Hi guys – I need assistance, can anyone help me with the below? I am an Indonesian citizen living in Sydney since 1984. I studied at UNSW doing Chemical Engineering from 1985. I did five years and failed a couple of subjects in my final year and decided to go back to Indo at the end of 1992. But somehow I have lost my passport, I was 20yr old at the time. I suspected it was stolen from a house I stayed in. But I did not realize until I moved out and needed to leave Oz. Very very scared of the implications and repercussions, I did not bother my parents with this issue and did not report it to the police. My inexperience also did not prompt me to go to Indonesian Embassy at the time. In a moment of confusion and fear, I decided to stay – illegally. I severed contact with my parents, leaving in fear but managed to find some work… I was not ready to face the consequences. Each night I went home I though Immigration will catch me and lock me up at Villawood. But it did not happen, I made a career of myself, concealing my status. Until last night, Ive got Immigration popping into my unit. I had my first meeting with immigration today. The past has finally caught up with me. Fortunately Australian Department of Immigration granted me a bridging visa for a fortnight. But i will need to present an Indo passport for my next meeting. Since the event took place sooooo long ago, and I have lived an aussie life. I am in dire straits. I know that I need a police report. Ive still got my birth certificate, indo family citizenship document. I am thinking of going to the police tomorrow to report my lost passport which happen almost 20 years ago tomorrw. But I also heard that Indonesian government just put out a policy to abandon those who fail to register with an Indo Embassy abroad. Does this mean I cannot get a passport even though I have my birth certificate? My biggest fear – if I am without an Indo passport, and I am rejected by Australian Embassy. I will be stateless – without a country. Can someone please help me with some advice??? I am very very desperate – my life has come to an end this morning – the past finally caught up with you…. somebody please help!!!!!!! Much much appreciated.

Hmm, almost certain that any advice you get on internet forums is not going to be the best…..obviously you're going to need an immigration lawyer. Probably you'll just have to throw yourself on the mercy of the immigration department, I'm sure someone there will advise on the best way to go about approaching the Indonesian authorities in australia.

You'd better get a lawyer, son.
You'd better get a real good one.
