Bromo Tengger Converts to Islam

Mar 2nd, 2009, in News, by

Some of the last holdouts against Islam on Java convert under the guidance of Hidayatullah.

On 1st March 2009 at Tempuran, Senduro, Lumajang, East Java 70 Muslim converts (mualaf) from the Tengger ethnic group (suku Tengger) were married in a mass ceremony.

The 70 people were part of a group of 227 Tengger people that had converted from Hinduism to Islam in mid 2007. Previously the 70 had been married according to Hindu rites, however these marriages were not officially registered or recognised.

They originate from Wonocempoko Ayu, Argosari, and Burno in Senduro, about 8km from Mt Bromo. 400 people from these villages have converted to Islam in recent years.

One man, Suyanto, said bmh.or.id

Wow, I’ve been married twice but with the same wife. Before I married according to another religion, now in the Islamic way. I’m so happy to be married within Islam after saying the confession of faith last year.

The Islamic marriages were organised by the fundamentalist group Hidayahtullah and the Lumajang local government. The couples paid nothing. Samsudin from Hidayatullah said: detik

So, people who convert to Islam will have their weddings paid for by Hidayahtullah.

Tenggerese are generally Hindu and traditionally live around or near Mt Bromo, and consider themselves to be direct descendants of the rulers of the last Hindu kingdom of Java, Majapahit. See “Hindu Javanese: Tengger Tradition and Islam” by Robert W. Hefner, Amazon, Google Books.

But considering the length of time the dutch were in power, we can say that the dutch were the greatest penyebar-agama-islam in history.

I only wish Geert Wilders would read this.

    Lairedion

No I hadn’t booked any lately but I feel sorry for all the ones that I had before.

    @ All

What’s the fuss with Javanese converting to Islam? A Javanese is always Javanese whether he/she is a moslem/Christian/Hindu. You should be very alarmed if Indians, Bules or Africans mualaffed.

ET Another link for you: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Status_of_religious_freedom_in_Malaysia. The Lina Joy case is interesting.

    @AAB,

I think we should worry. Discussed here before on IM:

  5. Aluang Anak Bayang says:

    @ Lairedion

We are the majority, so chances of a terrorist being Javanese is higher.

    Lairedion, schmerly,

Thanks for the links on Malaysia. I know what to do now. Or not to do.

The Malaysians have quotas for all sorts of things; admission to University, minimum Malay shareholding in Companies, and even preferential treatment when buying public listed securities and housing. No wonder the intelligent Chinese Malaysians left for Singapore. And apostasy is a huge NO NO in Malaysia.

Chinese, Greek, Romans and Indian where advanced for their times in their times. At the times of the Muslims they perfected some of the mistakes that these civilisations had made

    Mohammed – indeed!!!

Hehe – Ayunan Anak Payung, Aren’t you just the little rascal eh? Of course as you mention, us Javanese will always remain Javanese in our hearts no matter what you do to us or even what we eat and drink – just the other day I had Shepherds pie, baked beans, and a big glass of cider for my supper, my blankon didn’t change colour though, and my sarung remained neatly folded – I was amazed !!

Actually AAP, looking at you, you could be touched a bit with the Indian brush, are you sure you are not a buah cinta garam masala?

    Wis luwe, ore jamu !

    Trap

Feeling so sad after reading the news. For those of you Bromo Tenggerians who do not convert to islam, please DO NOT do it. Stay in your current religion/belief.

Converting to Islam is like fishes get into fish-trap, you can get in but there is no way out, trapped. Islam does not recognize religious freedom which means you may freely choose any faith to believe in and to leave what you not believe in (anymore). Islam does not allow its followers to convert to other beliefs (murtad), if you do it then you are halal tobe killed. I dont make it up, the holy Koran says it. There is only one way in, no WAY OUT.

So before you, guys, convert to Islam, learn Islam ins and outs, read the Koran and hadits and you will see that Islam in merely a cult built by Muhammad for his interests by exploiting the fear and the stupidity.ignorance of the people.

I lived and was raised in Islamic family and tradition, moslem by birth, so I know how full of lies and illusion-based the religion is.

    You have been warned.

  11. Mohammed says:

To Endo Hanafi, Clearly you don’t know what Islam is and probably don’t know how to practice it. Just because you grow up in a Muslim family does not mean you know what Islam is. People tend to bring culture and prejudices into Islam even though Islam does not allow for this. Had it been a cult then nobody would accept Islam. What you probably see within your own family might not even be Islamic. This is due to your ignorance.

Yet thousands of Westerners accept Islam without anyone forcing them to or tricking them. Why? Because they actually educate themselves about Islam and then see it is the truth.

The sad thing is that I used to think exactly like you. Then I stopped one day and said to myself I am not going to take anyones words for it I am going to learn Islam properly from proper sources. What I found out was that I knew nothing about Islam. I knew what my parents had taught me. In other words I was a sheep just following along. But I woke up. It is a shame that Muslims today are brought up to just believe and have hatred for non-muslims or even Muslims because of the ignorance of their families.

However if you study Islam properly like the 100’s of thousands that accept it each year then you will come to the same conclusion that I and many others have come to.

  12. schmerly says:

Mohammed.. But what are you a Sunni or Shiite Moslem? because there seems to be problems between these two interpretations of Islam? so how do you choose which to follow?

  13. schmerly says:

Mohamed.. Btw, what happens if your parents are say, Sunni Moslem? but you want to follow Shiite, would there be a problem?

  14. Mohammed says:

I am Sunni however I do have many Shiite Muslim friends. The problem occurs because of the ignorance of the older generations due to the fact that they were lacking in their faith.

This is changing now days. The ones that are not brainwashed or smart enough to learn for themselves don’t have this issue. In fact to the point where sunni and shiite muslims are starting to pray together. I think within the next 2 or 3 generations to come this issue will be all but gone.

I have a friend who his family are sunni muslim and his uncle and him are shiite. Like wise my wife has a friend who accept Islam from Shiites however she chose to become sunni and she has another friend whos parents are shiite but identifies as sunni.

You see. It comes down to how you learn your religion and what sources you use. The authentic sources are clear from the fabricated ones. When you sift through them you come to realise that there isn’t really much difference between sunni and shiite.

Today I look around me and see non religious parents with religious children. Islam is coming back and very quickly through the younger generations who tend to be more educated than the older generations.

  15. schmerly says:

Mohammed.. Thanks for your input it was just a thought I had, as with Catholics and Protestants there are still some areas of conflict within their respective religions, I’m saying this as a total layman, and so would imagine that Sunni and Shiites theology is a totally different concept, as I said I have no idea it was just something I was thinking about.

  16. mohammed says:

Don’t be fooled into thinking these groups within Islam are like catholics and protestants in Christianity. They are not. Unlike Christianity Sunni and Shiite Muslims believe in exactly the same thing in terms of the core concept of Islam. Where they differ is in the polotics where the Shiites believe that Ali the cousin of the prophet Muhammad (pbuh) should have been his successor not Abu Bakr may God be pleased with them both. From this issue stems all the other issues that exist.

When statistitians classify religion they tend to (in most cases claisfy Islam as a whole whereas they tend to break Christianity up into different groups as does the vatican itself recognise Catholics as completely seperate from all other Christians.

The difference between Islam and Christianity is that Islam has 1 and only 1 Quran. In Arabic, hasn’t changed once since it’s revelation 1430 years ago whereas the bible is continually being modified updated and fixed. Even recently they discovered a bible written by Jesus’ own brother in a Church in Israel that is older than the new testament and confirms what Muslims say about Jesus and denies his divinity. Watch this http://2believeornot2.blogspot.com/2009/03/old-bible-confirms-quran.html and read this http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=101389895&ft=1&f=1016

These are by Christians themselves or former Christians.

If you want the proof I will provide this.

Also for those that have been saying Islam is bad to women have a look at the following
    http://2believeornot2.blogspot.com/search/label/Women
    http://www.islamswomen.com/index.php

This is just a micro example of the truth.. It is out the you just have to look and be open minded

  17. mohammed says:

Also for those who are interested. Here is an example of how non Muslims and even ignorant Muslims try to decieve the world about Islam http://www.islamnewsroom.com/content/view/695/52/

  18. schmerly says:

mohammed .. OK thanks for the info.

  19. diego says:

Allright, we go full circle again….

Somone now “proves” jesus was a conman, probably this can be used to counter the accusation that mohammed was a conman. And then, what about moses. I like to think he was a conman, as well.

Guys, drop those semitic mumbo jumbos already, would ya?

  20. mohammed says:

nobody is proving that jesus was a conman, nor was mohammed nor was moses (peace be upon them). what this clearly shows is that christians were fooled at the time by the so called roman christians into adding pagan worships into the religion. this is christian history and the church doesn’t deny these facts. yet they still accept it today.

isn’t it obvious that something is wrong when a religious body has to hold councils in order to establish the divinity of jesus, the crucifixion, easter, christmas (btw not the real dates according to christians) and other things so many times. the history is there you just have to search for it.

the christian world was conned by the romans and even though they know this they stilll believe.

  21. Lairedion says:

Basically the God-freaks (Jews, Christians and Muslims) are all trapped in the same lie. Now in the 21st century they’re still fighting each other and dragging the whole world in their silly arguments.

Was there also a council to determine the sex of the angels? And more important, are angels allowed to have sex?
    What do you think?

  23. Mohammed says:

I don’t know about this regarding the angels. According to Islam though the Angels are created from pure light and don’t have a sex (ie. Neither Male or Female) and they don’t have sex, eat sleep and have bodily functions like humans. The don’t even have the ability to make there own choice as humans do. They only do what God tells them to do. Whether Christians belive angels have a sex and can have sex is beyond me although I have never heard of this before.

  24. Suryo Perkoso says:

I’m rather inclined to follow Lairedion in all of this.

I wonder what the view is on Hinduism and all of it’s 330 million Gods? One could argue that at least they have hedged their bets well.

  25. Mr Tic Tac Toe says:

Now in the 21st century they’re still fighting each other and dragging the whole world in their silly arguments.

Excuse me, Mr Lai. But we still need to know the proper way to crack the eggs. 🙂

  26. Lairedion says:

Do we need to know, triple T?

  27. Mr Tic Tac Toe says:

Do we need to know, triple T?

The whole existence of liliputians and blefuscudians depends on it. Those poor little people…

  28. Endo Hanafi says:

    Koran will reveal its fallacy

    @Mohammed,

That was exactly I did. Didnt want to listen to others, and learnt Islam from proper source which are Koran and hadits. Is there any a \”more proper\” source than these? I fed up with contradictions and multiple intrepretations from others. Why did not read and learn it by myself?

Koran and hadist project God as a cruel, blood thirst, sick creature. And Mohamed is not more than a power-thirst individual who exploit the fear of ignorants for his benefits. As moslem by birth, I was indeed an ignorant before until I extensively read Koran and Hadits and finally saw the light.

It sounds ironic, to see the lies and non-sense fictitous stories of islamic concept, you do not need other sources but Koran and hadits. Read and learn Koran/hadits, then they will reveal the islam\’s fallacy.

Again, for Tenggerians or others who think of converting to Islam, give yourselves sometime, learn Islam from its authentic source of Koran and hadits and see by yourselves what islam exattly is. Only after you learn it, then you decide. I am sure you will thank me later. Islam is a nasty trap! Avoid it.

Bravo and loud applause @ Endo
