Women Only Train Cars

Jul 15th, 2006, in News, by

The Islamically oriented Prosperous Justice Party, PKS, is considering whether to change the railway law so that it requires every train to provide a women-only car.

In a debate over amendments to the RUU Perkeretaapian, the railways law, a member of the special committee dealing with the subject from the PKS, Abdul Hakim, said last week, 14th July, that the measure was needed because of the “inhumane conditions” of most train cars, especially in Jakarta.

And those who bear the biggest brunt are pregnant, elderly or working women who use the railway service.

He said sexual harassment was a pervasive problem on trains.

Women should be respected and Islam puts women in a high position.

He added that the party’s sole intention with the proposal was to protect female passengers from harassment, not to attempt to enforce Islamic law.

He later said that Indonesia may not be ready for such a policy.

We (the PKS) are still debating it. It’s true Indonesians may not be at the level where they can accept it. But I think it would be good for us.
(Kita masih terus membahasnya. Memang budaya kita masih belum menerima ini. Tapi saya pikir ini untuk kebaikan bersama.)

Most electric trains operating in Jakarta already have designated women-only cars, but enforcement of the regulation is nonexistent due to the huge number of passengers and shortages of cars.

That is why we want to include a special provision on cars for women, so that it will be mandatory and operators that violate it will be punished.

A transportation expert was skeptical about the proposal’s feasibility, especially on overcrowded trains. The chairman of the City Transportation Council, Soetanto Soehodo, said:

Such a policy would be best applied outside of rush hours when trains are not being used at full capacity.

Tomaculum: i were not trying to argue about historical accounts. I was just trying to proove to some people who always try to imply that Muslims are the only ones who commits violence these days. i gave them examples of other horrific violences which were not done by Muslims. therefore, their ratonale that all violences comes from Muslims can be considered nullified.

and please excuse my ignorance, but what’s wrong with my statement “wrong religion”? is every religion the “right religion”? what I meant with the “wrong religion” is any other religion that does not guide humans to the right path, or religions that have shirk in them.

  2. Tomaculum says:

    Hassan,
I’m agree with you. Almost every violent act in the human history (not only nowadays) is reasoned and explained with religion: North Irland (Catholics vs. Protestants), India (Hindus vs. Muslims), Violence against the South and North American Indians (Christians against “Pagans”), Compression of the Beng kauw-Religion in the ancient China, Compression of the Baha’i in Persia etc, etc.
In one of my comments I wrote: Violence is not part of the Islam teaching, but many confused zealots abused Allah’s words to reason their misdoings.
The same phenomenons exist also in the Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism and the other religions.
Maybe I have misunderstood your comments, but you wrote on Sept. 13th:
“It is the Christianity who had been responsible for the last millenia, not Islam. WW I and II? Hiroshima? Holocaust? Imperialism? Black (African) slavery?”
Ismails objection from Sept. 11th “Islam is a negative to the world ……” shows his lack of understanding and that his mind is already blurred by the smoke of anger and maybe hate. I think such kind of argumentation will aggravate the dissencion of the religion.
But I wonder too, why many Moslems suppose they have to defend their religion with all means. Is it inferiority complex? Low self confidence? Do they believe, that their brothers and sisters in faith will convert in droves if there is a state of worship of an other religion in their village? Or someone believes that their motives are lawful?
Or is it just logical thinking: I have a weak faith, so I have to try to eliminate all seductions from my neighbourhood prophylactically?

Btw: can you name a “wrong religion”?
What is the “right path”? A right path in my religion isn’t automatically the right one for you, is it? So is my religion, according to your definition, a wrong religion?

Tomaculum, you spin all this words, hoping it will douse the reality, you and Hassan like to slip into the past to justify the madness called Islam, you refer to and i quote

shows his lack of understanding and that his mind is already blurred by the smoke of anger and maybe hate. I think such kind of argumentation will aggravate the dissencion of the religion.

i need to be clear, i am angry with Islam from the understanding that its violence and hate is a product of its text, take a look at the content of my write up and get off this politically correct bandwagon, in the first place Islam is the exact reason the 75% of the violence and death taking place in the world and sure next week you will have more of its manifestations.

please do try and understand violence in Christianity unlike Islam, it has nothing to do with the words of Christ. you will not find anywhere, Jesus told to kill or even kill in revenge. please reason carefully before you endorse a LIE.

Again what teaching of Islam are you talking about, offcource the prophet committed several act of violence and not just in self-defence, he assasinated, he robbed, tortured and killed a man and married his wife. he took slave and said it was ok to sleep with slave women. what in the world are you talking about. Mohammed was vile, wicked and immoral. where do you guys spin this lost lies from-Islam is peaceful-ha!, a fruit is a product of it tree.

finally, please the truth will not suddenly turn into a lie because you want it to, i do not critizice Islam from just the behaviour of Muslims, but the behaviour however, is a pointer to its source Islam, the al-Quran and the hadith. and they do precisely what the prophet did and encouraged.

but same can’t be said of the so called Christians you mentioned, Jesus insisted on monogamy, love our neigbour as ourselves, loving and praying for our enemy, he told us not to take revenge that we should leave it to God and not even fight for him.this things are not human they are however divine, so this so called Christians that killed could not have claimed the examples of Christ or his words.

    its really that simple.

“I hail from the country with heroes and I pity the country without any”

It is a sad state of affairs when one chooses to throw stones versus teach and debate.

“Whoever controls the keys to heaven will also control the world”

That is what this is all about ya?

Women on trains? What a weak attempt for men to continually control women and act as if they cannot defend themselves. They are such the weak kind ya?

Women only trains is prejudice and pathetic. Of course, history has already told us that. Did the Romans have woman only chariots?

All “save face”, don’t say a word attitudes that women currently have are created by men over thousands of years. Men created their fear to stand tall and man continues to disgrace them with ignorant laws and pathetic attemps to disguise “protection” as a veil to man’s insecurities.

Talking about rape in the USA……WAHHHHHH.. HELLO…….Population differences and LOTS of factors cause rape statistics. RAPE is a disgrace and forcing women to feel ashamed for a crime committed against their bodies is a bigger disgrace. At least the USA has laws to protect these women and the majority of th THE USA population is on the Rape victims side.

  5. Ade says:

Just try to learn about islam further guys, you guys speak only from the state of your mind without knowing more and more about Islam itself. Read the Holy Quran, read the Prophet’s hadith, and islamic books and literature. Then you can talk about islam. Otherwise, you just talk without and strong foundations in your words.

  6. Riccardo says:

Which car would the thousands of Banci (lady boy) ride in?

I wonder what they do in Iran, because the Ayatollah long ago issued a fatwa that allows LadyBoys/transsexual activity and calls it religiously OKAY. That is why most of the “sexy” dancers at clubs are Iranian LadyBoys — the women aren’t allowed.

  7. Ali says:

In fact, women-only train cars are pretty common in Japan, so it’s not a new idea.
