they are not its guardians? None can be its guardian except Al-Muttaqoon (the pious), but most of them know not.
and also 8:36 Verily, those who disbelieve spend their wealth to hinder (men) from the Path of Allah, and so will they continue to spend it; but in the end it will become an anguish for them. Then they will be overcomed. And those who disbelieve will be gathered unto Hell.
how many times should i proof you wrong Ismail, you are not telling the truth, and you have no credibility at all in quoting the Quran. why? because you’re not honest! verse 8:36 reminds me alot of you..
i can off course write more rebuttals about the other verses you quoted, but that will make my post too long. besides, I had proven Ismail wrong on too many occasions, I just don’t see why i should continue to do so. you Ismail, should proof me wrong this time around.
“lets look at you other defence, what I said is quite simple, in Islam polygamy is acceptable but several years before Islam, in the bible Jesus said it was a sin of adultary and that is what it is today.”
so now, Islamic law is judged based upon Christian doctrines? that’s just ridiculous, naive, and arrogant. why should Islamic law submit to what the bible say, if as we belief it, the bible is the one that had been corrupted and twisted. Ismail, your standards doesn’t have the rights to judge other people’s faiths and standards.
you sir, is one persisten bigot and dishonest liar. claiming that other religion is pure evil is the ultimate ignorance. I bet you did all these things because your church promised paradise if you smear other religions. funny, no one in my mosque told me to smear other faiths, I guess I’m better off than you.
Ismail, Islam is not the joke, the joke’s on you.
Those evil Indonesian Muslims doing discrimination towards their fellow non-Muslim Indonesians, like in Ambon. Indonesian Muslims has no difference at all to Americans and imperialist Europeans colonizing Southeast Asian countries from years 1500 to 1900. Have youy ever seen a Japanese hero program “Shaider”?
In Shaider, Fuma Leyar is the great conqueror to space and Muslim Indonesians are the same to Fuma Leyar and the creatures in space/outer space are all non-Muslim Indonesians. Most of all, space/outer space conquered by Fuma Leyar is whole Warga Negara Indonesia/Republik Indonesia.
karlira kanakahuko: saudi Arabian women don’t watch japanese kids programs. more signs of you lie uncovered.
Karlira I just want to remind you, NOT all Indonesian Muslims are against towards non-Muslims Indonesian. I think you are wrong! Please clean and refresh your mind. If you are Indonesian I believe you still have a good Muslim neighbours surround you. Peace, sister!
Dont want to add the religion debate in this column. But might be any reader know how the general situation in Ambon at this moment? Would it be ok to visit Ambon? As I would like to have my husband to Ambon and I don’t have any source as our relatives already leave ambon to other places after 1998.
About the news, I definitely happy with the news not because of I’m Islam or Christian more because I feel this is the true color of Maluku people as the way I remembered when I spent my childhood here. People that live side by side peacefully and tolerant. I never enjoyed the best Idul Fitri as much as Christmas celebration just like the way I had in Ambon. So yes despite of which mosque or later church being rebuilt, it is the spirit of move on and “pela” that I treasure from this news.

What about other churches which were burnt in Java and other provinces. Those churches need to rebuilt again. This shows the people in Latta Village has set very good example, where they can live together in harmony and peacefully.
