Presidential Ethnicity

Nov 12th, 2007, in News, by

The president doesn’t need to be ethnically Javanese.

Ambitious man, anti-sharia crusader, presidential hopeful in 2009, wayang enthusiast, Asian values man, and never-ending source of material for IM, vice-president Jusuf Kalla, said on 2nd November that the president need not be a Javanese person, as has been the case ever since independence.

Jusuf Kalla
Jusuf Kalla.

The commonly held notion that the president must be Javanese, because Javanese are the biggest ethnic group in the country, was discriminative and lacking in clear thought, he said to a gathering discussing “Tiga Tahun SBY-JK”.

People these days were able to evaluate whether somebody was a good candidate for office regardless of his ethnicity, but he admitted that some Javanese people were not happy when he brought the topic up. indopos

    Janma,

That’s overly kind, methinks. Oddly, another spoiled brat, V.S. Naipaul got it right about the Wahid family and it’s most famous member: Gus Dur was a spoiled brat who had his title as head of NU handed to him on a plate. He expected Indonesia and the world to hail him as a wali and pandito (sage) the way illiterate villagers did in Java. Gus Dur was in his element in a place like Yogyakarta, plenty of adoring NU cronies, nationalist intellectuals and second-tier Indonesian reporters (who hadn’t made it to Jakarta yet), dutifully reporting anything he wished to spout on that day. Unfortunately the financial markets were less forgiving.
Yes, he championed moderate Islam and respect for Indonesian chinese. But he pissed it away on all his temper tantrums doing great damage to those noble ideals and tearing a vent for radical and intolerant Islam. It’ s sad, but perhaps typically Indonesian story.

To Janma – I gave my sister was a tongue-in-cheek answer and not meant to poke fun at an old man’s physical diability. I repent. LOL.

To Achmad Sudarsono – WOW ! Achmad Sudarsono, *rubs me eyes and rereads Achmad’s comment,
WOW again !! I recant. If you keep speaking like that from now on, the Presidency may be yours. LOL.

Does this mean Indonesia will be exploiting its UFO technology after 2009?

This is good news for Garuda Indonesia, maybe they’ll be the first to benefit from this technology. The US has its Boeings, Europe its Airbusses and Indonesia its Flying Saucers…..

    iamisaid,

Yes, GD made me mad. A lot of wong cilik suffered over the lack of progress whilst he annoyed the palace protocol eunuchs with his sandal jepit and spouted clever quotes from the Mahabharata or Janis Joplin.

Will get back to the standard nonsense shortly.

Yes, but the one we’re stuck with now, who composes love songs in his spare time and at the same time is allergic to belly buttons, should better learn something from the Mahabharata or even Janis Joplin. It seems to me that ‘the big leap forward’ certainly won’t happen before 2009. A strong arm will have to pull us out of the mud – Lapindo and other quicksands – first.

Achmad:: I will run for President in 2009.

Aside from pun 🙂 anyone considering to make him/herself candidate is faced by the daunting task of collecting at least 14 millions votes for her party just to make her elligible. In Europe, you’ll already be a france president if you have that many votes.

To win I need about 36 millions votes. If I’m to bribe 1.000.000 Rp per vote, I only need 4 billions USD…. Sadly I’m a poor guy who already has a hard time paying his own rent. But JK on the other hand … has lots of USD

    In praise of Achmad Sudarsono

Okay guys, put away that yawn and that smirk.

Being a “newbie” at IM I can only relate to the few instances of having read IM’s columnist, Achmad Sudarsono’s contributions.

For want of a better description, his essays may be called “AdSense”.

Yes, AdSense like as in Computer AdWare. You know, AdWares that computer users dread which comes packaged with download free programs or in other instances those pernicious pop ups that appear on the internet browers.

Make no mistake about AdSense. It does not connote to add sense or to add more sense.

We may yet scratch our scalps till it bleeds whilst thinking bewilderedly – how do we separate his intelligent nonsense from his alter ego? Perhaps, some of us would rather say his unintelligible sense.

Dare we say that in our midst, he personifies a psychic? He unabashedly rethinks the unthinkable.

There is ethical counsel in the words of the famous poem by Max Erhmann.
We ought to hold our peace”¦..

    “and listen to others,
    even to the dull and the ignorant;
    they too have their story.”

So, we are right back to where we started.

I’d like to say nice try, but, um as Bart Simpson says..Not ! Pal, your metaphors are even more confusing than your argument. Aside from the fact that computer software metaphors are really hard to pull off, what are you trying to say ?

    – Achmad doesn’t make sense ?
    – He’s annoying ?
    – He’s boring ?
    – All of the above ?

If any of the above, you’re giving mixed messages. Help !

Your posts are funny Achmad. But I think they should be taken with a pinch of salt. It’s hillarious, and IM has its dash of humour (albeit nonsensical) from contributors like you.

Your posts allow me to relax from exam stress and give me new plots for essays. Thanks Achmad!

Hey, if this guy really is an “anti-shariah crusader”, I’m all for that. But, of course, if he’s swimming in corruption like Suharto, maybe not such a good idea..

So you guys think Hamengku Buwono X won’t be running?

  14. Pena Budaya says:

Kalla preferred to forgive Soeharto’s corruption and his crimes than sending him on the trial. How can we rely on such character to become a president – likewise to forgive his allies who committed crime to people who (will) vote him? It is insane! Sounds to me that he is a leader without social responsibility vision. What is the point to vote for him?

Unless you define “alien” as someone who is not a homosapien, eg. a cow, then perhaps I can agree with you.

However, please remember that greed is inherent in humans and that corruption will still occur no matter who takes over as president. The difference is that

However, please remember that greed is inherent in humans and that corruption will still occur no matter who takes over as president. The difference is that the degree in corruption varies, and on a scale of 1-10, with 10 being VERY corrupted, I guess Indonesia has a corruption rating of 20000.

    To quote Lord Acton,

Power corrupts, but absolute power corrupts abolutely

Thus no matter who takes charge of Indonesia, corruption will still occur, although we can only hope that the magnitude will be reduced greatly.
