Antasari Azhar, Nasrudin Zulkarnaen & Rani Julianti

May 4th, 2009, in News, by

A drive-by shooting, the anti-corruption chief accused of murder, and a beautiful golf caddy.

Nasrudin Zulkarnain, the director of the company PT Putra Rajawali Banjaran (PRB), a pharmaceutical company and subsidiary of the state owned PT Rajawali Nusantara Indonesia (RNI), was shot twice in the head by a man on a Yamaha Scorpio motorcycle on 14th March 2009, as he was leaving the Modernland golf course, Tangerang, in his car.

Nasrudin Zulkarnaen.

A total of nine men have been arrested for the crime so far, they being:

  • Antasari Azhar (head of KPK, the mastermind)
  • Sigid Haryo Wibisono (a Commissioner of PT Pers Indonesia Merdeka (PIM)/ex-Golkar official (now PKB)/owner of Harian Merdeka, provided funding)
  • Williardi Wizard/Wizar (Ex Chief of South Jakarta Police, facilitator and gave kill order to Edo)
  • Heri Santosa (unemployed, drove the motorbike)
  • Eduardus Ndopo alias Edo (“swasta”, took the order to kill from Wiliardi Wizar)
  • Jerry Hermawan LO (“swasta”, contact between Edo and Wiliardi)
  • Daniel Daen (security guard, the shooter)
  • Fransiskus Tadon Keran alias AMSI (security guard, scoped out the area)
  • Hendrikus Kia Walen alias Hendrik (security guard, gave final order to Fransiskus to carry out the killing)

Heri Santosa (driver) & Daniel Daen (gunman) soon gave themselves up to police, apparently out of fear for their own lives. The mens’ lawyers claim they carried out the act because they were persuaded to view Zulkarnaen as an enemy of the state, because he was said to be plotting to ruin the 2009 national elections.

Of the nine four are from Flores.

Antasari Azhar

On May 4th Antasari Azhar, as the head of the national Corruption Eradication Commission (Komisi Pemberantasan Korupsi (KPK)) the most famous among the nine, was questioned by police and named afterwards as the prime suspect in the organising of the killing.

Antasari Azhar.

He first came under suspicion when police found a text message on Zulkarnaen’s mobile phone from Azhar saying:

You know the risk.

There are two versions as to why Antasari Azhar may have been moved to order a “hit” on Nasruddin:

  • Corruption & RNI & Golkar – some believe the murder is connected to corruption cases involving PRB and RNI, including the ongoing trial of Ranendra Dangin, the former finance director of RNI. On March 30th Ranendra’s trial began, for allegedly embezzling 45 billion rupiah from the sugar import monopoly controlled by RNI and the National Logistics Agency (Bulog). Zulkarnaen was expected to be called to give evidence against Ranendra.

In this version Antasari did the bidding of those he was supposed to be investigating and prosecuting, to protect them, and Golkar.

  • Love triangle – involving a 22 year old university student, Rhani or Rani Julianti, who worked part time as a caddy at the Modernland golf course, where both Nasrudin and Antasari played. Both men are said to have paid for her services, both on the golf course and off. Last year she became Nasrudin Zulkarnaen’s wife number 3.

It is said that Antasari became infatuated with Rani and that Zulkarnaen had threatened to expose the relationship to the gossip press. This is the theory that police seem to be working on.

Rani Juliani, caddy.

Defence

Meanwhile Antasari Azhar denies the charges. His defenders say that he is being framed, probably by sources in the Attorney General’s office, because Antasari led several aggressive investigations into corruption at the AGO.

The Attorney General’s Office had named Antasari as a suspect on May 1st, while police at the time only classified him as an “interested party” or witness. However on May 4th police questioned him for 7 hours and later detained him.

Antasari Azhar was a political appointment to the KPK, heavily supported by Golkar, and PDI-P. Sigid Haryo Wibisono, one of his co-defendants in the case, did much lobbying work among parliament members to garner support for Antasari’s nomination as KPK head. Antasari Azhar is not close to president Yudhoyono.

Nice piece, Seksi Mr. Patoengs Yth.

What’s your source on the following:

No footnotes on this one as there were a lot of sources and it was just too confusing but….smh, down the bottom.

Some of the police seem to be emphasising the love triangle thing, the threat to publicise Antasari’s supposed affair with the girl, doesn’t quite explain why those big shots are involved and why so much planning and money has gone into it.

  3. Odinius says:

    That story is absolutely crazy.

  4. Pena Budaya says:

Ahh.. The first scenario makes more sense rather than the second that developed by Indonesian police.

  5. diego says:

Who’s the creative team hired by the police force? I mean, they must be fired for the lousy, unconvicing love-story they came up with. I can create something better than that (still a love story though). I think it would be more interesting if you can make people to believe that those 2 guys are gays (one of them being bisexual)…, and that girl caused the 100% gay guy furious (jealous). This fits in with the current perception in indonesian people mind: gays are passionate, obsessive lovers, they’d kill for love. I guess that story would sell more, and more convincing.

  6. Haryo Legowo says:

The case describes the mentality of most government officials in Indonesia. As many people say, Indonesia gets crisis of mentality although Indonesian people have to do religious teaching everyday. The Indonesian high rank officials always search their personal passion such as position and women by using all ways including killing the other people or other bad and irresponsible ways. Maybe anytime God will be angry with this nation by giving natural disasters like earthquake, flood, mount eruption, and drought.

  7. Achmad Sudarsono says:

So what do you think, Patung ?

I personally would look on the press – foreign and domestic – with a skeptical eye, except if they’re reporting theories. There’s actually very limited appetite for the real facts in places

  8. Achmad Sudarsono says:

like Australia, as you know. As for the Indonesian press, well, a very blunt instrument. Hearing that Antasari got slugged by a cop makes me very suspicious, and inclined towards the frame-up. Antasari had a good rep when he was at the Jaksa Agung — I heard he lived very modestly.

  9. David says:

It’s very peculiar – I think I overplayed the Golkar cover up corruption angle in the post, which is a very contorted one, turns out Sigid Haryo Wibisono although he was once a Golkar man in Central Java is now a PKB man, Gus Dur version. Here he is

I try to, as you put it once, boil it all down, analysis is meant to be left to clever fellows like you, so I am primarily looking at the press, and there it is all about the girl, that Nasruddin was blackmailing Antasari, that he maybe had photos/video of Antasari and girl together in rm 85 I think of the Gran Mahakam hotel. But I agree the press here can be very dodgy, Detik last night was running entirely contradictory stories about all of this within minutes of one another.- He confessed….oops no he didn’t….

The full sms he was supposed to have sent was “sorry, this is just a personal problem between the two of us, if it gets blown up you know what the consequences will be”. Pretty dumb of him to send a sms threatening murder if that was what was planned though.

If it’s a frame up it is one hell of a massive and elaborate attempt, and to blow someone’s brains out for it, and tomorrow there will be a new KPK head and I don’t see any let up there.

  10. Ricky says:

I don’t believe, if Antasari is real intelectual dande for case murder of Nasarudin.
How we can make this man in high position but not have good character uhhhh.

  11. Andi.k says:

A good person to be a bad person, but I believe…it’s never done.

  12. Mike Oxblack says:

It’s all very strange. Could it be discredit the KPK whose mandate is up for renewal this year?

  13. Mike Oxblack says:

Remember former AG Mr. Baharuddin Lopa? He was very clean and died in Saudi, supposedly of natural causes although I suspected some Munir orange ‘n’ hemlock juice.

  14. Achmad Sudarsono says:

    Seksi Mr. Patoengs Yth.,

Seems odd he would send an SMS announcing the murder. Can’t help thinking blackmail or a frame-up. But I’m sure the upstanding and incorruptible POLRI will get to the bottom of it.

  15. Pena Budaya says:

I am afraid this incident – if Antasari were innocent – could lead to intimidation to KPK rather than discrediting the organ…

  16. boy says:

why scenario 1 sounds more sensible than scenario 2???

  17. fajar_drc says:

jangan sampai antasari di tahan lalu korupsi meraja lela d negeri ini

This is one nasty case and I fear for the girl’s life now.

wasn’t she reported to be missing?

Don’t underestimate hubris when it comes to men in positions of power. Especially if–as the post implies–that’s coupled with an obsessive sexual infatuation.

However, I think it’s also important not to pronounce the guy guilty based on some allegations and an SMS. It could be a frame-up.

  21. Pakmantri says:

There is a saying in Indonesian, “Jatuhnya laki-laki adalah karena harta, tahta dan wanita“, ( the fall of a man is because of money, power and women).
Antasari might be proven not guilty of harta and wanita later on, but he fell because of tahta (power).
Because of his success’ so far he felt the power rush and forgot to watch his back and being careless and disrespectful to some.

Hence another saying apply, “Semua bisa diatur” (Anything can be arrange). Your rise and fall can be arranged. That is Indonesia, it is complicated. Back room dealing is very important, not necessarily money or corruption but simple “kulonuwun” or “permisi numpang lewat” is important. Or else you’ll be disrespecting “para sesepuh” or the “dalangs” and for sure they’ll arrange your fall.

    Salam.

  22. Rob says:

The case has all the makings necessary for a juicy trial.

The love triangle is an interesting one. I guess for Rani this is one way of becoming a celebrity. Although, Lairedion might have a point about her safety.

I guess time will tell as this plays out, who is right and who is wrong on all fronts.

  23. Silverlines says:

Not changing the plate number of the motorbike, not destroying hard evidence like the gun used to assassin, I smell a lot of fishes that it stinks.

  24. Mike Oxblack says:

Looks like we’re all set for Indonesia’s next juicy show trial. I don’t think Rani is anything to write home about though as she pouts in her Man. U head scarf.

  25. daniel says:

    I support rhani julianti

    go

  26. David says:

    More of Rani,

  27. David says:

For the conspiracy theory angle, some people like Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) are saying he was set up because the KPK was going to investigate the electoral commission (KPU), which sorta ties in with

Heri Santosa (driver) & Daniel Daen’s (gunman) lawyers claim they carried out the act because they were persuaded to view Zulkarnaen as an enemy of the state, because he was said to be plotting to ruin the 2009 national elections.

The policeman, Williardi Wizar, or even Wizard, used to be chief of police of Kupang, NTT, which might explain why a lot of the foot soldiers in the killing were from NTT.

This is a mosque named after Wizar in Jakarta, wonder if they’ll change the name now….

It’s called Masjid Nur Abu Wizar, next to Polres, Jalan Wijaya, Kebayoran Baru.

  28. Mike Oxblack says:

A graduate golf caddie ay? An ignominious fate indeed, however I’m sure that getting to grips with old Nasrudin’s “club” could have fast tracked her to more lucrative work.

  29. Ali Zuhdi says:

What I have read from newspaqpe about the case of antasari it seems ilogical and much too smply.
Formerly I respect to antasari and his dedication to this country exactly as the hero.
I hope god will make clear in this case.

  30. dani says:

I don’t believed it. That all lier. I supported Antasari. He is not mistake.
