I have recently surveyed the exit polls from LP3ES & LSI and it seems that one common argument among both institutions is that the traditional determinants of voting behavior such as religion and ethnicity are less significant. In fact, Indonesian voters are now prioritizing the economy more. Most of the voters who supported SBY in the presidential elections actually felt that the economy had improved. Was this the overall sentiment in Indonesia during the elections?

Hi Diana, I was a bit suprised at the weak performance of say the PKNU in East Java, that party relied heavily on its claims to being supported by senior NU clerics, but they flopped, even in their heartland around Tuban they got less than 10% I think.

Whether people are prioritising economic issues, not sure, I tend to think people vote based on personalities, they liked SBY, that's why the Demokrats did so well. When SBY is gone, the Demokrats will flop. But I guess a general feeling of things are going ok now, which you could call an economic issue way of looking at it, is influential as well.
