Qory Sandioriva, Putri Indonesia

Oct 12th, 2009, in Celebrities, News, by

Wailing and gnashing of teeth in Aceh over the shameless Putri Indonesia 2009.

The winner of Miss Indonesia 2009 (Putri Indonesia), representing Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam, 18 year old Qory Sandioriva has caused a storm in the province of Aceh for her lack of head covering.

In reaction to her victory on October 10th the leader of the Himpunan Ulama Dayah Aceh (HUDA), Tgk. Faisal Aly, said:

She is not representative of Acehnese women. She has no right to act in the name of the people of Aceh, this is really bad.

Further

She can take part in Putri Indonesia, that’s her right, but not as a representative of Aceh, because she doesn’t embody the Islamic ideals and values of Aceh.

And likely as a sign of things to come, in Banda Aceh on October 11th dozens of students belonging to the Kesatuan Aksi Mahasiswa Muslim Indonesia (KAMMI) staged a demonstration against Qory and demanded that Governor Irwandi Yusuf disown her and revoke her permission to represent the province.

Qory, who will represent Indonesia at Miss Universe 2010, narrowly bested the ‘sentimental favourite’ Zukhriatul Hafizah from West Sumatra (2nd) and Isti Ayu Pratiwi from North Maluku (3rd), and was crowned by reigning Miss Universe Stefania Fernandez of Venezuela. She takes over from Zivanna Letisha Siregar.

Lookalike competition, the top 3 finalists.

She was born in Jakarta, and grew up there, with her only real connection to Aceh being her Acehnese mother. She currently studies French Literature at University of Indonesia, Depok.

Since 2003 Acehnese contestants in Putri Indonesia have worn the Islamic headscarf, in line with sharia law in the province, and as part of the competition Qory Sandrioriva was asked by presenters Charles Bonar Sirait and Dian Khrisna:

Contestants from Aceh usually wear jilbab, but not now?

Qory replied that head hair was a part of a woman’s beauty and there was no problem in showing it off. Later, after the contest, she explained that she did not normally wear jilbab, and that she had received special permission from the government of Aceh to represent the province, without wearing the scarf.

Where does she live in acheh? I mean, without hijab?

  3. diego says:

Oops sorry I jumped on trolling without reading first. So she’s actually (just) another up-town girl. Ok, another stab: does the permission from the government of aceh include flashing her skin (see pictures)?

  4. Callighan says:

    Harlot eh?
    That’s lovely!
And no, I’m not being sarcastic.

Anyhow, it’s quite common practice for uptown girls to represent areas where they’re not from in such pageants. We’ll see how the world reacts to this.
I wonder if she’ll get upper spots on the world stage.

wow, aceh now awakened on Islamic rules,,

I think Qory should live in Aceh for a long time to understand her own culture,, nevertheless she is not aceh girl but jakarta girl, yeap Jakarta.

  11. Farah says:

She should shame to claim as Aceh girl.. she raised and studying in jakarta.. just because her mom from Aceh you can’t call her an “aneuk nanggro aceh”… she might know nothing about Aceh culture and history.

Qory replied that head hair was a part of a woman’s beauty and there was no problem in showing it off. Later, after the contest, she explained that she did not normally wear jilbab, and that she had received special permission from the government of Aceh to represent the province, without wearing the scarf.

…yeah right.. try to do that (explain about jilbab) in Aceh if she dare hehehehe….

Wondering if she still BRAVE enough to show some more skin in tiny bikinies.. 🙂

  12. andre says:

  13. joe says:

Sorry…qory.

  14. sputjam says:

The ulamaks just don’t realise they are fighting a losing battle. maybe ten years from now, islam may suffer the same fate as the church of england, largely ignored by the masses.
Having an acehnese mum qualifies Qory to be acehnese and represent Aceh. But the funny thing is that it is being done without acehnese authorities consent.

  15. Lairedion says:

If dumb miss contests can cause a stir amongst fundies I’m all for it. Go for it, girl.

  16. Ross says:

Farah’s comment exemplifies the nasty side of the Islamofascists whom I hope their Governor ignores.
    She’s a girl, for God’s sake!
Why should she have to be afraid to behave like a normal one just because most of the women up there are forced to behave abnormally.
God gave girls nicer hair than He gave guys. They should be proud of that.

  17. diego says:

    Hi Farah,

Have you looked up in the dictionary the word “mysoginist”?

  18. eq says:

Jk nafas Islam begitu mudah dilecehkan saya khawatir kemarahan Allah akan ditimpakan di Aceh lg. Hebat sekali nilai agama bs dianulir oleh hanya seorang gubernur. Tau gak hai Qori yg membuat anda menang itu krn kontroversi yg anda ciptakan. Astaghfirullah banyak org yg penasaran sejauh mana norma Islam berani anda langgar dg atas nama ACEH.

  19. David says:

I presume she won the Miss Aceh competition with a headscarf?

I don’t think there is a Miss Aceh competition, or at least not in Aceh…how the representative for there gets chosen though beats me.

But the funny thing is that it is being done without acehnese authorities consent.

Well she says she met the governor of Aceh in Jakarta not long ago and got his blessing…

Lairedion, here is Miss Sulawesi Utara for you, she looks like a swell girl….

  20. ngurah koriawan says:

    Farah tell the true
Qory might know nothing about Aceh culture and history. She should shame to represent Aceh.

When West talking about their right, they called human right.
When Acehnese/islamist talking about their right, they called extremist, Islamofascists, etc

Wearing jilbab for moslem is human right as much as human right to wear bikini for those who want to wear it.

Islam and jilbab has passed many years of challenges. and still survive, and will survive till the end of the world, as promised by The Almighty

Democracy for Aceh means the government of the Aceh people, by the Aceh people, for the Aceh people.

Why always ridicule Aceh people when they are merely doing Demokrasi.

    Yang penting damai, habis cerita.

  21. Lairedion says:

Thanks P., do you have a picture of Miss Jawa Barat?

  22. Putra Aceh says:

  23. muslimah says:

We all know that she won it just because the controversy. Congrats for all party-who-hate-Islam of your great effort to weaken us. But we Muslim believe you will not win 😛 That’s Allah’s promise!

    Stupid contest anyway 😛

  24. Farah says:

    @ Diego
    From wikipedia:
Misogyny (pronounced /m??s?d??ni/) is hatred (or contempt) of women or girls. Misogyny comes from Greek misogunia (?????????) from misos (?????, “hatred”) and gyn? (????, “woman”). It is parallel to misandry—the hatred of men or boys. Misogyny is also comparable with (but not the same as) misanthropy which is the hatred of humanity in general. The prefix miso-, meaning ‘Hatred’ or ‘To hate’ applies in many other words, such as misandry, misocapny, misogomy, misarchy and misoxeny.

Also funny thing i read there:
Traditional feminist theorists propose many different forms of misogyny. In its most overt expression, a misogynist will openly hate all women simply because they are female.

Other forms of misogyny may be less overt. Some misogynists may simply be prejudiced against all women, or may hate women who do not fall into one or more acceptable categories. Subscribers to one model, the mother/whore dichotomy, hold that women can only be “mothers” or “whores.” Another variant is the virgin/whore dichotomy, in which women who do not adhere to a saintly standard of moral purity (Abrahamic) are considered “whores”.[citation needed]

Frequently, the term misogynist is used in a looser sense as a term of derision to describe anyone who holds an unpopular or distasteful view about women as a group. A man who considers himself “a great lover of women,” therefore, might somewhat paradoxically be termed a misogynist by those who consider this treatment of women to be sexist. Archetypes of this type of man might be Giacomo Casanova and Don Juan, who were both reputed for their many libertine affairs with women.

Misogyny is a negative attitude towards women as a group, and so need not fully determine a misogynist’s attitude towards each individual woman. The fact that someone holds misogynist views may not prevent him or her from having positive relationships with some women.

Conversely, simply having negative relationships with some women does not necessarily mean someone holds misogynistic views. The term, like most negative descriptions of attitudes, is used as an epithet and applied to a wide variety of behaviors and attitudes.

Basically you want to say i am a women hatred because i made a negative comment on someone who seemed didn’t respect her own culture which based on Islam rules?

So many woman hatred then if you read news about her:
here and here or maybe here.

Nope, i am not hate her (or envy.. hahaha). Feel sorry for her because only for like 3 week of fame (maybe less) people will remember her maybe just similar to another beauty queen who short of said INDONESIA IS A CITY (which is very silly).

    to all:

(thats why qory will shame all acehnese)

  26. Rob says:

I did not have the opportunity to watch the broadcast (and I am not sure that I would have even if I did), but could this be a political choice? Or was she a clear winner in all of the required categories?

Perhaps, seeing the contest involves a swimwear component, the contestant representing Aceh should opt to wear a burqini…

  27. Lairedion says:

Thanks P. but I’m not too impressed. Probably the model/pageant type girls are not my thing.

In general, I believe the Aceh MP’s are the ones who brought shame to Aceh, as addressed earlier by Ross over here.

  28. Ross says:

Just got home after a pleasant (and quite sober!) night out to see the midnight news, which made me want to go out and get drunk!
All these pathetic fanatics in Aceh are up in arms about a pretty girl who prefers to look pretty rather than emulate the drabs who are now demonstrating against her, yet are they going to protest about the release of that sleazy pedophile Puji?
Just when some fine Javanese villagers are showing principle and some guts by refusing to let terrorist scum be buried in their little kampungs, we get to see another kamoung’s mob of ignorant savages welcoming this pervert’s deliverance from justice.
    I despair!

That is the problem, that is the sin: the garbages in the brain (brain? 🙂 ) of some men.
Oh, my god, some of your sisters and brothers in Sumbar are suffering and the most important for some of you is if this woman is a shame for Aceh or not. Poor Indonesia!!!
