The swine flu scare, H1N1, effects on tourism and industries, and whether it is manmade.
A new mongrel variant of the swine influenza virus, similar to Spanish Flu, (influenza A subtype H1N1) that has struck Mexico and now spread to the United States and many other countries has Indonesia preparing for its possible arrival.
Real time map of swine flu cases.
Key – Pink markers are suspect. Purple markers are confirmed or probable. Deaths have no dot in marker. Yellow markers are negative.
In general the reaction has been calm. Health minster Siti Fadilah Supari says the fatality rate for H1N1 is only 6%, compared to 80-90% for H5N1, or bird flu. Nevertheless she says 80 hospitals in the country have prepared special facilities to deal with any outbreak.
Siti Fadilah Supari
Ever suspicious Siti Fadilah Supari said there was a chance swine flu was man-made:
I’m not sure whether the virus was genetically engineered but it’s a possibility
She also said Indonesia was too hot for the virus: cbnnews
H1N1 survives in countries with four seasons. The type A H1N1 virus hopefully won’t be able to sustain itself once it enters the tropical climate of Indonesia.
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono held a special ministerial meeting to discuss the matter and said afterwards:
We have to watch the airports, especially flights originating from Mexico, United States, and other pig flu affected countries.
While in Bali tourism authorities pleaded with the national government to not impose any hasty travel bans. Ngurah Wijaya of the Bali Tourism Board said surveillance at airports was sufficient for now. Visitor arrivals to the island were still normal, at 2,500 to 3,000 per day, said Ida Bagus Subhiksu of the Tourism Department. detik
Farmers, Pigs & Pork
Drh Sigit Hanggono of the East Java Livestock Office (Dinas Peternakan (Disnak)) said he was worried the livestock industry would be harmed by the swine flu issue, and that the matter was overblown. jakartapress
Of the same department but in North Sumatra Drh Hj Teti Lubis said Disnak would try to educate the public about swine flu, so as to minimise the risk that irresponsible people would cause trouble for pig farmers and consumers of pork, considering that the disease was passed person to person, not via contact with pigs or pork. beritasore
Pig farmers in Boyolali, Central Java, complained that pork prices have fallen 15% in recent days, largely because many producers are trying to offload what they have quickly. suaramerdeka
Indonesia is a large exporter of pork, mainly to Singapore, but as of writing no bans have been placed on this trade by partner countries. Indonesia has however banned the import of pork, however this trade is small.
Due to my informations she is a specialist in cardilogy and angiology (Sp JP)
Ooops. My bad. Thanks for correcting. Spesialis Jantung dan Pembuluh Darah not Paru-paru. Sufficiently proven as long her profession is concerned, pls read my prev quote in Indonesian.
I think other qualifications are needed to be a minister of health than such to be a cardiologist able to confirm the diagnosis of tako-tsubo syndrome.
Even if this article reported accurately, her words were carefully arranged. Otherwise, it can be used as a law suit against her. Sensitive atmosphere here hmm … but she is not George Bush anyway. As about other qualifications, beyond my knowledge to give rating. Consult her lecturers perhaps.
According to my CV I am pretty fanastic
It should read, need English translation from Indonesian reference.
You are Indonesian? or just speaks Indonesian?
As about her awards, may be arrounds cardiology etc. Researchers do researches and got award.
BTW..Your Kampung reference sucks..the reality was Indonesian locked down any viable research not opened it ..
It was originally quoted from the Economist. The original article likely be proprietary (mbayar).
Observato,
nice list of awards. I think we should differentiate between reputation according to awards one got and reputation according to daily work.
As a representative of a country she shouldn’t give any statement without proof like this:
“I’m not sure whether the virus was genetically engineered but it’s a possibility”
It sounds like if I suggest that I’m not sure whether the apocalypse will happen in 20 years or 20 months. It sounds really like paranoia.

In what way, exactly? One of the things about George W. Bush is that he has excellent qualifications: graduated from Yale, Harvard Business School, was CEO of several companies, governor of Texas, etc.
On paper, he looks like a great candidate for president. But we know the reality. So actually, you stumbled on a comparison that tells us exactly why qualifications are of limited value.
Award or no award, specialist or not, her comments sound like something that comes out of an idiot’s mouth. Oh but wait, she’s a politician, so that shouldn’t have come as a surprise.
For someone who majors in cardiology, she says and assumes a bit too much about genetic engineering. I’m sorry… but if she has any degree or major publication about molecular biology then maybe I would believe her a little. Because from my point of view, natural mutations is more likely to happen rather than a successful genetic manipulation. And for the record, I AM a DNA technology student.
To create a deadly virus as a mass murder weapon… you will need like, years of research and a lot of money. AND, I personally would not pick an influenza virus, because that’s just stupid.
Three reasons are good enough:
1) it has a very high degree of mutation, so it will make it an unpredictable test subject.
2) it’s spread through the air and more likely to be pandemic, I wouldn’t want my virus to backfire at myself wouldn’t I?
3) Only smart people knows how hard (almost impossible) it is to create a medicine for influenza because of its rapid mutation.
oigs- Although Andy’s bile is well over the top again
I doubt it, I haven’t posted on this topic until right now!
In what way, exactly?
As about her professional records, my previous quote in Indonesian has shown it.
(Do you need english translation from the Indonesian source?).
But she is clearly different from G.W. Bush on:
… the way his business is related to Bin Ladin family (source: Farenheit 9/11 movie), yet he choose one Ladin named Osama as his ‘common-enemy’.
… the way he confidently told people there was an omni-potent terrorist called Osama hiding at Afghanistan, the way people believed on it, and the way he organized terror campaign over the country.
… the way he ever believes and told people Iraq ever had misterious alien weapons need to be destroyed, the way people believed on it, and the way he organized mass murdering to the people of Iraq, and the way he found nothing upon the destroyed country.
Did he need evidences to call other country axis of evil, didn’t he? Has scientists conduct a single research about ‘evil’?
Lately, even Obama still believe strongly on the myth as justification to occupation upon Afghanistan, talking blah blah .. with no evidences but anonymous video recordings.
As an addition to her professional records as cardiolog, she is just a bit heroic. People would support her for the essence of her struggle. Transparency upon WHO data is a good thing. Justice is good thing, too.

150 scientific works is a huge list, but I agree someone may has weakness on certain fields, such as on diplomatic things. Reminds me to old sayings: no body is perfect.

Yea..I agree what business is of Obama if some morons want to throw acid in the faces of women who don’t cover up or who want to go to school. The rest of the muslim world can be relied upon to ensure basic standards of human deceny are maintaned..witness Dafur for example.
Seriously, I agree time the West stopped trying to interfere in the Muslim world, save the time money and lives. Let the Muslims world take responsibility for their own conditions.

Don’t you mean “some bules and some brown people?”
Let the Muslims world take responsibility for their own conditions.
Lain ladang lain belalang, lain lubuk lain ikannya.
Desa mawa cara, negara mawa tata.
Oigal, painting a giant society with single casuistic worst color is a mental disease. Should Indonesia assist Australia to overcome phaedophilia and incest problem?
I think Astrajingga was being right in stating his advice to me 🙂
Astrajingga, thanks for being in my side. Many weird opinions here but I just try to make people here be able to read what a native Indonesian see, while I am learning written English he3x. Sambil menyelam minum air lah … kali2 ada pahalanya juga.

I think ‘the west world’ itself contains many humorous things from the eye of an ‘eastern person’. Opinions here reveal many humorous ways of thinking as described by your words: backward, corrupt, stupid etc. Thanks karma law. Lain ladang lain belalang, lain lubuk lain ikannya.
I thought the H1N1 Influenza A virus only thrives in hot countries? Especially during summer time. Which is now… the places that have gotten the virus are mostly hot places, right?
Has it occurred to this woman that the H1N1 virus is thriving in most Central American countries, such as Panama, El Salvador and Nicaragua which, being near the equator, are just as tropical as Indonesia? I have been to Mexican Yucatan Peninsula and I can assure her that it, too, was hot and tropical as anywhere in Asia. Obviously, geography is not her strong suit.
We have seen a major increase in news coverage here in Minnesota. Seems a lot of suspect cases are sprouting up everywhere. A pig and the State Fair has been confirmed of carrying H1n1.
I just purchased procedure masks with a universal (mask/respirator) seal for me and my employees.
Going to keep my ear to the ground! Hopefully things get better.

Perhaps the old saying..fits nicely here..
