The Three Dont’s

President Yudhoyono outlines his Three Dont’s.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) on May 21st urged all people in the country to observe the “three dont’s”, they being:

  • Don’t be too free-living.
  • Don’t be materialistic.
  • Don’t slander people.

He said these things while addressing leaders of the Rabithah Ma’ahid Islamiyah (RMI), an association of Islamic boarding schools.

Yudhoyono

Of the first injunction:

Don’t make use of freedom without limits and without wisdom. It’s dangerous. Make use of freedom in a responsible way.

Freedom had become a “commander” in society, unrestricted freedom harmed others and was unwise.

The second presidential “don’t”:

Over the top materialism is hedonism.

One of the dangers of globalisation was this excessive materialism and seeking after worldly pleasures, he said.

Let’s prevent this kind of lifestyle from developing in Indonesia. Islam teaches that there must be a balance between this world and the next.

What was worse, he said, was hedonistic materialism on the part of some people in what was still a developing country would see the poor and unfortunate left behind.

The final “don’t” involved being very careful about criticising wise leaders and other VIP’s, in all likelihood including his good self.

Don’t. Whether leaders or other figures. Everyone has to be careful what they say. Imagine if our country became a sea of slander. Accusing anyone you like, that would be extraordinarily sinful.

The people you criticise have families, SBY reminded listeners, and they could slander you back even worse. antara

Perhaps in the spirit of the third “don’t” SBY not long ago (12th May) urged the owners of newspapers to practise self-censorship. The government no longer took harsh action against newspapers that got out of line, he said, this was counter-productive in the long run, so editors were expected to exercise the proper restraint themselves. antara

Wow, what a load of pointless crap.

Ah well, just another spineless president that disappoints me after my initial hope of Reformasi.

  2. Putu Alberto Lee says:

If I were a president, I’ll just ask my people one thing:

    “Don’t be such an @$5h0l3”.

  3. DoOs says:

I agree with the president. Liberal ‘pricks’, LSM, and other NGO movements should not protest without knowing the circumstances of the words they give out. Controversial mind sets are dominating the population, many people now have the freedom of speech without reasoning and responsibility.

Wow, what a load of pointless crap.

The article is not a ‘crap’, it gives alot of morale behind it and in terms of the progression, the ideal conflict that has been purging SBY over the pasy years. Also the reformasi you claim being hope leads us to a feudalistic world of Indonesia. How a great Asian culture evolved into a fully democratic system without knowing the consequences is the same as those who liberally say opinions judging other ppl without knowing consequences.

  4. Dimp says:

What about “Don’t talk too much, just do it”.

  5. Don’t be materialistic.

    Talk to yourself Mr. President!

  6. DoOs says:

Exactly don’t talk to much just do it. But then again, what can a good man do when he leads a flock of brainless sheep with no stick and surrounded by wolves.

  7. Ihaknt says:

DoOs,your last comment was true, but being a good man is not enough, he needs to be stronger. You dont have to look far for example. He hasnt done anything about FPI and yet the group is running amok and destabilising the country in the name of Islam. Pah! We havent had a strong and wise leader for the country only dictatorship.

  8. DoOs says:

No although I know him close. ;D.
He has the milk of human kindness which I appreciate. Although a lesson I learned from the beginning was that in this new world, to beat an evil requires a ‘greater evil’. I like that.

Now you are back on earth. But those “Liberal pricks like NGO”, how about those that helped the tsunami victims, the earthequake victims. I last heard that Indonesian refused their help by saying those that was contributed we bad stocks! So are we referring to all those charitable NGO or NGO as a whole?
