Church burningA violent neighbourhood dispute over a Christian theological college in East Jakarta.

The dispute over the 19 year-old Arastamar Evangelical School of Theology (Kampus Sekolah Tinggi Teologi Injil Arastamar, SETIA) in the Kampung Pulo, Pinang Ranti, Makassar, East Jakarta area flared up again with on July 25th a violent fight breaking out between local Muslim residents and Christian students of the college.

As a result of the brawl and consequent ill-feeling most of the staff and students of Setia have been evacuated and currently about 470 of them are camping out at the national parliament building, DPR/MPR, at the badminton courts at the back of the building.

Evacuation of students under police guard.

Bayu Kusuma of SETIA says the school authorities refuse to relocate the campus, that they own the land and have the proper permission to use it as theological seminary. kompas

Setia
Arastamar School of Theology.

On the other side, Risman Hadi, a representative of local people, says the school must move because residents are annoyed that student numbers keep growing year after year. There are currently 1600 enrolled students at the college. He says the issue has nothing to do with SARA, or sectarian/ethnic conflict. kompas

Sukowaluyo Mintorahardjo of SETIA agreed that religious feeling played no role and suggests that the root of the conflict lays in business interests wanting to see the school gone, so as to allow for profitable development of the land. detik

    What about the Uigurs?
    China is a repressive country.

As far as I remember, these are values taught to us in PMP books, for years and years. We learned those values and took them for granted; never questioning what, how, and why. We can blame ourselves for this part of naivety.
More important than to learn those things by rote is to understand the meanings, to see what oneself can do within it, to realize and to accept that every value has its limitation, incl. tolerance.
Naivety is when we believe in things we hear and read everyday without thought or consideration.

  2. David says:

Some of the Setia students are threatening to seek political asylum abroad

This is our official statement on behalf of everybody at the Setia campus. If no solution is found in our efforts to participate in the life of the community, including enjoying education in our own country because we are now allowed to continue our schooling in East Jakarta, it means the State no longer protects the Indonesian nation as a whole.

What’s really going in this circumstances, is anyone behind the screen???

the blog owner is obviously quite a fanatic muslim, and quite intolerant to Christians (as are the rest of Indonesian muslims)
from the blog (the one in italic is mine):

Masih, banyak deretan catatan buruk mereka (SETIA students) terhadap warga. Apalagi masalah, MISI mereka di tengah2 kampung kami.

    Which means:
There are more bad things they (SETIA students) have done to the surrounding people. Especially their “Mission” in our village. …

Being an ex Muslim, I was always taught that all Christians are doomed to hell, that they are forever on a ‘mission’ to convert Muslims, that they convert muslims by offering the poor and hungry ones instant noodles, (and if they want to convert, what is wrong with that? why aren’t the other muslims giving them instant noodles instead?) that they are bad and immoral and dirty people that eat pork and have sex out of wedlock and gets drunk and goes gambling. All these doctrine by muslim elders which are ridiculous seeing as Islam is a ‘branch’ of Christianity and Judaism (75% of the Muslim holy book is derived from the Old testament and torah.)

so, no religious feelings in this conflict, my ass.
In Indonesia, when there is a conflict between two groups, one of which are muslims and the other christians, it is alwas religion related, based on hatred of muslims at christians. But throw in a thousand Hindus or Buddhist in the middle of the most religious Muslim village, nothing will happen.

  5. raden says:

But throw in a thousand Hindus or Buddhist in the middle of the most religious Muslim village, nothing will happen

in china, you throwed in a few clerics in XinYang and they will start bombing here & there … was that based on the muslim hatred to buddhist ? not at all … those are criminals that need to be punished

  6. Cukurungan says:

Is our presumption wrong? see below my girl:

Mission is inviting others to become disciples, to respond to the reign of God announced by Jesus. “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:19-20). We are sent into the world to challenge allegiances to false powers which bring death and destruction, to invite people and nations to accept the true rule of God which brings life and hope. We go, therefore, to baptize persons into the communities of disciples who teach and practice the message of Jesus in every way.

    cukurungan:
no it’s not totally wrong, but Muslims are not without a mission as well (and certainly not without fault, plenty of faults they have). I know many who dated christian girls, then gets them pregnant only to marry them and to have them convert. If not, they marry christian girls under false pretense, that they get to keep their own religions. when the girl gives birth to a child, the threats begins. The girl will not be able to go to church, the child must become a muslim and slowly, the girl will be required to surrender her religion and follow the husband. Many, many examples of this.

I did not grow up a christian, i grew up a muslim, and i know more about how muslims think and the doctrines they (I) received. I dont know how christians think and their doctrines, so I cannot comment on that.

If you quote the bible on this, many people can give you quotes from quran which shows its ‘mission’ (including kill those who will not accept islam) as well.

I do not agree with christian zealots and their mission to forcefully convert a person or nation (if such a thing exist) but as an indonesian (which is a predominantly muslim country) I disagree more with how muslims conduct themselves. i can presently let a sigh of relief out of the fact that at least i am no longer a disciple of any religion.

  8. therry says:

    Cukurungan,

This whole “quoting each other’s holy books” scheme is getting a bit old, don’t you think?

Don’t you have anything better to do other than dissecting other religion’s holy book, taking out little pieces here and there and mistranslating them yourselves to others which create misunderstanding and misleading interpretations to your fellow Muslims?

But I guess it must be legible to do things like that for someone like you, isn’t it (not the first time I seen it happening); you know, the whole badmouthing, my-religion-is-better-than-yours actions?

You Muslims always say that others do not understand your holy book by saying that a verse that sounds like ‘kill them’ means something else.

Well, the verse you quoted actually means that Jesus wanted his disciples to baptize people so that they were given holy spirits, in order to communicate with God by prayers and meditations.

But I guess that’s something a person like you won’t understand, seeing that you probably believe more in the presence of pocong, jin, genderuwo and ‘orang pintar‘ which requires you NOT to communicate to God but something else entirely.

Seeking help from other countries seems about right for the minorities in this country, seeing as the government wont help them at all.

I’d say that religions have outlived their purposes now. I wish those prophets will now come back to earth for just a few minutes to tell from CNN that people of the world now really need to move on…

  10. Ally says:

That’s pretty funny PrimaryDrive. It seems the prophets indeed need to get back to earth. But for me they need to get back in order to clarify what they have said and done that make their followers arguing each other. LOL… Peace on earth is still far away…

People nowadays seem to like to blame each other for their false and true ideology or whatever their false and true thought are based on. Even atheists need to call their prophets (or experts or founders?) to get back to earth and let they all talk to each other how to maintain these human beings.

For me, blaming each other is such a tiring moment. It’s time for the leaders to discuss among themselves. If it doesn’t work as well then we need to call a war? LOL Let’s get back to World War I.

  11. DXP says:

what do u think when u see muslims start bombing XinYang in the land of 2 billion non muslim CHINA ? we are at war against muslim terrorist who blend nicely under the name of Islam … we are at war now !

did u see enough denial of support from majority muslims about XinYang bombing ? did Arab & Indonesia condemn the act of attrocity about Xinyang bombing incident knowing Indonesia is the largest muslim country in the world ?
they are all silent … maybe happy too & DXP are not happy with that, it is not cool !

  12. kiwibali says:

    DXP

Why cant China just let Xinjiang free? The Uyghur people cant exactly be called “Chinese” due to their cultural, in a way racial, differences. The massive of influx of Han Chinese to the region hasn’t helped either (jumped from 6% in 1949 to 40%).
I dont favour the violent way that they have used to make their voices heard, but if the government wont help you and the major power in the world is to scared to criticize China, And with the current negative view towards Muslim that certainly hasn’t helped their cause It seems that this backlash is inevitable.
If Xianjiang wasnt rich in natural resources, would China really care about Xinjiang?

  13. Ally says:

    Kiwibali,

    What a phenomenon …. forming small countries…..

Is it more benefit to form small countries rather than working together in a bigger union?

  14. kiwibali says:

    What a phenomenon …. forming small countries…..

Is it more benefit to form small countries rather than working together in a bigger union?

Depends mate, do they have the resources to do so? do the Uighur people themself valued dependency and autonomy rather than the “trickle-down effect” of the booming economy.
There is always the chance of them restate their alligiance to other countries which have similar “ways”. Or the lest extreme, special autonomus region, although China will prob will never let this happen considering the huge natural resources that Xinjiang have.
But yes, bigger, in this sense, is ussually better, but to what extent?

The point of my post is mainly to point out to DXP, that even China, country he so dearly love, have the same flaws like everybody else.

Don’t you have anything better to do other than dissecting other religion’s holy book, taking out little pieces here and there and mistranslating them yourselves to others which create misunderstanding and misleading interpretations to your fellow Muslims?

I did not intend to cut and paste the other’s holy book to demonize other belief but I would like to show you that our suspicion is not baseless because there is a real organization who insist to push their own agenda without respecting sensitivity in our society, go to that link before you complaint to me.

I know many who dated christian girls, then gets them pregnant only to marry them and to have them convert. If not, they marry christian girls under false pretense, that they get to keep their own religions.

What I know in our society is the opposite of what you said, there are much more Muslim girl than Christian girls victims of this deceit. If your farther is real Muslim, he would teach you one principal thing that Islam never come with lying. Killer could be Muslim, bomber could be Muslim, a thieve could be Muslim but a liar can not be Muslim.

  16. rima says:

yet most the liars and the corrupt in our government are of which religion, cuku?

muslims, christians, buddhists, they all lie. lying is one of human being’s most natural but worse traits. since indonesia has a majority of muslims, i have seen and i know much more muslim liars and hypocrites than any religion. that would naturally change if i live in japan or china or the us.

bottom of the story, muslims in indo are as guilty of a ‘mission’ too. azan and ngaji with loudspeakers, intimidation to minority etc are enough reasons why many from other faiths convert to islam for many reasons but real conversion. some do it for marriage, some do it for career advancement, some do it for other reasons. you are unable to see this as you choose to see things from a muslim’s point of view. when you are like me, looking at things from an outsider’s point of view, only then will you see clearly, because you have no interest and are not invested in any of the religions.

  17. Purba Negoro says:

The Republic of Indonesia fully supports China’s territorial sovereignty including over US puppet nation Tibet, armked in 1922 by the West to attack China and the rebel district of Xinghua

Indonesia fully supports the People’s Communist Party’s One China Policy, right to rule its’ own domain without Colonial external interference or unjustified negative critique.

  18. Purba Negoro says:

China reciprocates Indonesia’s respect of sovereignty and governance- including the manner in which Indonesia deals with 20 million pro-Kuomintang Hokkien traitors and enemies of the Revolution.

  19. PrimaryDrive says:

I find this a very revealing quote from a true muslim:

Cukurungan : Killer could be Muslim, bomber could be Muslim, a thieve could be Muslim but a liar can not be Muslim.

Now I’m not sure anymore how to define a muslim 😀 Sorry … can’t resist this one 😀

  20. Cukurungan says:

yet most the liars and the corrupt in our government are of which religion, cuku?

If they are liars, I guarantee that they are not a true muslim but only a fake muslim like your self hi hi hi

bottom of the story, muslims in indo are as guilty of a ‘mission’ too. azan and ngaji with loudspeakers, intimidation to minority etc are enough reasons why many from other faiths convert to islam

We are not in mission to convert anyone but we have obligation to ensure our own brother and sister have to stay in our chosen path.

Now I’m not sure anymore how to define a muslim Sorry … can’t resist this one

Muslim and Liar can not in one heart of person…if someone liar, she/he is not true muslim full stop.

friend …it is very simple, if someone is a liar, how you can ensure his/her belief is not another lying

  21. Rambutan says:

If they are liars, I guarantee that they are not a true muslim but only a fake muslim like your self hi hi hi

Well, since you seem to consider yourself to be a true Muslim, let me say that true Muslims shouldn’t be arrogant and condescending either.

  22. DXP says:

at first, muslim hates Jews – Israel
second, muslim became USA’s enemy because USA protect the Jews
third, muslim is enemy of Europe countries
fourth, muslim is enemy of aussie / nz
fifth, muslim is enemy of Saudi / UEA
six, muslim is enemy of asean non muslim countries such as phillipines, sgp
now muslim declare as the enemy of china & want to create islamic state of china in xinyang – ha do u think it is so easy ? even uncle Sam can not change our way of live

china is different than USA, we got nothing to do with you guys (USA & muslims) who keep on attacking each other, but recently u attack us for stupid ideology & hatred reasons. Who is next will be your enemy ?
Eventually non are spare as your friends except yourself & your terrorist derivatif.
Not even uncle BUSH can dictate China in this coming beijing olympic, China will ignore those threats incl of the westerners & muslims threat. We are are we are, we are not you period !
We are a successful 2 B size population , we dont need liberal democracy advice from USA, nor bomb threat from you, we are the next world leader and we don’t need anybody to teach us how to run our internal affairs…. our method to run this country was proven & succesful and who is Indonessia ? a small population 250M only & unsuccesful muslim country with no progress? u can’t talk much in this case, talk only is cheap without showing progress is rubish

  23. Purba Negoro says:

DXP- you are obviously an ignorant with dreadful Singlish skills.

    you are completely wrong.

Indonesia is a founder of ASEAN.
Indonesia is by law and Constitution Secular NOT Islamic.
Pakistan, Qatar, Yemen, UAE, Saudi Arabia and Malaysia are all Islamic. NOT secular like Indonesia.

Indonesia alongside India is a Nationalist, Secular multi-religion nation. India has the 2nd largest Muslim population. Muslim violence in India has commonly been linked to Pakistani Intelligence.

Indonesia has warm relations with Australia and NZ- despite Australia stealing Indonesian territory- we have buried thee hatchet and we seek friendship and mutual; respect.
East Timor former enemy Xanana Gusmao is keen to do business with Indonesia rather than neo-Colonials Australia.
Gusmao blamed Austrlia for an assassination attempt.

USA is Indonesia’s 2nd largest investor. We have warm relations- like we seek with all nations- but like our friends in China, we do not agree with their Imperialist Corporate predation, their frequent illegal unprovoked aggression, their history of genocide and their support for a nation created by stealing another’s land, and then intitiating a gencide aginst them.

Indonesians have frequently shown we love Americans- but hate their Corporate-State rulers- like them.

Indonesia also has good relations with Singapore- interestingly better than the US-UK agent provocateur Malaysia- who built the bombs used in Bali.

Indonesia, Myanmar, Philippines and Cambodia have strong history of anti-Colonial solidarity.

Indonesia and Philippines both resisted the creation of US-UK puppets Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei.

Brunei is a warm friendly partner of Indonesia.

Indonesia fully supports Philippines territorial claim to North Kalimantan.
Indonesia fully supports Philippines sovereignty over Mindanao islands and most likely will support their claim to Spratley Islands- but we hope to mediate between all of our ASEAN friends for a mutually agreeable solution.

Indonesia is one of the few nations to have full diplomatic ties to North Korea.
Indonesia resisted US aggression in Vietnam and opposed the war between Vietnam and China as Colonial Divide et Impera

Indonesia also resisted US Imperialism with UK-US bases in RAF Changi, RAAF (Australian) Butterworth (Malaysia), Changi Naval Base and RAF Tengah.
Thus- Indonesia sides with CHina on the issue of global peace and prosperity.

Indonesia has given People’s Communist Party many dossiers on pro-Kuomintang traitors and COlonial collaborators.
Indonesia and People’s Republic are currently working on joint defense technology

China is one of Indonesia’s largest direct foreign investors and customers. We both seek mutual friendship and respect.
Indonesia fully respects China’s One-CHina policy but we hope we can moderate their claims to all of teh SOuth China Sea- which impacts our other friends Myanmar, Vietnam, Cambodia and Philippines.

    So- you are completely wrong.

Indonesians have no issue with the Manchu, Han and Wu Chinese- the issue lies with our mutual enemy- the parasitic colonial collaborators of Hokkien, Fujian and Teochew.

  24. billitone says:

    Purba Negoro: I am speechless.

Back to the topic, as a moslem who often seat in a sunday service in a church, I can’t stop thinking. As a moslem, here is what I read out of quran:

…Dan janganlah sekali-kali kebencianmu terhadap sesuatu kaum, mendorong kamu untuk berlaku tidak adil. Berlaku adillah, karena adil itu lebih dekat kepada taqwa…. (QS. 5:8)

    translated:
…Do not be provoked by your conflicts with some people into committing injustice. You shall be absolutely equitable, for it is more righteous…..

It’s a conflict, but one gotta admit it’s hatred. A moslem has to follow what is instructed in quran, in many cases, when there is hatred, DO NOT commit injustice.

I am new in Christianity, but it is about LOVE. Remember that song, where is the love?

    One more from quran:
…Dan sesungguhnya kamu dapati yang paling dekat persahabatannya dengan orang-orang yang beriman ialah orang-orang yang berkata:”Sesungguhnya kami ini orang Nasrani”…(QS. 5:82)

    translated:
And you will find that the closest people in friendship to the believers (moslem) are those who say, “We are Christian…”

    Peace to everyone.

Whose chosen path? Wahabbi, Salafi, Sunni, Shia, Sufi…?
Poor brother and sister, no wonder some of them got confused and chose a new prophet and became Ahmadiyyah.

  26. tomaculum says:

So many fake muslims in Indonesia? Hi, hi … 🙂
What about “hate”, Cuk? Is it allowed for a muslim to hate?
What about calling names, Cuk? Is it allowed in Islam?
What about forcing someone to do something? Is it allowed?
Yeah, questions …. and no answer …(?)

  27. David says:

    Interesting letter Primary Drive…

The deputy governor of Jakarta is saying now that Setia will be re-located. He says the school authorities want to move, because the current building is too small now. The students will go back to the school temporarily until another place is built/found.

  28. springlife says:

PrimaryDrive : Thank you for the website and your letter to the writer. If he dared to write such an explicit letter to Jakarta Post he should base on correct information in order not to confuse the public.
Hence, I hope his written facts are nothing else but the truth. And as we all know the TRUTH, the TRUTH will set us free. Interesting forum indeed.

  29. Cukurungan says:

blockquote>So many fake muslims in Indonesia? Hi, hi …

Yes …otherwise Indonesia will become strongest country on earth

What about “hate”, Cuk? Is it allowed for a muslim to hate?

Hate and Love for a Muslim should not be a personal matter but it must be a cause matter, to make it clear I will try to give you an illustration even with my extraordinary English:

Once day in the middle of war between the Muslim Army and the kaffir army, Ali RA one of Islam fighter succeeded to corner a Kaffir soldier and finally kaffir soldier loss his sword and tumble in ground when Ali RA ready to swing his sword to kill him suddenly kafir soldier manage to splatter Ali RA face with his saliva and suddenly Ali RA abort his attempt to kill and walk away from the kafir soldier. The kafir soldier is so amazed with this Ali RA action and he asked Ali RA why Ali does not kill him.

    Ali RA said:
You make me anger personally therefore if I kill you it is because my own personnel matter and nothing with GOD Cause. And I should not kill anyone because of my personal matter.

Friend the last thing I have to say that you will never understand Islam completely unless you convert in it.

We love anyone and hate no one, as long as you are not under “GOD cause” to be hate, we will not hate you and another thing you should know that Allah is so love with Kaffir as well so He actually intended to provide all kafirin house with ladder and stair made from silver see quoted from Quran below:

[043:033] And were it not that (all) men might become of one (evil) way of life, We would provide, for everyone that blasphemes against (God) Most Gracious, silver roofs for their houses and (silver) stair-ways on which to go up,

[043:034] And (silver) doors to their houses, and thrones (of silver) on which they could recline,
