Protecting Women From Globalization

Apr 7th, 2006, in News, by

Yoyoh Yusroh, a member of the Islamist Prosperous Justice Party, PKS, in supporting the proposed law against public indecency, says women need to be protected from globalization.

In an interview with the Jakarta Post she said the bill currently being debated in parliament would likely be passed into law by June this year.

Although she claimed that minority groups interests would be accomodated and that women would not be arbitrarily targeted by the police her most interesting comment was in response to the question Why do you support the bill?

Our society badly needs the pornography bill. Pornographic acts (on television) and publications, which have so far gone unchecked, have damaged our children’s morality, and it has to be stopped. The unchecked availability of pornography has also ruined many marriages.

We also disagree that the bill would imperil the right of women to dress as they choose. Having deliberated the bill, we would protect women from becoming victims of globalization. We would protect them from becoming victims of multinational firms that make women “markets” for their (fashion) products.

Translation is we will tell women how they can dress and how they can’t, for their own good. The globalization bug-bear is one that is going to cause a lot more attempts like this by consciously Islamic people in Indonesia to circle the wagons and “protect” people, and then extend their hold over them.

One wonders as well why there isn’t more focus on the massive amount of trafficking of young girls and women, young slips of things being sold into slavery in brothels and having their entire futures ruined. That’s a private, largely hidden matter though, the parties of Allah in parliament are clearly more interested in the public, control side of things.

  1. Do these people know what ‘gloBalization’ really mean?
    They should read more.

    yeah, right.
Let’s say all women all across the country are wearing hijab.
guess who can produce hijab cheaply with high quality?
    Indonesian companies? Think again.

There is only one way to protect people from being a victim of gloBalization.
    Be global. Be competitive.
The kind of people who are afraid of gloBalization are those who are left behind.

“protect them for globalisation” –> read “protect them from westerners”. All this stuff is primarly to prevent Indonesian women going with ‘bule’ (white guys) who ‘stole’ their women.

Does Yoyoh Yusroh think, she speaks for Indonesian women? Overbearance or dullness?

The question is: do the other women want to be protected? Do the women think, they need to be protected.

Children need to be protected, also such, which are not capable to act in law (mentally defected/disturbed, demented etc).

Many times I wonder, how many women let themselves willingly and gladly being degraded to be a part of a society with less rights.

By the way: I never heard about a marriage ruined by pornography. If, then there are much more proper causes then pornography. There are already many failed marriage before the “pornography” invade Indonesia. Or do you think the many, many failed marriage in the javanese rural areas in the last years are the result of these problem?

I have heard about many escapades in the rural areas in which I lived. Do you think this people have ever heard something about pornography or even Playboy?

And : can some one show me the proof of the statement about the damage of the morality of “our” children? Which children? What is the criteria of being morally damaged?

Naive statement, isn’t it? Half-baked, superficial and polemical. So like: I have to say something!

Where do you live? On an island in the middle of nowhere where tv can’t reach you. Nor your momma, your sisters, and your daughters. And, from the place you live can’t reach by the internet. If you say so: I have nothing to say, “Oh, my Lord, send your pity to this man. I hope all your women never get any trouble in her home and on the street. Amen.”

  5. Janma says:

women have no more need of being protected than men do from the internet. they are not stupid or morally weaker than men.

    Ade Wanto,
I live in a country in which all kind of TVs and TV programmes can reach us.
We talk about informations we get from all of the medias.
My wife and my children are surely not morally damage and don’t need any protection of any Lords or Gods (incl. yours). They have enough intelligence and feeling to differ between good and bad. What about your daughters, sisters or your mother(s)? You have to protect them? What a pity!!! (to you)
Yes, please say nothing if you live in an “island” where there is no progress.
May your God direct you to the right path. 🙂
