Halal Certification

Mar 19th, 2007, in News, by

Many drug and cosmetic companies do not have halal certification.

The body charged with halal certification of medicine and cosmetics companies, the LPPOM, a division of the Majelis Ulama Indonesia (MUI), says there are 120 drugs’ companies and seven make-up producers that have failed to obtain their halal certificate. Only five of the former and one of the latter have managed to get the certification from MUI, says Muhamad Nadratuzzaman Hosen of the LPPOM.

Muhamad said that producers of food, medicines and cosmetics are not obliged by the government to obtain the halal certificate but that his organisation strongly urged companies to do so in order that Muslims not have to consume forbidden things. antara

    What are them?

  2. El Grancombo Puertorico says:

    It’s weird his logic.

is organisation strongly urged companies to do so in order that Muslims not have to consume forbidden things.

Shouldn’t it be clear for the moslems, that if a product doesn’t have that “halal label”, then it’s not “halal”?

So, what this fuss is all about? So those companies decided not to obtain “halal label”, and so…? Just don’t buy the product. Period.

Apparently MUI needs some quick cash.

  3. Andrew says:

his organisation strongly urged companies to do so in order that Muslims not have to consume forbidden things.

He makes it sound like those companies are at fault. Who forces them to “consume” them anyway… why does he think they “have to consume forbidden things”?

Those companies are in the business of making money, if they think their target customers need an assurance that the products are halal, they will for sure get the certification.

  4. Madesh says:

It is the way how to make money easily. Or is it free for certification process?

Don’t they know that most of water or even tap water consumed in Jakarta is contaminated with Coli basil that means human or even animal waste which is HARAM?
So what are you going to drink my friends?
COKE? It is made by Westerners which is HARAM as well.

There will be only your sweat left to drink which you still have to ask MUI to get permission.

Or is it the way to chase away foreign investors?

  5. Ihaknt says:

Does this mean that the government will start labeling their money halal and haram depending on how they get it? Hypocrites!

  6. Dimp says:

Majelis Ulama Indonesia (MUI), says there are 120 drugs’ companies and seven make-up producers that have failed to obtain their halal certificate.

How does one fail to obtain the certificate? By not paying enough money to MUI?

  7. Rockstar says:

    ok here’s the thing.
My parents owned a small bakery and we were told by the local authority to be ready for the inspection. The purpose of this inspection was to know if we used HALAL materials to produce breads. If we passed the test we would be granted a HALAL certificate.

The goal is good in my opinion, but as we know there’s always something behind it. A gimmick if you will. We have to pay Rp 2.000.000,00 for this inspection. Mind you though Rp 2M at that time was quite huge especially for my parents.

I mean why on earth we have to pay for an inspection that was initiated by the goverment. That’s a joke.

Beside all they did was went to the production room, chat a bit, look at the materials and left. All that for Rp 2M.

  8. Dimp says:

So rockstar did you pay, or are you part of the companies that failed to obtain halal certification. I just think that this is bunch of bs. How can you be sure that the companies will not not change their materials?

  9. Madesh says:

This country is full of thugs. We can find them everywhere, not only at the intersections but also in the offices including the MUI’s.
We can find them out by seeing the way they earn the money for living.
They are repeating their blunder they did at AJINOMOTO.

  10. Robert says:

    Dimp,

How can you be sure that the companies will not not change their materials?

This is always the problem. If you know you will be inspected by the authorities you make sure that you get your act together. Pre-announced inspections won’t work, “raid”-type inspections will. Apart from that, as an end end-user you never know whether the materials you buy are halal or not. Even if the label says Halal.
So the whole chain should be inspected and not only the end-user. When you have to pay for a government initiated inspection, that is going to be a nice moneymaker then.

  11. Matahari says:

What a way to make easy money, imagine if every product needed to be certified with Halal, how much money this organisation will make?

  12. Tomaculum says:

Ooops, which one is the legislative body in Indonesia: MUI or MPR/DPR?

  13. Dimp says:

    Hi Robert,

So actually halal certification is not even worth the paper it’s printed on.

Just as long as you can pay MUI, you can get the certificate, this is ironic. MUI actually getting bribes to issue halal certification.

  14. Hassan says:

Dimp: We can add to the irony if we consider that the Department of Religious Affairs and the Department of Education tops the ranking in terms of corruption. Tsk..tsk.. Only in Indonesia..

  15. Bas says:

Of course they urge the companies to do so. Have you seen the price of that stupid piece of paper?!!

Put that islamic mafia in jail (MUI, Departemen agama..). They are the real ones on ruin this country.

  16. Dimp says:

    Hi Hassan,

That is why the government should close the Departemen Agama, furthermore, the government should not meddle with religion. Religion should be a private matter between human and God.

  17. Mohammed Khafi says:

God clearly tell’s us Muslims in Al Quran, what is Haram. What is not Haram is by definiton Halal, we don’t need anybody making up rules for us that Allah has not given.

Halal certification is just like Hadith and Sunnah, a manmade innovation to give more power and control of the Ummah to the Islamic Religious Establishment. In this case we also have the money as well!

The following list is for the members of MUI as they obviously need to be pointed to the correct verses related to consumable items in Al Quran, you will also see if you read through the verses, that if people are forced out of necessity, to eat or use any of these items, then there is no sin attached. Why does the Islamic establishment, make such a big deal out of these things, whilst ignoring so many other more important issues?

He has only forbidden you what dies of itself, and blood, and flesh of swine, and that over which any other than God has been invoked; but whoever is driven to necessity, not desiring, nor exceeding the limit, no sin shall be upon him; surely God is Forgiving, Merciful. 2:173

Forbidden to you are: dead meat, blood, the flesh of swine, and that on which hath been invoked the name of other than God; that which hath been killed by strangling, or by a violent blow, or by a headlong fall, or by being gored to death; that which hath been eaten by a wild animal; unless ye are able to slaughter it, that which is sacrificed on stone; also is the division by raffling with arrows: that is impiety. This day have those who reject faith given up all hope of your religion: yet fear them not but fear Me. This day have I perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion. But if any is forced by hunger, with no inclination to transgression, God is indeed Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful. 5:03

To hunt and to eat the fish of the sea is made lawful for you, a provision for you and for seafarers; but to hunt on land is forbidden you so long as ye are on the pilgrimage. Be mindful of your duty to God, unto Whom ye will be gathered.
    5:96

Say: I do not find in that which has been revealed to me anything forbidden for an eater to eat of except that it be what has died of itself, or blood poured forth, or flesh of swine– for that surely is unclean– or that which is a transgression, other than God having been invoked on it; but whoever is driven to necessity, not desiring nor exceeding the limit, then surely your Lord is Forgiving, Merciful. 6:145

Therefore eat of what God has given you, lawful and good , and give thanks for God’s favor if Him do you serve.
He hath forbidden for you only carrion and blood and swineflesh and that which hath been immolated in the name of any other than God; but he who is driven thereto, neither craving nor transgressing, lo! then God is Forgiving, Merciful.
And speak not, concerning that which your own tongues qualify (as clean or unclean), the falsehood: “This is lawful, and this is forbidden,” so that ye invent a lie against Allah. Lo! those who invent a lie against Allah will not succeed.
A brief enjoyment; and theirs a painful doom.
    16:14-17

I think the members of MUI also need to remember the following verses:

O ye who believe! Forbid not the good things which Allah hath made lawful for you, and transgress not, Lo! Allah loveth not transgressors.
Eat of that which Allah hath bestowed on you as food lawful and good, and keep your duty to Allah in Whom ye are believers.
    5:87-88

They are lost indeed who kill their children foolishly without knowledge, and forbid what Allah has given to them forging a lie against Allah; they have indeed gone astray, and they are not the followers of the right course. 6:140

And two of camels and two of cows. Say: Has He forbidden the two males or the two females or that which the wombs of the two females contain? Or were you witnesses when Allah enjoined you this? Who, then, is more unjust than he who forges a lie against Allah that he should lead astray men without knowledge? Surely Allah does not guide the unjust people.6:144

Say: Tell me what Allah has sent down for you of sustenance, then you make (a part) of it unlawful and (a part) lawful. Say: Has Allah commanded you, or do you forge a lie against Allah?
And what will be the thought of those who forge lies against Allah on the day of resurrection? Most surely Allah is the Lord of grace towards men, but most of them do not give thanks.
    10:59-60

The worshippers of false gods say: “If Allah had so willed, we should not have worshipped aught but Him – neither we nor our fathers,- nor should we have prescribed prohibitions other than His.” So did those who went before them. But what is the mission of messengers but to preach the Clear Message? 16:35

    Peace

  18. Tahir says:

Mohammad Khafi, Jazakumulah khair. I would like to add one thing that we muslim today are becomming very weak in our faith. If we make our faith strong. We would never get all those problems as mentioned by others here. We should follow the right way. Allah will forgive the sins we do not know. Try your best to refrain from Haram things.

  19. Mohammed Khafi says:

    @ Tahir,

I agree with you completely Tahir. We must follow what Allah has given us, we must not be led astray by manmade innovations of what is and is not Haram or Halal.

Additionally, only by following Allah’s words can we become stronger in faith, more forgiving of others, more tolerant, and caring. Islam comes from the heart.

    Peace
