What is Racism?

Sep 22nd, 2008, in Asides, by

I am getting tired of discussions constantly drifting into the areas we see below, cut from the effeminate men post.

I titled this post “What is Racism?” because, hmm, some stereotypes about different peoples are actually true, and in scientific terms a stereotype must be true, or else it isn’t a stereotype…But I don’t know if there is some formula that determines at what point the exceptions to the rule become so numerous that the stereotype breaks down and has to be abandoned.

I generally don’t like accusations of “racist” and “racism” being thrown around, they are substitutes for thought and argument, or they attempt to stop thought and argument, but I don’t think I’m alone in getting weary at some people constantly carping about Chinese or Anglos, or whoever…

This is the original bit by Purba Negoro which sparked the following off:

Indosiar is also Chinese owned. UNsurpisingly its’ content is facile, derivative, cheap and trite- outirght plagiarisms of better Western models and the lowest possible investment for highest possible profit-wan, aiya- exemplify fondly held Chinese values- the love of tinsel and trinkets.

Metro TV is owned by Pak Paulo. The quality of the station is far superior than profit-at-any-cost typical Chinese penny-dreadfuls. Just like their Tempo and Jakarta Post- self-serving or self-aggrandising pulp fictions.

I do wonder though why virtually nobody here uses his or her full name.

Because it expands the possibilities. Soime even post under different names. Split personalities and so… 😉 Even PN gave it a try when he called himself Pembela Rakyat.

While you are here Simplyjozz, i’m curious as to what your opinion is on the issues at hand. Where do you stand on the issues of Chinese citizens, Papua and Timor Leste and the previous occupation? Don’t be afraid, i’ll appreciate if you are honest really….and we don’t know who you really are so it doesn’t matter what you say.

Andy, I have Chinese blood, but even my father can’t speak Chinese. I am just trying not to take sides, although i personally think that PN doesn’t know his boundaries anymore. I agree with exesivedre’s comments, I think they are valid questions to be asked.

Well, I don’t know about that. You don’t have to follow his internet trail very far to see that he has been banned from at least two sites: one a blog for the peaceful students of primates where he became excessively abusive because somebody had dared to use the term Borneo instead of Kalimantan and the other one militaryphotos.net for god knows what offence.

I am now myself inclined to think that he is not Indonesian. He is laying it on a bit too thick, like some gauche actor in an amateur theater group.

    P,

With my mixed background I could have been a successful sinetron actor 🙂 .

Ethnically and culturally I feel comfortable at both sides however my brown skin and slightly Asian facial features and stature and the fact that Mrs. L. is “WNI” drive me more towards the Indonesian side.

My only true reference is my passport and it’s not a green one anymore so I have no problems whatsoever with my name not being in bold.

As for PN I gotta admit he had his finest hour when he had Andy call a Melbourne hotel to see if a certain Purba Negoro really checked in. I think Andy secretly loves the dude as he’s still not convinced he’s not Indonesian.

Honestly, IMO PN at least offered some intelligent opinions and tried to back up what he said even if he was a bit of a shitstirrer.

Is it any different from shitfanner?

    It’s all visualization and image..
It’s easy to point at the Chinese and blame them for “arrogance, exploitation, deceit, etc”.
Fact is, it has nothing much to do with one’s race, more of one’s status,
gap between the rich and poor, the difference in religion..

This is worsen by the bias attitude of the Indonesian media.
The media never fail to include Chinese name on top of the Indonesian name in a criminal reporting that involves Chinese..

It’s pathetic because what is wrong in Indonesia is the system itself.
Chinese Indonesians are not the only ones who exploit, deceit, corrupt, etc..
We all know native Indonesian themselves (public servants, high ranking officials) corrupt and exploit the people on a daily basis. Not to mention how many lives they have claimed, the injustice to their own people in Aceh, East Timor, Papua, you name it..

As long as the system remains this way, the corruption and exploitation will continue by any race.. natives, Chinese, other foreigners.. People generally behave by the system that runs them.

I say fix the system and eradicate poverty, the racism issue will fix itself..
