In response to the Jakarta bombings the clued up techno crowd started a Twitter 'movement' called "Indonesia Unite", wthin a day or two the # (hash tag) indonesiaunite reached the number one position on Twitter trends, though when I check now it's 4th

  1. Apollo 11
  2. Goodnight
  3. Harry Potter
  4. indonesiaunite
  5. True Blood
  6. Michael Jackson
  7. HAMMERTIMETV
  8. Entourage
  9. iranelection
  10. RIP Frank McCourt

That is some serious level of traffic to reach number one but I'm struggling to think what the point of it is, other than making people feel like they're doing some good, sort of like wearing ribbons to show 'awareness' about some cause like AIDS or whatever but in reality just wankery that has no effect on anything. And besides I don't like Twitter.

The slogan of the movement is

"KAMI TIDAK TAKUT. We Are Not Afraid. Fight against terrorism! Add red-white overlay to your avatar http://indonesiaunite.com #indonesiaunite"

Here http://twibbon.com/join/IndonesiaUnite. So it is actually like the wearing a ribbon on your shirt, except they want you to wear an Indonesian flag on your avatar….

which comes out as

Yawn, or maybe I'm just cynical….

Twitter, if it's used for your work or business then I can understand, like a lot of internet marketer guys use it religiously, it's for building relationships, making contacts, and if you've got a big bunch of followers and you need some help with something you can just tweet and maybe you'll get a useful answer…

But a lot of what I see there is like

Taking my daughter to school…..it's raining

There's no #, they're not talking to anyone, just giving a running commentary on the boring stuff they do, and even when they are talking to someone, it's often just crap, and it's just too ephemeral for me, I really hate ephemeral, it's gotta last, if possible.
