Yusuf Lakaseng

Jan 18th, 2007, in News, by

PBR leader Yusuf Lakaseng has been reported to the police for blasphemy against Islam by Zaenal Ma’arif.

Zaenal Ma’arif, the one of the chairman of the Indonesian parliament, was expelled from the Partai Bintang Reformasi (PBR) on 8th January 2007 due to the fact that he had, in late December 2006, took a second wife and thereby become polygamous (see Zaenal Maarif). The expulsion of Zaenal from the Partai Bintang Reformasi was likely based on two factors: fear in the party that his very public polygamy would lose the PBR female votes at the next election, and, Zaenal’s enemies using the matter as an excuse to get rid of him and advance themselves.

Whatever the case the matter looks likely to become a protracted dispute, being fought out in the courts, and on the floor of the parliament (PBR members recently walked out in protest as Zaenal chaired a session of parliament).

On the 17th Zaenal, in company with representatives of a few small Islamic organisations, such as the ewan Dakwah Islamiyah Indonesia and Hizbullah, visited the central Jakarta police station to report the deputy secretary general of the PBR, Yusuf Lakaseng, as having committed blasphemy against Islam, by his opposition to Zaenal having taken another wife.

Zaenal says that Yusuf plans to dismiss all PBR officials across the country who are polygamous and that this move is insulting to Muslims, the Quran, and Islam, given that polygamy is a legitimate practice within religion.

Yusuf Lakaseng was formerly a leader of the left-wing Partai Rakyat Demokratik (PRD) and Zaenal also worries that he is bent on making the PBR a socialist Islamic party rather than just an Islamic one. vhr

Previously at the State Courthouse of South Jakarta, Bursah Zarnubi, another senior PBR leader, was also reported to the police over the same matter by representatives of some Muslim groups, but Zaenal denies being behind this. detik

Looking at what’s happening with all these (excuse my word) foolishness that is happening within our political elite, I just want to recommend to all of you to use your voting rights in 2009 and vote for a better candidate, so that we can have a better representation in the House. A person whose concerns are more about the people than the power of his loin.

    Agree?

  2. 1ndra says:

My opinion, be a political leader = public servant, should not make a poligamy because it makes harder to be fair, because you have one more responsibility.

Maybe we should vote for the single one? 🙂

  3. Achmad Sudarsono says:

In my mind, the PBR do the sin. Having two wives is allowed by the Quran and is do by Prophet Muhammad S.A.W. Is he also wrong ? I don’t think the Prophet Muhammad S.A.W. is wrong.

Friend, polygamy is also natural. It is normal and healthy for man to want more than one woman. It is normal for woman to be faithful to one man. Polygamy helps man to avoid the sin and the zina. The PBR are punishing Mr. Zaenal for avoiding zina ! AstarirAllah ! As for woman, well we have special punishment like in Aceh if she does the zina. But I am not fanatic. I don’t believe in razam – or stoning.

Friends, it is exactly this behaviour which help to cause the natural disaster in Indonesia – living outside of God’s law.

    Thank you, Friend.

  4. 1ndra says:

The poligamy itself isn’t sin, but to deal with wives and people at a time is very difficult as a political is a public voice and servant.

Friend A. Sudarsono, and what about same right for woman to be healthy and to have some men (also to avoid zina)?

Friends, it is exactly this behaviour which help to cause the natural disaster in Indonesia – living outside of God’s law.

Friend A. Sudarsono, I thought it was the westerners or the CIA or the Jews, who caused all the negative ongoings in Indonesia? Like the bird flu?
    🙂

It is natural as well to think that you are just another chauvinistic.

Islam, heheheh hahahahah, I guess sooner or later you guys will have to see it for what it is.

Achmad Sudarsono, you are indeed a Muslim, keep on keeping on, you are right on all count. I guess this is why I said islam should locked in the 7th century.

I guess, Tomaculum will soon call me a name. I am just cracking up with laugther.

    Hi Ismail,

No wonder you have that attitude, FoxNews view of point is as extreme as Sabili.

If you want to compare extremes, then I suggest you google “Camp Jesus”.

  9. Ismail says:

Dimp, I really do feel for you, cause you so have islam on your mind, you trip on conspiracy like most Muslims. Mind-block.

I have simple linked you to a news making rounds in Australia and you had to go that way, why don’t you just read the news and fault it.

Listen sir, to become a real apologist of islam and know your text because right now you do rather poorly in your defence. You read the report above and you still think I need foxnews to hold a view on islam. Sir you just missed it. Wow.

  10. Dimp says:

    Hi Ismail,

You don’t have to feel sorry for me, you are the one who is trying to avoid the issue, again I have no ill feeling against any religion, I am showing you that no matter what religion there will always be people who mis-understood its teaching. I have read the news about this sheiks many times, but I know that he did not represent the whole Moslems community, unlike you, who already generalised the whole Islam as bad because of these bad seeds.

Now I am returning the favour to you, google “Camp Jesus” and tell me if this is right.

I am not defending Islam, I am just worried that Non-Christian in this forum will see Christian as Islam-haters based on your opinions.

But if you cannot see my point then again I truly feel sad.

  11. Ihaknt says:

What Ismail doesnt see is how there are so many Muslims condemning this sheik. But of course Ismail only sees what he wants to see. So consumed with hate and negative energy.

  12. Peter says:

I don’t understand this “reporting people to the police” business. Do fanatic Muslim parties just run around Indonesia “reporting” anything they disagree with to the police? And the police simply obey them and arrest people?

For example, the police surely knew who the editor of Playboy Indonesia was. Why did they not arrest him until he was “reported”, if what he was doing was against the law? Does being “reported” make someone automatically guilty?

How does the law work in Indonesia? Aren’t there very specific criteria which one is to be judged by? Do Muslim parties ever “report” someone to the police, and then hear the police tell them that it’s just too bad because no one broke any law?

I’m sorry, but I live in America, and over here our laws are very specific, and people don’t get arrested simply because somebody “reports” that they did something that they didn’t like. For me this is hard to imagine… None of this nonsense could ever happen where I live!

Perhaps the laws in Indonesia are as vague as the Pancasila..

  13. Ihaknt says:

Money talks here dude…in Indo they like doing it the ‘keroyokan’ way…in English maybe…in a pack? FPI reports people in a pack. they dont do it as individual and they think they are doing the religion a favor for being so ‘clean’ but to many, they’re just hypocrites.

Now that you mentioned you live in the US, just wait, you’re gonna hear all sorts of ‘blame’ coming your way.

  14. Grace and Mercy says:

Peter I agree with you, it shows how messed up the system is down here.

Now as for the rest of the gang, can we get back to the topic of this Zaenal character? A person of that pedigree should not have been elected as co-speaker of the House, so it’s again up to us to make some changes if we want to see Indonesia survives.

Maybe some of you should be running for a political assignment to bring some changes in the our executive/ legislative/ judicial atmosphere.

  15. Achmad Sudarsono says:

    Dear Friends,

We’re getting a bit sidetracked. The point is the Quran sanctions having more than one wife and that it is for the benefit of the woman as well. After I married my Pembantu, for example, my first wife and I were able to cut down on her salary, thus saving costs. So it’s practical as well as halal.

Also – the Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) lived in the 7th century. Why can’t we practice Islam the way he did ? To be fair, I haven’t grown a beard because I can’t find any Gatsby gel that would suit yet and I like to remain ‘gaul.’ But we are Indonesians, not Arabs; we don’t have to practice stoning – we can do caning instead.

    – Tomalcum: your conspiracy theory is very funny ! The CIA doesn’t cause everything – just many things ! This one is out of their evil, manipulative hands.

Peter – how dare you criticise the Pancasila !. All the butir are very clear. This is a classic case of a foreigner (if you are one) trying to attack a beautiful philosophy out of a jealousness of the greatness of Indonesia.

I think until today I have never seen anyone who is actually jealous of the “greatness” of Indonesia. Which part of the “greatness” of Indonesia are you referring to? The rampant corruption? The incompetent government? The stupid people still thinking that still could not differentiate between fiction and non-fiction?

  17. Grace and Mercy says:

Hi guys, I think Achmad is having the last laugh when he sees us irritated by his comments. Silent treatment may work you know.

  18. Mohammed Khafi says:

    Ismail,

“And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.” Luke 6:31 (King James Version)

I wanted to post a verse from your Gospels promoting religious tolerance, but unfortunately couldn’t find one, a good job in that case that most of the Christians I know are promoters of tolerance, there are a small minority like yourself, who do not understand the concept, but I wouldn’t want to paint all my Christian Brothers and Sisters with your coloured understanding of religious faith.

Ismail, If you want to treat an outbreak of disease, you do it on the individual patients who are sick, not on the whole community.

Peace Ismail, I hope that you find it one day.

  19. Andrew says:

    These may be relevant –

Matthew 7:1 Judge not, that ye be not judged.
James 2:4 Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts?
James 2:8 If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well:
James 2:9 But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors.

  21. Peter says:

Peter – how dare you criticise the Pancasila !. All the butir are very clear. This is a classic case of a foreigner (if you are one) trying to attack a beautiful philosophy out of a jealousness of the greatness of Indonesia.

    Adik Achmad,

I never said anything bad about the Pancasila. In fact the only way for Sukarno to mold a unified national consciousness from such disparate groups (Hindus, Muslims, PKI, etc.) was to use such ambiguity and vagueness in the constitution. It is actually quite ingenious. Thank God the Muslim parties were not able to incorporate Shariah law into the constitution..

The framework for a national identity in such a diverse country as Indonesia should necessarily be broad and vague, of course.

But perhaps judicial laws determining proper grounds for arrest should not be. You see?

You know, it’s really quite funny that you are so obsessed with the CIA and think that America is out to get you. You surely must have never been here. Otherwise you would know that most Americans know almost nothing about Indonesia.

Orang Amerika: “Huh? Indonesia? Di mana itu? Di India? Ada “terrorists” di sana? Apa mereka berbuat pakaian kita?”

It sounds like you are just as ignorant about America as most Americans are about Indonesians. What a shame.

The more we know about each other, the better we can get along.

  22. Joy says:

I agree with Grace and Mercy! Achmad is just pulling our legs. Let’s ignore him.

  23. Tomaculum says:

Ismail, yes, you’re right, ha, ha, ha, ha! 🙂
Ismail is what he does and says. Same old naughty boy, like a twin brother of A. Sudarsono. 🙂

    A. Sudarsono,

Tomalcum: your conspiracy theory is very funny ! The CIA doesn’t cause everything – just many things ! This one is out of their evil, manipulative hands.

Okay, let’s laugh together! And why didn’t you call me mBah Tomaculum? Don’t have respect for elders, A. Sudarsono? 🙂

  24. Achmad Sudarsono says:

    Para2 Friend Yth,

Peter: I am happy to get to know you, especially if it will bring you into the light of Islam and wisdom of the Pancasila. Though in the meantime, I hope you stop kvetching about the mashugunah situation over here.

Mbah Tomalcum, Joy, Dimp, and Others: Friend, nice to get to know you and look forward to many meetings in the future. I hope you get a chance to meditate on our discussions.

Just a final thought: a lot of this information comes from my Ustad (who I just met at Jumatan). His mind is untainted because all he reads is the Quran (not Koran); he says all the knowledge we need is ALREADY THERE. Therefore, friends, it cannot be wrong.

    Thanks Friend,

    Mr Sudarsono,

The Pancasila is great, but there’re people who don’t.

Bhinneka Tunggal Ika => Most people who ever in elementary school know.
But know is not the same with do.
We lacked the great Pancasila philosophy realization.

    That’s where the problem is.

  28. Ihaknt says:

    Cuk,

It’s because over there, the victims report the incident and it is recorded. But in many of the mentioned countries, the victims become the party at fault when they report the incident. Or too scared to report it because the system doesnt support them and they are condemned. For example in Arab, if a girl reports she has been raped, then it becomes her fault and she is stoned to death. It’s not fair and that kind of thing would deter the other girls to report it. Plus sometimes the family doesnt support them either, instead they shun them. Many incidents not just a black on white case. So it does happen but girls are just too scared to report it and also the population is huge in the US compare to those many small countries mentioned above so ratio matters.

  29. Dimp says:

    Hi Indra,

And Dimp is peacefull, are you?

Am I peaceful? I tried to avoid violence at any cost, I tried not to hate anyone, but I am still just a mere mortal, I do have emotion and I sometimes do tend to fall to the dark side.

    But I am still learning.

  30. joni rock n roll says:

Although I’m disagree for polygamy but I realise that human right it’s important for life in society. It’s natural for people to choice.

Polygamy is not a reason for somebody to “sing a blues n rock n roll”, don’t ya.
