What is Racism?

Sep 22nd, 2008, in Asides, by

I am getting tired of discussions constantly drifting into the areas we see below, cut from the effeminate men post.

I titled this post “What is Racism?” because, hmm, some stereotypes about different peoples are actually true, and in scientific terms a stereotype must be true, or else it isn’t a stereotype…But I don’t know if there is some formula that determines at what point the exceptions to the rule become so numerous that the stereotype breaks down and has to be abandoned.

I generally don’t like accusations of “racist” and “racism” being thrown around, they are substitutes for thought and argument, or they attempt to stop thought and argument, but I don’t think I’m alone in getting weary at some people constantly carping about Chinese or Anglos, or whoever…

This is the original bit by Purba Negoro which sparked the following off:

Indosiar is also Chinese owned. UNsurpisingly its’ content is facile, derivative, cheap and trite- outirght plagiarisms of better Western models and the lowest possible investment for highest possible profit-wan, aiya- exemplify fondly held Chinese values- the love of tinsel and trinkets.

Metro TV is owned by Pak Paulo. The quality of the station is far superior than profit-at-any-cost typical Chinese penny-dreadfuls. Just like their Tempo and Jakarta Post- self-serving or self-aggrandising pulp fictions.

    Janma- your ignorance yet again.
What is your text- something from Jakarta Post Group or Gramedia?

I never read Jakarta Post because I can’t work out who all the government departments are in English…. so I read Kompass…. I don’t see what’s wrong with Grammedia, but you’ll be happy to know I have an extensive library at home and I can say with surety that almost all you say in the following post is at best made up and at worst woeful ignorance.

Chinese contributions to Indonesia is nil and null-

“Kecapi- it is a siter Janma. From Java- derived directly from From India, name intact- altered into Sundanese.”

Sigh…. so so full of it! How is the name intact!??? Kecapi – Sitar…. yeah, totally the same! Besides the name, a sitar is an upright plucking instrument with a gourd attached for resonance…. a kecapi is played horizontally and is closely related to the chinese zither called zheng. it has no gourd and operates in a different way.

“Bronze-work originates from Sumer- modern India. The earliest artifacts yet FOUND are Dong Son period of from Vietnam- pre dtaing Chiense presence in Vietnam.”

Sumer- modern india!??? are you drinking?

In the Dong Son period there was no such thing as china as a nation! The Dong Son culture is linked to the Tibeto-Burman culture, the Dai culture in Yunnan (if I’m not mistaken, now a province in China!?) and Laos, the Mon-Khmer cultures and the culture associated with the Plain of Jars in Laos.

What of these other remarkable Chinese inventions?
    noodles-
Romans invented noodles CONCURRENTLY- the story about Marco Polo was made up by an American spaghetti company brochure.
Ruins exist of Roman spaghetti houses all around Italy.”

Maybe so, but actually not true…. it’s true that the Italians have eaten pasta for a long time, but in the form of dumplings or gnocchi…. not long noodles, the idea came on the trade route from China, which doesn’t prove anything and doesn’t mean Chinese are superior, it’s just one of those cultural exchanges that happen over time, it’s impossible to have a collision of two cultures and not to have any exchange of technology, culture and idea’s.

“Gunpowder? English- Roger Bacon. Militarised by the English into hand gonnes and serpentines. Arrived in Indonesia via Arabs and Ottomans.”

Gunpowder was discovered in China in the 9th century by taoist monks!

“Tofu- you’ll find it too is Indian- as is veganism.”

Udah goblok, belagu lagi! Unbelievable! Tofu from india! you are thinking of paneer, it’s made from milk…. vegans are rare in india, the reason the venerate the cow so is because they live from milk and it’s products! Soybean products are rare in india… namanya aja udah tofu….. gimana sih!?

Janma – you should come out swinging like this more often. It’s not that I don’t very much appreciate your more whimsical usual contributions, but when you lock, load and engage like this you are formidable (and I liked you rebuff to Andy on the subject of “Australians aren’t ever racist or yobbish” too). Respect, lady, respect…

Anggap aja lagi orangnya lagi mengigau, syukur-syukur nggak ngiler.. LOL

Bagaimanapun juga kebudayaan itu universal, saling mempengaruhi, hanya orang yang cerdas, dan berwawasan luas saja yang bisa memahami dan menerima hal itu dengan jiwa besar…

Nggak usah jauh-jauh… tanyain aja beliau, waktu kecil beliau suka main mercon, nggak?

    So…

So when a certain industry fail due to faltering economy, Marie Pangetsu also gets the blame. Please don’t cry in the face of competition. If you cannot come up with comething competitive then you are not worth the sh*t let alone the Pretender say you Javanese CEO, CFO, FOS type of sh*t. Do you think the quality of Batik in Indonesia is of the most superior quality? Go ask people like the chinese convert Hj Lukminto of Solo.

The concept of a fair competition is only adopted by dumb goverment because most goverments in the racist country such Japan, USA and British priotize protection of their own farmer and labor above the fair competition, as you can see Japanese rice farmer will be gone if Japan open their domestic market to the rice import and USA and British farmer will also be gone without heavy subsidy from their own government.

Frankly, I do not know about Batik quality because I am not batik lover but I do know that 200 billions/ year could create thousand Job for million jobless of our countrymen but in other hand our beloved Chinese minister said that Batik China Import is good for us….oh my Gun…

Koh Dragon..btw I have not yet withdraw my offer to you to share glory…..just allow your daughter to become my forth wives and you can retire from this forum while you still enjoy the glory because I will tell to anyone in this forum that my genius because you are my Suhu

  7. dragonwall says:

Kretek and Batik usually employs the who town like Maspion and you said

When China open herself to the world, she also opened up the competition and finally from much foreign investment, at their lower that HKD exchange, they successfully acquire foreign technology to start their own, then gave the world a run for their money.

So it all depends on whether Indonesia wants to acquire more technology or drift backwards. Doubted your so call knowledge in the oil industry. Didn’t Pertamina acquire the knowledge for Indonesian workers for Pertamina to make demands after acquiring them?

    And

just allow your daughter to become my forth wives and you can retire

Hmm..you are beginning to behave like AAB, are you worthy? with you pea brain knowledge in oil drilling? No wonder you were always in the forefront of preaching Islam…. And no wonder this characters like Anton Medan and Hj Lukminto converted into a Muslim…

COVER UP ALL BY PRETENDING TO BE RELIGIOUS, NICE GUISE..

  9. foolosophy says:

Can anyone name a country that does not practice racism at all?

  10. dragonwall says:

    NONE.. NOT A SINGLE ONE

  11. foolosophy says:

There you go, people. I can’t think any, too.

The country that declares itself as a “multi-cultural nation” IS practicing racism (that’s Aussies in case you don’t know). If not to the Asians and Africans, it’s very obvious they are very racist to the Aborigines. Just an example, in every government forms, they would ask whether you’re indigenous Aborigines. Check it out for yourselves.

  12. Rob says:

    Foolosophy…

Can we distinguish between countries who practice racism and racist individuals that live in the countries.

With regards to Australia practicing racism will depend on how you characterize the questions that ask Torres Strait Islanders and Aboriginals (indigenous Australians). Is this a case of affirmative action? Where additional benefits are provided if one so chooses to identify as either a TSI or as indigenous.

Some might argue that affirmative action and “additional” benefits for being a minority or in some other way disadvantaged is racism as it conceivably prevents better qualified candidates from gaining a position because there is a quota in place. Kind of like quotas on there having to be 30% women as candidates for parliamentary elections, for example. Why only 30% when women make up at least half the population, if not more in some places?

Back on topic. I wonder whether mono-cultural nations are a possibility. I am sure that there are those that would want this. The question is whether they are the minority or the majority. In any event, how would you propose returning a “multi-cultural” nation back to a mono-cultural position? How are you going to wind back the clock? Are we going to close off our borders to all visitors and potential migrants? Are we going to prevent foreign students from taking up scholarships in our education facilities?

But to each their own. If you have an axe to grind with Australia then go for it! You are not the first on IM to do so and you won’t be the last. It is fine to complain and to whinge if that is what takes your fancy. I suppose what matters is whether you are part of the problem or part of the solution.

Whatever they are, whoever they are, every country is the same. No matter how much a president from any country made their promise they will end up with the same where they start.

    No resolution, no answer…Worst …

I’m not in the place to answer the purpose of those questions about indigenousness 🙂
And I don’t think I want to complain about any of Aussies’ actions towards indigenous Australians. I’m just making a point of racism on how we should describe a nation with racism. Aussie is just a fine example since it declares itself as a “multi-cultural nation.”

We do not need to sacrifice our labor under horrendous coal mine accident and we do not need to feed our kid with melamine milk and for sure the China Way is too hard to be followed by most of us because majority of us is not an economical animal like chinese but we are only a simple religius human with very simple dream and as long as we have a job that enable us to provide the food on the table for our family, it is more than enough.

you said it, and therein lies the problem!

Achmad and Timdog, usually I am whimsical because I have enough serious stuff in my life to deal with and real issues to sort without getting too deep into it online… sometimes, however there are some people and some posts that just beg an answer…. they are just wrong… and usually they are the people and the posts that everyone says to leave be, don’t feed the troll etc…. but (depending on my mood) sometimes I just can’t let it be, even if it’s only so their errornous opinions won’t be the last word on the subject for everyone else. But mostly it’s just an itch, like when a strange man touches you on the street and you miss your chance to kick him in the balls…. it just weighs on you later….

AAB, you call me an uncultured English byproduct, but it is you that is lacking the class and perhaps lacking the culture. It seems that your arguments cannot be made without trying to slander the opposition. You are the blog form of a schoolyard bully. When you do not get your way you revert to name calling and then if you lose on that front you threaten violence. Nah, you will have to do a little bit better than that son.

Yeah and you can add that up to the list if they are found guilty, why tell me?

You mean 60,000 rupiah? Right perhaps because it is a guzzler, waste to much of Pertamina’s product.

Basically I would say these blogs are for people who express what they want to hear and understand and I suppose like putdowns and insults, balls kicking, bringing in big guns.

And so much for people trying understand economic, waste of time.

Do you know what that represent?

And one thing, to top the chart one needs to just write a sentence. No doubt.. It doen’t need to make sense.

Despite your bragging about your remarkable acumen in business matters and debate prowness, didn’t you mentioned in an earlier posting you read and perceive things literally. (Purba Negoro proved a point that Chinese don’t think laterally, but that is another issue).

Tell me, what do you do with a person who can’t not think beyond a box?

Ps. My 1st job was at a Chinese restaurant at 16 years of age for 3 weeks. None of the other kitchen workers’ wages was tax declared because the Chinese owner want to save some dime.

  27. Cukurungan says:

you said it, and therein lies the problem!

Bu Janma if what we need for our life is just water from beneath where we stay and we eat the rice grow from our land so where does lies the problem. The most common proplem with the white people is they want to enjoy warm local culture and the way of life but they still demand the effient service like they got in the west.

What has the coal mine incident got to do with Indonesia’s economic and Racism and what the Milk incident represent is purely criminal so how does that relate to your bread and butter or your religius endeavor?

Koh dragon ..Of course the coal mine accident is nothing to do with Indonesia economic but China Economic will be in big suffering without cheap energy produced by thousand labors who died on yearly terrible coal mine accident in China

My point is China Economic Achievement is not quite impressing because it produce too much pain to their ordinary people …China Gov. take and do anything require to achieve their economic target include controlling the way people life…. You should thank to Indonesia Government because they allowed you to breed yourself as many as you want….koh dragon imagine if you life in china and you have only a kid then suddenly your kid is dead because of melamine milk…

The fact that CHINA MAN surely do not want to live and not appealing to stay in Indon. You called yourself a businessman acquiring your business from your father? He must have made a bad choice when you say

Missing the target by 4 years is a serious blunder for a professional analyst. Despite your bragging about your remarkable acumen in business matters and debate prowness

Hmm.. this definitely shows that you are not even a businessman after all, let alone being successful. You can’t even for once think for yourself except to copy and paste of like someone likes to say it’s of putdowns and insults, and lickspittle one another, hey buddy you buddy me kind of person.
No one in this world is able to make forecast and analyze the economic situation right to the dot whether in time of turmoil or peace, not even weather.
When it happens beyond the forecast then it represents the economic were growing at a slower than usual pace or some form of rescue attempt was made to prolong the situation from collapsing earlier.

But when that happens earlier than forecast, it represents 2 things.
    1. Either the economy is real bad and nothing done could salvage the situation thus the
    sudden collapse.
    2. And or during the country’s crisis, she face some kind of interception by other
person/country/institution with the pro and con being
    a. Incapable, inefficient, or insufficient in their interception effort in their rescue.
    b. Being attacked by foreign currencies.

Does that resembles the case of Indonesia? Fanny Mae and Freddy Mac intercepting and yet the collapse was one after another. When BI and interest rate cuts failed to help the economy recover and slowly and steady it is drifting backward. Same thing in the US when the housing loan collapse, it was followed by the banking collapse amidst attack on futures buying of oil that send price rocketing and USD sliding downward.

It only recovers amidst news that they are resorting to new form of energy etc.etc…

And for your comments it shows the grosss complacency of a gullible business person like what you claimed. I would consider that both of you who made such remarks had clearly demonstrate what I suppose you guys know better right!

China Economic will be in big suffering without cheap energy produced by thousand labors who died on yearly terrible coal mine accident in China

And accident is an accident, whether China or India is going to have a big flood it needs no prediction. If they did not mend their waterways and others, they will still meet the same situation. A 5 year old kid will tell you it will. Indonesia is also the same.

The person expressed the lowest self esteem as only thinking of the very basic human being survival skill , that is the ability to breed likewise the animals. It should come from a person who overly self indulgence out of his genital (s) – I put ’s’ maybe he has double ‘legs’ in between his legs.

Your were right at this, a person without one to be precise.

I pity Indonesian if most of you think this way

That is the way they want to say and hear what they like.
