I Made Titib, a former senior official at the Department of Religion, said at a seminar in Bali on 8th December that globalization threatened great harm for Balinese Hindus.
He said the entrance of global culture into Bali would likely cause people to become disoriented, hedonistic, materialistic, and secular, and would lead to social conflicts.
Western culture was most to blame, he said, and was in opposition to eastern culture, which was more spiritual.
In theological terms, he said currently it was like the age of Kali Yuga, a kind of Dark Age, which Hindus traditionally see as one of the four stages of development that the world goes through.

Civilization and culture can only be built on economic prosperity when people have enough means and free time to occupy themselves with other things than the bare necessities. So how come a society with a unique culture like the Balinese that has been built over more than a thousand years, suddenly needs mass tourism for its survival? -

Why not impose bali as a vegetarian designated zone whereby tourist will have to embrace, in respect for the local customs of course. I am sure many tourist will not mind this measure, as long as booze and grass is considered vege diet.

I agree Enigmatic, the come & go rich tourists in Bali are welcome, they may stay for 1 – 4 weeks and spend the dollar whom Balinese need it for living are allright, rich people on the mood of vacation from Europe or USA will NOT influence the Hindunese & Balinese social ritual life style.

Indonesian is free country. Bali is not for Balinese. All Indonesian have a right to live anywhere in Indonesian area include in Bali. Balinese ritual is not in any danger of losing it’s place of supreme importance for the balinese. They are addicted to it. for many Balinese ceremonies are more important than eating.
I know these rituals and the unique culture are what gives Bali it’s edge. It’s what attracts tourist dollars. But to me a lot of those rituals are just about trying to increase wealth, (by sogok Tuhan system) and also to impress the neighbours, (my banten bigger than your banten, my kebaya more fancy than yours etc.) The problem for Balinese people now is money, ignorance and Indonesian TV.
They have too much money, not enough education and they watch too much bullsh*t soapies on tv from jakarta. -

In the past few years I can see kaki limas springing every where along the roads, pecel Lele, ayam bakar, soto, nasi goreng, etc. Kaki Lima supposed to be concentrated in Pasar Kaget but now we can see more along the streets. The number of Warung/rumah makan Padang is increasing fast, but better organized. May be Kali Lima is the fascination that brings tourist to Bali. Unless Bali is better managed and reform, Bali will face destruction sooner or later.

Right. At most tourism destination in the third world those are too many persons take advantage without any attention to local culture. Local Govt still hard to find a best way to manage “kakilimas” that I believe happen throughout mostly in big city in Indonesia, not only in Bali. Compare to other city in Indonesia, Bali is still “better manage” for kakilimas, I suppose.
However, if you see rightfully, many mass products (that tag “made in Bali”) are not really made in Bali or made by Balinese. Many of them come from East Java. Tourism in Bali has give many benefit to peoples in Java, not only people in Bali. So, it was make many peoples in Java (include Moslems) disappointed too as Balinese did when heard a lunatic moslem bombed himself in Bali.
There is an idiom at most tourism destination all over the world that those to make succeed which is SUN SAND and SEX. In all area tourism destination in Indonesia, most tourist can get easily SUN and SAND. But, there are only plenty tourism site in Indonesia that serve SEX. I think Bali is one of tourist destination that serve SEX even still prohibited as open operation. And, I don’t believe low level Moslems that struggle to make living in Bali even their have totally different ritual religion to Hinduist cause ANIMALS BEHAVIOR such as:

Obviously there are some tourist that call white monkeys that jeopardy Balinese culture. With their animals “crocodile dundee” behavior which bring to Bali in several weeks make Balinese traditional behavior suffer. I wonder how much money they spend in Bali for two or three weeks? Compare if they go “happy hour” in Sydney, Canberra, or Melbourne. I really don’t think this white monkeys have plenty of money and gut get vocation to Paris, Acapulco, or Hawaii. They go to Bali because its cheap and can easily take SUN SAND and SEX (even they get from underage boy and girl).
Balinese are never having problem with money, ignorance, or Indonesian National TV sinetron. The main cause of what that those cause Balinese peoples to become disoriented, hedonistic, materialistic, and secular, and would lead to social conflicts, is what that white monkeys animals “crocodile dundee” behavior that bring to Bali. Indeed, they bring their ignorance and stupidity bushes village peoples with them that they show off everyday in Bali. They think they can make the Great Bali as a zoo like in their hometown. Well actually, this white monkey has been getting complaints about the tv from the balinese themselves… they are complaining about the affect on their children…. so many balinese kids are terroising their parents, demanding motor bikes and hand phones, or they won’t go to school. the young guys won’t work, the only thing they’ll deen to do is pick grandma up from the rice fields on the new motorbike after she has done toiling for the day.
Ade wanto, it’s handy to be able to play the blame game, but you don’t know what you are talking about. Plenty of places in bali never see tourists, in the remote villages… they still have the same social problems…. good try though.

yeah, and so you’re trying to say, big bucks means big morals? I’m not playing the blame game either…. tourisim for sure has a negative impact in some ways, but balinese don’t really copy westerners, they get pregnant to balinese, (as teenagers often!) they watch indonesian tv, see handphones, cars, a lifestyle (pseudo Indonesian modern lifestlye which only exists in cinetron or higher levels of urban indonesian society) and they want that. They have money due to tourisim. They don’t want to live a western life, they want a balinese life with jakarta attributes.
How many balinese parents are telling us of their kids who refuse to go to school if they don’t get a motorbike, or threaten to kill themselves because their parents won’t buy them a handphone? So many! It’s starts when they are little, getting money from their parents to buy junk at the warung…. their teeth rot, but to the parents the problem is if they don’t give in to them they cry….. cause all the other kids are getting it…. we can’t have them crying now can we? Bali is a world reknowned destination and has been for decades. People go there because it is exotic and the particular Balinese culture plays a large part in that. From Australia, it is relatively cheap (due to being relatively close compared to Europe, the US and the rest of Asia) but has fallen from favour as a result of the bombings. No doubt it will get back due to the governments long overdue Visit Indonesia initiative in 2008.
There are resorts of all levels from the top end places at Nusa Dua to scungy fleapits in Kuta attracting surfie yobbos. Most of the White Monkeys sucking beer in Kuta are trying to get into the pants of their fellow White Monkeys – if you take the trouble to observe rather than rant and generalize. Hardly any are trying to pull Indo girls. The language barrier is pretty high.
There are heaps of families in Sanur, lots of trendies in Seminyak, eco-tourism is starting up in the more remote parts of the island. There are over a hundred scuba diving shops. To reduce all visitors to Bali to cheapskate low class drunken sex tourists is just plain ignorant. Most are normal people (of various social levels) spending their hard earned money on a vacation doing various things whether is be arts and crafts at Ubud, elephant rides, water fun park, surfing or scuba diving at Tulumben, Bali has a pile of attractions in a very compact area.
As to the West and Sex and Bali becoming a place where teenagers get pregnant. That is a global problem and it is largely due to Western values of sexual liberation which are rapidly being adopted in Asia. Such values are a threat to traditional belief systems which are largely about male control over the bodies of women and ensuring that male priests get paid lots of money for useless ceremonies.
Such beliefs deserve to enter the trash can of history in my humble opinion.

Do not forget that the pseudo Indonesian lifestyle is the result of copying of the westerners/Hollywood lifestyle, of course the copy result would not as clear as the original one. However, if you want a quick reason why the West is better than traditional society in terms of creativity and therefore technical/military innovation and therefore power/wealth (these all go together). Then sex and drugs and freedom generally (and freedom of expression particularly) pretty well sum it up.
Creativity is a major cause of wealth/power generation. Traditional thinking tends to stifle it or channel it into well worn rituals. If you want to stay poor, stay traditional. Your choice…

What has traditional thinking got to do with stifling creativity? Unless you meant conservative thinking? And even by saying conservative thinking does not reason out too well.
There are people in this world who are considered traditional or conservative by their behaviour or culture but they are not poor.
Poverty is not borne out of being culturally or mentally traditional/conservative.Poverty is caused by lack of education or skill or experience or intelligence or health or handicaps or age or discrimination (race, sex, religion, etc.,) or inadequate non-poverty employment opportunities or inadequate overall demand and low national income (in terms of economics – macro problems, macro policy), wars, famine, natural disasters, colonial history, centralisation of power, inherited poverty, corruption and so on.

I don’t see that West is better than traditional society in all aspect of life. And, I really don’t see any relation between sex freedom and creativity. In what way that West society that those have sex freedom more creative than other society that those forbid sex freedom? In finding HIV/AIDS medicine or what? I advice you to read history about penicillin and freedom of sex movement. It takes 600 years before human find a right medicine to cure syphilis. Before penicillin was found your dick will be amputate if you got gonorrhea.

I observe, as you say so, even in the West a majority would aspire to some sort of long-term committed monogamy, that those many evidences that cheat is a “right” too.
