Indonesia can’t get enough of the news that Barack Obama has won the US election.
Some of the reactions to Barack Hussein Obama’s election to the US presidency:
Screaming Children
250 students at Obama’s former school (SDN 01 Menteng) in Jakarta, shouted with glee:
Obama wins! McCain loses!
while watching television coverage of the results. Here they are:
11 year old sixth-grader Farhan Ashardi was filled with hope to one day be president of Indonesia:
If Obama can do it so can I
Warung Landslide
At a “warung election” in Makassar, South Sulawesi Obama won 41 out of 45 votes cast, with two votes for McCain, and two invalid. The “election” was staged by the Komunitas Warung Kopi Untuk Demokrasi. republika
Minorities
Vice president Jusuf Kalla said Obama’s win pointed the way to a minority person, perhaps such as a non-Javanese like himself, one day becoming president of Indonesia. antara
Youth
Maverick politician Yuddy Chrisnandi said a new wind would blow to Indonesia from America as a result of the Obamanator’s victory, with the message that young leaders were needed, perhaps even including himself. okezone
In the Backwoods
In the East Java governor’s election Obama was spotted:

Colin Powell, Excellend Presence but seriously compromised by his flip flopping in the previous administration.. From my reading he no longer engenders a lot of trust from the reds or the blues..
Ok i confess..I have the hots for Condi…
Colin Powell, Excellend Presence but seriously compromised by his flip flopping in the previous administration.. From my reading he no longer engenders a lot of trust from the reds or the blues..
I got the feeling his heart was never in it after halfway. In the end he was set up as a very effective fallguy for the whole WMD mess. Bush managed to get away unscathed and Rumsfeld at least had his decline postponed as both essentially crafted a media image of ‘well it was Colin who presented everything in the UN, not us.’ Shame.
From the perspective of melding campaign characters though, you couldn’t do any better: Black AND a war hero. Its the best of both symbols in one person!
@timdog: I think I raed somewhere that Obama claims he still speaks ‘passable’ Indonesian.
Obama won. So what?
What does it has to do with Indonesia?
People say that anyone other than dubya is better. I do hope Obama is the right man for the job and will make some (good) changes to the US and hopefully the changes will also have good impact to the rest of the world. However, I read this piece about him titled “The making of a Fuehrer”http://www.faithfreedom.org/obama.html (be sure to watch the videos of his lies as well, read the article and you’ll know where to find the videos).
If this is true, well, I can’t really say anything but I can feel chills down my spine as we speak.
Well Rima, in that case, like I said, wouldn’t it be just fabulous if he one day makes a speech in Indonesian if he ever actually makes it to Jakarta on some Asian tour…
But as for your link, oh my goodness me, that was genuinely hilarious (I wouldn’t have found it quite so hilarious if I’d been reading it on Monday, but now I’m free to roll back in my chair and roar with laughter – actually, what I find most gratifying about Obama’s winning is the thought of how very upset how many obnoxious people must be at the moment – hey! why shouldn’t liberals be allowed a bit of petty vindictiveness now and again?).
Basically, for anyone to become a major, succesful politician, a certain degree of egomania is required, perhaps even a dash of psychopathy or sociopathy, but as I said, that link was just hilarious!
Funny-
amusing.
You obviously find your own stupidity and ignorance , and perhaps your factory output quanta of smegma the source of your mirth.
Pity you’re too ignorant to know the whole truth behind the story and instead permanently, addled by that gin you’re using to keep your Thai boy butt-sex derived syphilis in check.
Kalimantan has uranium genius. Fissile uranium 235 and other suitable for at least two thousand warheads.
We also use laser to split thorium into fissile material.
We have 3 operation nuclear reactors- the largest is 30 MW.
We will have by 2012 the largest., most sophisticated nuclear reactor in the region- courtesy of Russia.
All majority Javanese built and staffed.
By 2020 Indonesia will be the 5th largest economy.
The US, Russia, Germany and Japan all know this- hence being very close trading partners.
The UK (no 5 economy) and Australia (no 16) will be obsolete quaint relics of halcyon days long passed, overtaken by Germany-France (4) and Russia (3).
Congratulations to the new US President Barack Obama. He made a big mark in the history of America. The whole world is now hoping for the new things that he will make happen. Cheers to all American people for having such a peaceful election. 🙂
For those who say Indonesia not going anywhere, I support. Let that be the lesson for us Indonesian to not have whitey “mental penjajah” as a mentor. nothing good we can received from them instead we became their everlasting slave. We should grow brave to say “GO TO HELL WITH YOU BULES” and start heading toward heaven with our own feet.
For a start lets throw our smiling face and put a scowl one upon them.
Now it is Black, next Asian, then Islam shall spread amongst American. Bule’s !!!, be prepared for your own demise.
@timdog:
We will see what kind of president he is.
The link is quite entertaining and faithfreedom is a site I visit from time to time, but like i said, if it’s true then it’s won’t be something to laugh about anymore.
But yeah, I also would like to see the day he visits Indonesia and speak in some Indonesian. That would be cool.
@ rima fauzi
Iranians sick culture had no respect for their womenfolk unlike us. That was why radical Islam was able to take hold. Now they worship Bules the like of Bush and McCain, we don’t worship anyone. There is no comparing them with us. What was said in FFI about islam is true, but it doesn’t apply in Indonesia.
Not sure if anyone had mention this before here, but when it comes to President Obama, i think it’ll be hard to see how he could meet the high expectation of the American people, the world, and particularly, Indonesian.
Go thru his senate record – he sat on the committee on foreign relations, etc. where a few votes on Indonesia was presented during his years. He NEVER voted in favor for Indonesia (trade relations, military assistance, foreign aid, etc.)
Looking at the voting record, he doesn’t look like a good thing for Indonesia. But then again, now he’s president, maybe he does other things. chances are, he’ll be busy with Wall Street, and Baghdad, and Afghanistan before Indonesia even pops up on the radar.
not sure why ppl care so much… the bloke was in Menteng once, so? If it’s any indication at all, leaders from Menteng are generally known more for being extraordinary thieves and liars rather than exemplary leadership.
Still, at least it’s no more Bush…
PN-By 2020 Indonesia will be the 5th largest economy.
Well with the fourth largest population (maybe third by that time) they should be. Wonder how long it will be before they can match it with the west on per capita GDP. That is the true measure of a country’s strength. I mean Luxembourg can never be the world’s largest economy but it is surely a great place to live according to all social indicators. Before Suharto (and family and cronies) messed everything up with his greed and corruption Indonesia were well on the way to being a great economy. But alas, the rakyat were still living in shit while the middle class were licking the cream off the economic cake. China and India are the same. Unless the wealth can flow to all it’s people it is meaningless.
Aluang Anak Bayang Says:
Don’t be jealous. Any successful, strong and charismastic person has Javanese connection. Though his stay in Indonesia was short, his biggest influence is his Javanese step-dad who being a Kejawen moslem (one who party hard, occasionally drink, and love pork dishes) must have equipped him with enough Javanese wisdom to lead the world.
LOL – jealous?
It goes without saying that your statement re. Javanese connection is hyperbolic, but to be honest I do admire the Javanese civilization – it’s among the finest. Too bad in the last century (and certainly in the past 2 decades) it’s been smeared by foreign influence; most Javanese nowadays have no identity. They think it’s cooler to dress like the Arabs; most think being Muslim also means giving up their heritage. It’s a pity that more foreigners master the intricacies of the language and culture than the Javanese themselves. Nothing wrong with the religion – what’s VERY wrong is the mentality of the people.
Very good point Andrew.. And no guys we are not related in any way except that we are both extremely astute judges of the human condition.

Wow, I must have spent too long in the mountain.
Not long ago I heard we would have the capability of designing and building our own airplanes in a few years – whatever happened to that “plan”? Did we flip-flop and decided to go nuclear instead?
I bet we’ll beat China and India to the moon!
@igun
Whoaaa chill out dood.
There are tons we can learn from America (if that’s what you’re refering to, and I’m not gonna say that B word because I hate when people call me akew too. It’s offensive.).
See, I do agree. They take advantage of us. But who’s to blame if it’s not our gov? Those people in the government needs to keep their act together. If they did not compromise, it wouldn’t be this worse. It’s the mentality of our gov that needs to change. You can seclude yourself or not let the US step their feet on our country, but that’s just plain stupid.
Man how come we are so provoked-friendly..
Purbo Negoro,
Chinese are an imported colonial parasite who comprise less than 3% of the population moron
These 3% of imported colonial parasite probably drive most of country’s economy. Perhaps, there are a thing or two that you can learn from them?
Chinese as well as most Protestants (aside from Batak and some others were vile Colonial collaborators)- and have not yet earned the right to participate in the Republic which they fought so hard to destroy.
Do you know any Chinese/Protestant who tries to destroy this country? I heard from the media that are some people who are not Chinese nor Protestants who tried to destroy this country, quite literally. Maybe what this country need is a complete overhaul of mindset and mentality. We could start with yours.
I think there is nothing wrong with Indonesians taking pride that the present leader of the free world were once exposed to Indonesia and its cultures at one point in his life. After all, unlike most American kids living in Jakarta today, Obama went to Indonesian schools, had Indonesian friends, and had an Indonesian step dad & sister. And unlike most US presidents before him who never set foot outside the US until adulthood, (who I imagine didn’t have many friends of other race and cultures during their youth), he had been exposed to multi-cultures since young age which makes him such an appealing candidate to the world. He is the United Colors of Obama. Everyone could relate to him, because he is white, black, rich, poor, underprivilaged, educated. Though some Indonesians today may have some unrealistic expectations of Obama (like the rest of the world), I think when they speak of the Obama link to Indonesia is merely for the simple reason of Indonesian pride, like the very seldom time we win the Olympics or something. We’ve been getting such bad rep with the rest of the world and we just turned into a nation so hungry for some kind of world validation or acknowledgement, that we’re taking anything we can get.
But I could also understand what the bules in this post are saying because my people could sometimes be on the defensive side, sound ignorant and just down right moronic. We are a culture who have been oppressed by the system for so long, we have these anger & ignorant point of views with ill feelings towards people who doesn’t have the same view as we do. It’s one of those bad culture we need to learn to rid of.
I’d like to think that I’m the glass-is-half-full type person. The only thing I see is Obama made history. A century ago his people were being bought and sold like animals. 40 years ago not allowed to enter whites-only bathrooms. Today he is the leader of the free world. I can’t imagine anything more beautiful than that.
For those who say Indonesia not going anywhere, I support. Let that be the lesson for us Indonesian to not have whitey “mental penjajah” as a mentor. nothing good we can received from them instead we became their everlasting slave.
What a BS.
You wrote “…we became their everlasting slave…”, but you are (unconsciously) implying that “WE ARE SO STUPID that we become their everlasting slave”.
Why curse at them if it’s OUR fault? buruk muka cermin dibelah?
“GO TO HELL WITH YOU BULES”
Hey Igun..Strongly held views indeed..although may I suggest you get a mentor with your protest sign writing otherwise people will only laugh at you. They will probably laugh anyway but no point making it too easy.
P.S. You may need to consider an alternative scapegoat should you be successful otherwise if means takes responsibility for your own plight and that can be so much tougher than blaming someone else.
GO TO HELL WITH YOU BULES
Ah who said Indonesians aren’t racist….Hey guess what, those hard core bule haters seem to think the US election was some kind of revolution and the blacks overthrew the whites and all whites are disappointed. Not true. Over 56 % of whites voted for Obama. Also while we’re at it the majority of bules throughout the world are against the War in Iraq. Seems the stereotype bule that exists in the minds of Indonesians is a minority amongst our people. This is why they have to dig deep into history and talk about the White Australia policy and the civil rights marches etc. Two events which happened before I was born. Policies like these are practiced by Indonesians to this day and will never change I think in my lifetime.
Example, what is the percentage of Indonesians who opposed the invasion of Timor and Papua and how many seriously would elect a minority to the Presidency? I guess we can see who the true racists in the world are, can’t we.
PN-
oooooh sex-insult. now at least we know what you are thinking most of the time.
wow from your talks, i am sure that you have a crystal ball that can see future events. i have to apologize. u didn’t get all your data from wiki, u got it from your crystal ball!!! that makes much more sense!!!
a nuclear reactor? 30 MW?? Dammit it’s like planting a nuclear bomb here and giving a little kid the trigger while telling him,”please don’t touch the button. here have some candy” and leave. we gonna have a meltdown in our faces. hey, at least we go down in history as the first country that is stupid enough to be destroyed by its own people, literally. we can’t even take care of lapindo mud (it’s damn mud. MUD. M-U-D. LUMPUR.) and now we are talking nukes. gotta move my bench a bit farther.
am i talking about kalimantan? have we lost kalimantan to independence or other countries? or are u seriously thinking we GONNA lose it? seems that way coz i was talking about things we lost. just because we still have kalimantan, it’s okay to lose timor (if only the govt takes better care of them, we wouldn’t have lose it)? it’s called rationalization fool. go to your crystal ball and check that word. damn, worse than i thought.
and yes, don’t blame anyone or other countries. it’s not their fault that the government (why can’t we elect someone who is good for a change? hell, i don’t mind another javanese as long as he/she can run this country) here carries a stupidity gene. if they put a gun and tell us to sign a business deal that would hurt us in the long run, than you got a case. but if we sign it willingly, it’s our stupidity that causes it. surprise2, guess who put them into office? pick same group and ideology expecting different results?
i need to retract my invitation to you PN. i think u make a dull partner to have a discussion with. the best u can come up with is prolly,”wow ice makes this drink really cold!!!!” i know u r hurting and i’m really sorry….. ok maybe not. then again u have that crystal ball. can i have that? it’d be fun looking at it while sippin gin. alone. as in not with you. shooo.
Kalla is stupid, but then so are most of my politicians. The Javanese are not an ethnic majority, therefore there are no ethnic minorities. If you wanted to compare Obama’s victory to a similar outcome in Indonesia, it would be like a dark-skinned Melanesian (Papuan) winning the presidency in the predominately Malay country.
Also, Obama just chose a staunch Jewish supporter of Israel as his chief of staff.
If you wanted to compare Obama’s victory to a similar outcome in Indonesia, it would be like a dark-skinned Melanesian (Papuan) winning the presidency in the predominately Malay country.
In some ways its more than that. It would be the equivalent probably of an outer island (Sumatra perhaps?), but still Muslim (keep in mind despite his blackness, Obama is still a Protestant Christian and thus has a cultural link with most Americans, white or black) presidential candidate with a Javanese Christian running mate scoring a victory. Joe Biden is a Catholic, which, perhaps due to the general lack of coverage on him as a whole, must have slipped under the radar of a lot of Americans. From this angle it makes it even more interesting.
My family actually likes to jokingly say that America’s love of Catholics is such that they’ve only ever elected one Catholic president – and he was shot.
Haha, now the bule’s revealing their other traits, hypocrite. Whenever something happen, they blame on indonesian, pribumi, Islam, but when told who are the real culprit, that is them, immediately they wash their hands, and sing the blame game song. ‘basi’.
Andrew, when we take our freedom from your kind, most of our warrior freedom fighter are stupid, they cant barely read nor write. That was our weakness which bules whom are smart with ‘penjajah’ mentality used to enslave us. they gave us ‘aid’ and ‘grant’, next thing we know they gave 1.300 trillion rupiah debt. Rest assure tho, today’s generation are not so stupid anymore.
I maybe stupid, they may laugh their ass off (it is what the bules do their best) to my stupidity , but I rather be a stupid person then an asshole-mental-penjajah like them. (stupid didn’t kill, but asshole-mental-penjajah do).
Heavenly-sword, get used to say that ‘bule’ word before it get banned, it is a reminder of their ignorance-perverted-patronizer-hypocrite behavior.
Sorry have to lick my own spit. stupidity did kills. But it is manslaughter anyway, not on purpose. God I hate to be stupid.
Igun..Few people would mistake stupidity for poor command of language but seriously get someone to give you a hand if you have anything of importance to say.
Actually I think Igun is probably AAB or Purba without the use of spellcheck on his computer. Same twisted insane logic. Anyway whoever you are go back to your kennel.
But I could also understand what the bules in this post are saying because my people could sometimes be on the defensive side, sound ignorant and just down right moronic.
Actaully Batak DC girl.. Outside of the usual nonsense posts from the rednecks both western, indonesian and the wannabes on both sides (consider them the annoying flies that buzz around any good food) I don’t think that is what any serious ‘bule’ (hate that word) commentator is saying. Generally just that like much of liberal press in America, there is this huge expectation from Obama that flys in the face of his party, past voting history and the reality of the power of the lobby group in the USA. This seems to be missing from a lot of the Indonesian analysis.
The reality is that like him or not, Bush and the Republican Party from purely a trade, aid, cash, arms point of view would have more of Indonesia bias that Obama ever will.
One things for sure, you can be human rights, Papua etc will get far more of an airing under the democrats than has been the case in recent years.

How about Colin Powell for president? That was always my choice. Especially when he can cut through the crap like this.
