Singer Rebecca Soejati Reijman, who is from the Netherlands, was performing on stage in Banda Aceh on 26th August in front of 4,000 people in support of the Jakarta-based band “Nidji” when the head covering that she was obliged to wear in the sharia-law province got caught in the wind and fell off, revealing her head, and the hair on top of it. Because of this she had to leave the stage and the concert ended abruptly.

Although she is not Muslim Rebecca said she didn’t mind covering herself up in order that her Aceh-based fans could see her live but apparently some people were not happy with the effort that she had made, even before the headwear fell off. What was covering her upper body did not extend all the way and left her hands some parts of her arms visible, causing some people to mutter in disapproval, it is said.
The concert almost didn’t take place at all because various Islamic groups and clerics put up some stiff resistance. Fakhruddin bin Asyimi of the Anti Sin League (Badan Anti Maksiat, BAM) said on 25th August: serambinews

a big mistake, it would embarrass and tarnish Islamic law.

Nevertheless the concert went ahead, with 150 policemen standing guard.
Maybe because I’m not Muslim they think it’s against Islamic law [for me to appear on stage in a concert].
Yet still more woe was to befall Rebecca on her sojourn to the Veranda of Mecca. After the concert she was unable to leave her hotel for some time in order to catch a flight back to Jakarta because the event organizers, Dian Asmara, hadn’t paid the full hotel bill. okezone

We have seen this in the past in a small country in Europe. Some ideology that did not accept criticism without trying to kill those who criticized them. They murdered millions in the process.

As an Acehnese, I disagree with what has been happen. Islam in Aceh is different with Islam in Saudi. And actually we didn’t need Sharia Law for it is already in our blood since our ancestors convert to Islam. Remember our great heroine, Cut Nya’ Dien, no one or even no ‘tengku’ ever complain bout the way she used the ‘jilbab'(as seen from her photos or painting).
Further more, The Sharia Law was Jakarta’s strategy to redeem the conflict between GAM and GoI. They think that it would change Acehnese opinion to GoI(…sadly it does). GAM is not fighting for Sharia or Religion, we are fighting for justice n prosperity for Acehnese. Though we have the power now, it is still difficult to change the opinion of some clerics (sponsored by Jakarta) bout the way Sharia should be.
Finally, for everybody who has donated, involved or worked for Tsunami Relief, on behalf of Acehnese, I would like to thank you all and may Allah bless you.

The Wilayatul Hizbah (shari’a police) in Practice
On 19 February 2006, in one of the most notorious incidents, three women non-governmental organisation (NGO) activists taking part in a UNDP workshop on peace education at the Sultan Hotel in Banda Aceh were seized without warning by a WH team for not wearing headscarves while talking quietly in the hallway outside their hotel rooms at about 11:30 pm. Some twenty WH men and women grabbed them by the arms, took them down the stairs “as though we were criminals” and put them into a vehicle with six previously seized women. They were taken to the mayor’s office, where they were told to sign statements admitting their guilt. They refused to do so, but in the end had no choice. They were also obliged to listen to a 45-minute lecture on the need to live according to Shari’a principles. Other workshop participants went to the police station and made a formal complaint against the WH. The raid was overseen by Muzakkir Tulot, who made coarse remarks to the women and their fellow activists.
There is also another story about young male foreign relief-workers playing football in their free time who were arrested by the WH because their knees weren’t properly covered.
Remember, before pulling someone out of the mud in Aceh, check your dress first.
And why complain? You stupid kafir, you should have known the condition and the system of Aceh before you came to help. Don’t you realize that helping poor Acehnese Muslims is a privilege?

All about females, they way they must be dressed, fully covered, otherwise they are not abiding to the rule. It must be the man who made the rule. All about the men, with their egotistical mind who are only interested in the beauty of females (sometimes not all beauty given there is limited choice) and whats between their legs. Allow me to strike a personal note here.
Before witnessing certain events in Bali all religions were for me just different ways to find guidance in a world full of mysteries and unanswered questions. Then, trying to come to terms with what I had seen I started to read the Qur’an. I was flabbergasted. At first it seemed to me like delusional nonsense. On each page there was doom and gloom on one side and paradisiacal hysteria on the other. Then I began to study hadiths and Muhammad’s biography and gradually it became clear.
The entire scam of Islam and its ‘holy’ prophiteer can be summarized in three letters: MSP (money, sex and power) . And I admit Muhammad was a genius because he realized that the best way to achieve these goals was to intimidate and brainwash people by instigating FEAR and GUILT. That’s why Muslims have to prostrate themselves. Did it never occur to you that if you succeed to induce feelings of guilt and fear in a person you can do with him/her whatever you want? Next step is to fabricate a god who only speaks to yourself and who orders everybody to follow your commands. If on top of it you provide your audience (the Muslims) with a scapegoat (the kaffirs, especially Jews and Christians because they were at hand) then the scam is complete because you will be considered a saviour who delivers those who believe from the guilt and fear you created in the first place. Finally, to round it off and to placate the weak and the kind of heart, throw in some sweet verses about righteous deeds and compassion with the less endowed brothers and sisters. Success guaranteed.

He also disgraces islam as a faith by saying these things.It’s already shown to the world that the Taliban regime in Aceh is one of the most ungrateful regimes there is, including a big part of the population. Completely the opposite of the people of Yogyakarta and Klaten who were 100x more grateful for the help they got after the earthquake then the people of Aceh after the tsunami.
That shows which is known already for ages: a big difference between the tolerant Javanese and the conservative, intolerant attitude of the Acehnese. -
Most of the Acehnese people were content being the veranda of mekkah without implementing the sharia. i would know, my dad is acehnese.
even before sharia was implemented you can see nobody dressing indecently in Aceh. Even if you see women without headcover, they are never with sexy clothing. all clothes were respectable. Religion or should I say Islam, was followed rigorously, but people still have their own rights to do as they please, listen to music, watch tv and they all have a set of norms that were much more conservative than, say, java, but not crazy like now.
It is sad to see a place (or a country) that was once so beautiful and so full of its own culture to be invaded by arabic culture. It’s sad to see indonesians loving every bit of the arabic culture when in fact the arabs dont care a bit about them. arabs dont even regard muslims of color, they only respect their own kind, the arabs.

Miss Rebecca, please don’t take Aceh people as the True Moslem in this world. There are a lot of Moslem that was far more different than Aceh people as i believe that there are jews that are far different from Israel or there are Christians that are far different from Rome Catholics. You should know that there are moslems out there that are the opposite from Aceh people. Someday, you will know and understand.
