NU TV Boycott & Monitoring

Aug 31st, 2006, in News, by

Members of the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) are threatening to boycott television, unless they get their way on the gossip show issue.

At their last national conference the NU issued a fatwa forbidding their members, or nahdliyin, from watching a certain kind of television gossip show, or infotainment. Now the leader of the Central Java branch of the NU, Muhammad Adnan, is threatening stations that unless the fatwa is adhered to his members will boycott the box.

…so we can ask NU members to not watch television, in other words boycott it.
(…maka bisa saja kita minta warga nahdliyin tidak nonton televisi, dengan kata lain memboikot.)

This threat, he believes, will carry some weight with the television companies, but he says it is still only a possibility.

He also said that the NU, in conjunction with the Komisi Penyiaran Indonesia Daerah (KPID), Regional Broadcasting Commission, was continually monitoring television broadcasts, not only to catch out forbidden forms of gossiping, but also pornographic content, violence, and such like. The KPID was cooperating with this action by providing written reports to the NU on request, aiding the NU’s efforts in guarding the moral integrity of the nation.

I have heard a lot Muslims saying “Islam is the way of life”! But when confronted with something like this the so called “moderate” will say this is not Islamic! Even it is a fatwa issued by NU that has abt 30 million followers they will say it doesn’t represent Islam! Some even say there are 1.5 billion Muslims in the world how can all of them have the same pattern of thinking? Well it could be right for one thing that they always fight and never agree on anything! It could also be right to say that Islam is confusing and contradictive that’s why Sunni, shiah, wahabi, salafi , sufi, druze etc never agree with each other even they use the same sunna and Koran! But one thing they all agree on is shariah and exterminating the people of the book, not to mention the pagan! They will take care of their domestic problems later!
By the way how did this NU has so many followers if they all have different pattern of thinking reg Islam!

Where did you get such a statement Augusto? Anybody can go to any of the holy books and twist them to suit their needs. These people need educating and correcting but making inflammatory statements such as yours above only fan the flames of mistrust. If you want to argue a point there are plenty of ways of doing it without resorting to insults, try a little intellect and intelligent reasoning.

“And the good deed and the evil deed will never be equal; O listener! Repel the evil deed with a good one, thereupon the one between whom and you was enmity, will become like a close friend.” 41:34

because Augusto is trying to push his agenda: spreading hate and misinformation toward Islam.

tell me Augusto, you said “that’s why Sunni, shiah, wahabi, salafi , sufi, druze etc never agree with each other”, now did Catholics, protestants, adventists, maronits, orthodoxs, and all of Christianity’s small sects and schisms always agree with each other? they can’t even agree on deciding whether Jesus is god or just a human being till this day!

hi ! guys, tea time, please ! release your tension and have some break. all religions in this world give us good values in our life.Just respect each other..no man wins !..and listen to John lennon song ‘imagine’ for awhile ok !

  7. Molisan Tono says:

not so interested to comment about other beliefs here… but boycott the gossip show? hmmm, it’s a bit too late to do such thing isn’t it?

celebrity life style already marked deep in modern people brain. of course we have ability to choose not to be, but who can deny that the gossip channel has a big part in human industry?

better to monitor… not to boycott. NU have to consider major shifting in Indonesian modern life style. it will cost quite a lot of change.

  8. Bradlymail says:

frankly speaking and point of view,it is not necessary to boycott the tv stations….Indonesian people are more mature to decide and they are open-minded than NU…to NU please do not waste your times…thinks about other issues which are very important !!
