Contractual Romance in Puncak

Aug 2nd, 2006, in Society, by

Rich Arab men seeking quickie “marriages”, and then quickie divorces, in the resort town of Puncak, near Jakarta, may no longer be welcome.

Vice president Jusuf Kalla famously that Puncak, in Cisarua, Bogor, West Java, should be promoted as a destination for Arab men seeking the company of young women willing, for a fee, to marry the men, and then divorce, in a certain Islamic fashion, once the men were ready to return home:

The marketing [of tourism to Indonesia] needs a better campaign based on the visitor’s appetite and position. If there are a lot of Middle East tourists traveling to Puncak to seek widows and divorcees, I think that it’s okay.

He said such Arab visitors, and their amorous liasons, would bring numerous benefits to the women and any resultant children, as well as the country’s entertainment community, long dominated by attractive persons of mixed race.

If the women get modest homes even if the tourists later leave them, then it’s okay. The children resulting from these relationships will have good genes. There will be more television actors and actresses from these pretty boys and girls.

said Kalla, a man small of stature but big of mouth.

The proposition that Indonesian women should be encouraged to, more or less, prostitute themselves Kalla later vigorously denied having made:

I never said that Indonesian women should be used as a tourist drawcard. I was shocked at the report in the Jakarta Post, I knew there would be a reaction.

But, he also offered a little defence of what he had apparently said:

Don’t let it just be westerners who marry our women, why can’t Arabs marry Indonesian girls.

The practice of short term marrying in Puncak is an established one. Apparently women who engage in such activity expect to be paid between 5 and 10 million rupiah a month, half for themselves and half for their pimps.

In terms of the marriage law however the practice is illegal, as five Saudi Arabian tourists have just found out. Five men with very long names were yesterday deported from Indonesia after having been caught in the company of young women in Puncak. One of the men, Faleh bin Nghaimesh bin Mahana Al Harbi, is a policemen in Medinah, it is said. The women were also arrested but one of them was released after the police found no proof she had been involved in such a marriage.

By marrying local women on contract basis, they have disrupted public order and have no respect for the laws in the country.

said one Suharyanto of the Bogor Immigration Office. They were deported because they had breached Law no 1/1974 on marriage and Law No.9 /1992 on immigration, he said. Suharyanto vowed to keep up the pressure on lustful foreigners:

Twice a day, or if necessary three times a day, we will launch such raids, specially at villas in Puncak and environs, some 30 kilometers south of here, as well as at the houses where expatriates are staying.

Some people have left such hypocritical and ignorant comments and whats even more unbelievable is that they try to view themselves on the moral high ground. Indonesia is famous for its sex tourism with the western countries , much more so than the Arabs and other Muslims that you are blaming on. I have seen Numerous Australians. French , British , and you name it , switching girls each night , in Jakarta , Bali and other places. However , the government doesn’t stop them or arrest them or deport them. You sell your daughters for sex to other men without thinking twice. At least the Arabs put up a facade of marriage , these westerners don’t even do that.

john brown, are you an arab hiding behind a “western name”?

So who are the hypocrites here?

  4. Reville says:

Has anyone considered what the women think of all this?

    Women like Sex u know
and many have fantasy about foreign men

They dont just have sex for money you know, they also do it for their on curiosity and satisfaction

stop being so pious on behalf of women
let them make their own choices

only protect those forced to prostitution
    so protect children
and protect mothers forced by bein left by deadbeat husbands who leave them in poverty

but if shes just doing it because its easy money – and it is, easiets money there is
    then thats her choice
no need to attack the customers

All of you are bashing Arabs and pretending that they are the divils while you are inocent
Arabs are the most gentelman among all of you and behiviour of few does not give you the right to generlize for all. What about the entire european who are traveling to Inonesia
For the same reason, how about japaniess, American and the rest. Now you are gunging against few Arab kids who find fake way of enjoyment while sex is everywhere even in their own country. You all as stupid as those kids for promoting hates

  6. Realist says:

Arabs have a BAD reputation for good reason! They are hypocrites of the highest degree, nor do they respect women or non-Arab Muslims! They claim Muslim brotherhood but they refuse to let “their” women marry Indonesian or any other Non-Arab Muslim men while having their cake and eating it! At least even Israelis allow their women to marry who they want, and I’ve heard of stories of Israeli women married to Indonesian men in fact. Before you spout off pro-Arab worship sentiment, work in the Middle East under them and see how much you really like them! Chances are, you’ll probably rethink your opinion of them over time!

  7. Realist says:

Btw, I’m NOT saying that all Arabs are bad and that the rest are all angels as there are good and bad EVERYWHERE; I’m sure the Arabs got really good gems of people too (and those you met in Indonesia were probably those you were lucky to come across) but the problem is they seem to have a really high percentage of bad seeds who cause this bad image! So you better take off those rose tinted glasses when looking at Arabs and see things as they really are. Thanks!

That is the first intelligent comment in this discussion.

Most men have this delusion that they own their women – like property. Then they use their religion to back them up, to “make it right” and to excuse them. Also the threat of god’s punishment is enough to scare people into behaving the way they want.

In Islam (and other religions), prostitution is illegal, but marriage is OK. Problem is that marriage ITSELF is a form of prostitution in so far that the men are essentially BUYING the women!

OK, now at this point you might say “Well, no! Not all marriage is like that! It’s about two people being in love and living together!”…. and if you are to be right, then we can draw one and only one conclusion:-
WHY are these men giving women money for no reason!?

in which case… why marry at all?

  9. Casman says:

How can war on the “short-term marriage” be justified while there is no declared war on common prostitution?! Now to answer some people who still have some logic: while supposedly there is “no evidence” or verses from the Koran on the legitimacy of “this kind” of marriage -though this is controversial-, there is indeed NO evidence on it being forbidden! The base in Islam is that everything is allowed unless proven otherwise, and while the rituals of common marriage are still applied, I dare anyone to prove that it’s forbidden on unethical.

Strange, in the west, they have something called “common law marriage” where a couple may live and sleep together for years without any contract, dowry nor stipend, and yet it is a clear form of adultry before all religions. Some prostitutes or sluts may also sleep with men for their looks. These marriages are performed in Las Vegas legally, where prostitution is also legal. Money is not the way to distinguish between marriage and prostitution. It’s the pillar of which the relationship is built upon. If two lambs were slaughtered by the same Muslim man, where he says “Bismillah wa-Allahu Akbar” on one lamb and he doesn’t say it on the other one, of course one meat becomes “halal” and the other one is “haram”! Religiously speaking..

  10. Oigal says:

Outstanding logic Casman, please send me your daughter’s details as I have short term contract ready to go. I defy you to justify how a filthy old man coming to Indonesia to purchase a woman with no intention of making his long term equal partner is conducting anything but prostitution under another name. Rituals do not equal ethics behaviour does.

“common law marriage” where a couple may live and sleep together for years without any contract, dowry nor stipend

Yes but they do buy their meat via contract, dowry or stipend.

Some prostitutes or sluts may also sleep with men for their looks.

I have been to Puncak and seen those dirty old men preying on young girls and certainly no girl there is sleeping with them for their looks.

If two lambs were slaughtered by the same Muslim man, where he says “Bismillah wa-Allahu Akbar” on one lamb and he doesn’t say it on the other one, of course one meat becomes “halal” and the other one is “haram”! Religiously speaking..

On the other hand, the same man does do not get to paw, slobber and grope one lamb and then give it back to butcher when his hunger is sated just because he said ‘Bismillah wa-Allahu Akbar” Religiously Speaking..

  12. Omar from Saudi says:

    Dear All,
I have to comment on this since my country is named here though it is an old post. I am Saudi and I have to say contractual short-term marriage is not ethical nor religious.

The marriage is a sacred religious contract between the two humans and God, the purpose is to settle down, produce and raise the kids so that they will have a positive contribution to the society. The short term marriage does not fulfil this requirement so I urge you not to call it an “Islamic” marriage by any means.

This is basically a person who wants to have sex without feeling remorse as a sin.

    Omar
