I was wondering, if its feasible for a non (Indonesian) national to live in Indonesia but work for a American based company.
- I am looking at installing myself into a 3rd shift position (UTC -5 timezone) with the caveat of being able to work remote, of course
- I figure as long as the DSL service is fairly reliable 40 hours of the week I am OK. Bandwidth not an issue since I will be using KVM only.
So technically I am a “retiree.” I am not working in Jakarta, just living there.
- Can I own property(i.e. house, business) as a foreign national?
- Is the cost of living prohibitive i.e. taxes, schools (K-12), medical

This is a grey area, it depends on what type of visa you intend to get.
Can I own property (i.e. house, business) as a foreign national?
No, the only way that I know of is via a PMA company, which is a type of company for foreign investment, you own the company, the company owns…whatever.
Is the cost of living prohibitive i.e. taxes, schools (K-12), medical
As expensive as your desired lifestyle I suppose, international schools are about $20,000 a year if I'm not wrong. Taxes are neglible unless you mean income tax, but that brings up the question of your visa and legal status.

I have to wonder… are you being a trifle optimistic about speed and reliability of broadband service in JKT?
Anyone else care to comment?

Kinch, not the expert here but I notice some of the expat bloggers in Jakarta are forever whining about IM2 broadband, so that is something to consider. I use telkom ordinary service (is it broadband?), no complaints really…

@Patung
I guess the the next step would be to talk to a lawyer regarding the visa. As for my desired lifestyle how about (hypothetically) a three bedroom house in the Taman kebon Jeruk with one car (Kijang or equivalent). My intention is to settle. So I am looking at this long term.
@Kinch
Reliability – maybe. I have only anecdotal experience. I was considering purchasing a 3G plan to act as a backup to the DSL.
Speed - A RDP Session will work with less than 56Kbps plus the overhead (if any) added by encrypting the data packets in a VPN tunnel. I don't expect to do anything other then connect to my computer "at the office."
Thank you both for your feedback.
