Heavy blasts took place at JW Mariott Hotel and Ritz Carlton almost at the same time today, Friday, July 17, at 8 am local time. The hotels are adjacent to each other and are situated in a central business district called Mega Kuningan, Jakarta.

I am not a bloody minded guy, but I very much hope the Indonesian government quickly puts these pigs to rest, finally and emphatically.  It's also time for those prominent Islamists that, while not violent themselves, protect JI's leaders and ideologues, to come to grips with the fact that JI want nothing less than the total destruction of Indonesia, that they are evil bastards, and that they sully and disgrace the names of both Indonesia and Islam with every one of their murders.

I do have some faith in SBY and the current government, though it is not unlimited.  Here's hoping they prove that faith warranted and demonstrate that no coward killers–who largely kill other Indonesians–can keep Indonesia off the right path.

Prabowo's past means you probably can't completely rule him out until the perps have been caught or some hard evidence emerges, but I think it's highly unlikely he had anything to do with it.  What would be the point? Can't affect the election result, and because he's likely to run again next time, would potentially damage his long-term plans.

JI is the obvious suspect, and I'm fairly confident that the evidence that will emerge will validate that suspicion.  High time for Indonesia to declare the organization illegal and stop kowtowing to the goat beards that, despite not advocating terrorism, provide intellectual and political cover for its ideologues and operatives.

SBY and the government need to act quickly, to emphatically demonstrate that Indonesia is not and will never be a taliban state.

A quick look in my Facebook account learned that quite a lot of people are put off because Manchester United canceled their scheduled stay in Jakarta's Ritz Carlton and subsequently their match against a Liga Indonesia XI team. No mention on the victims and disapproval on the blasts. Ya.. ampun!!!!!!

………………….. or someone trying to proof something???

I am incline to think in this direction.

1. It happened right after the PILPRES.

2. Mega Kuningan area is the most secure place almost like the Green zone in Bagdhad. And JW Marriot is the most secure (security conscious) hotel in Southeast Asia.

3. Somebody posted a bomb threat to KPK office one day before this blast. Diversion?

In my opinion JI, FPI and those other low life thugs are being used and manipulated due to their own stupidity, in fact they are just the puppets of the Menteng people. They'll never be uprooted as long as they are still useful to the politicians.

That's my Rp. 200,- Cry

Pak Mantri,

Your dot is not complete because there is still other accident as below:

1) Freeport Mine Site Shooting which already killed more than 3 people include foreigner and Police

2) The shooting and killing at Freeport is not likely done by local OPM movement

3) Big deployement Densus 88 to reinforce Freeport Mine Site

4) Please do not forget that since 2003 TNI was only became subcontractor of the Police for big business from securing Freeport Mine Site

5) New  Bomb Marriot is not typical terorist bomb see :

Pakmantri:

1. It happened right after the PILPRES.

Why not before, when it could have potentially changed the outcome of the election?

2. Mega Kuningan area is the most secure place almost like the Green zone in Bagdhad. And JW Marriot is the most secure (security conscious) hotel in Southeast Asia.

The security was designed to stop bombs like the ones in 2003 and 2004, delivered by car and truck.  In order to pull this one off, all you really needed was someone who works in the hotels to bring each piece in a different day, then someone to assemble it on site.  Unfortunately, this is not terribly imaginative, but it still would have gotten through the holes in the security, which were lulled into complacency by the fact that there had been no bombs since 2004 in Jakarta.  I guarantee it's how things happened.

3. Somebody posted a bomb threat to KPK office one day before this blast. Diversion?

How do you know these are related? There are bomb threats all the time in Indonesia, but few actual bombs.  If there was a bombing after every threat to a KPK office, there'd be little of the country left.

Police are saying the bombers checked in as paying guests and assembled the bombs inside.  Basically, they found a chink in the armor.

I remember staying in Ascott Jakarta at the time of the first Marriott bombing. One day not long after, I return from the mall and I'm walking through the lobby and what do I see? Sales lady taking two Stringy-bearded Santri types and one elder ditto to the elevator to check out available room configurations. Incredible, and typical of the kind of unthinking brainless stupidity one encounters amongst the lower echelons. Needless to say I demanded to see the manager and pointed out the unlikelihood that MUI types would want to stay in the Ascott even on a good day for a wide variety of religious/sociological reasons – most of which are blindingly obvious. I pointed out that the obvious next step now that car bombings were getting passe would be to check in and do the deed, rather than driving up in a loaded Kijang.

It's always only been a matter of time before this happened.

No doubt these guys checked in and then brought stuff in day by day disguised as 'shopping'… or perhaps staff brought something in, too. Natural tendency is for hotel security to watch staff more for evidence of pilfering + shake down spa girls for their 'tips', etc…. i.e. they more focussed on what is going out rather than coming in. I'm not a security professional, and this is just stuff I can pull from my posterior without even trying to think about the 'problem' – imagine how easy it must be for a real terrorist with time and motivation and money.

The only way to defeat this is (1) to get your hotel security staff on 'secondment' from Brimob, Kopassus, etc + (2) have well-trained explosives sniffer dogs. No doubt both hotels had (1) sorted as these kinds of organisations no doubt run what amounts to 'protection rackets' anyway but may not have been smart enough to be looking inward as well as outward. As for (2), I'm sure SBY has everything sniffed out in advance wherever he goes, but rest of us have to 'respect Islamic sensibilities' and get by without sniffer dogs. Would be happy to be corrected if in fact Marriott and Ritz used dogs, but can only recall ever seeing these at Dharmawangsa.

Quoted from Time.com :

SBY, as the President is commonly known in Indonesia, also said that radicals had vowed that "there would be a revolution if SBY wins" and that "they wished to turn Indonesia into [a theocracy like] Iran."

Hell no!

Some sideline reporter notes:

1) For all the so called security you see in Jakarta……THEY SUCK! Me and my friends have walked through so many security dtectors with mobile phones (not visible), iPods (not visible) and the damn detectors even beeped and noone said a word or even waved their magic metal wands at us. Furthermore, everything you need to make a pretty awesome bomb can be bought inside the malls so……what's the point of the door security anyway?

2) As per usual Indonesian TV, which sucks without major news, RCTI, METRO, TV7 did not even start reporting the bombing til 1-2hrs after they happened so….THEY SUCK TOO!

3) If there is any finger pointing to be done in this bombing incident which has already dropped 9 spots DOWN in CNN's Top News, it lies with security, their lack of training and the fact that most security in Jakarta are employed to make the national unemployment level look low to the world but they are untrained, unmotivated and numerous members of the esteemed security staff are already members of some shady radical groups already. We have 3 associates who are security or have family members who are security and they laugh about how easy it is to become security and how their family security members are in the FPI.

4) Foreigners don't give a shit about terrorists or bombings anymore. If it happens, it happens. It's a sad state of affairs when the whole radical principal behind bombing has been marginalized in the minds of the targets of those bombings. Terrorists and suicide bombers are no longer the “boogie man” under the bed to foreigners. We have been completely desensitized of this because that's all we have heard about everyday  for 7 years. Time for the radicals to find a new “scary” tactic.

5) The most disgusting thing about the Jakarta bombings WAS the TV NEWS. How insensitive and disrespectful to show what they showed on TV as they sensationalized the crap out of the bombings for their ratings. Showing hurt people, dumb and retarded “eyewitness” interviews, showing the reported suspect w/o even verifying the tape, ……It's no wonder countries like the G7 run the world. This kind of low-level, shit news should be remodified immediately. Showing bloodied and injured foreigners on TV must have made the mouths of future radical groups just water as the major news stations fed them photo and video reel after photo and video reel of the same 4 foreigners injured. Is this NOT what makes them want to bomb in the damn first place? Typical Indonesian ignorance and incompetence for the whole world to see.

6) In a normal society, of which Indonesia continually proves they are not, all gathering places for large groups of people would have been closed. BUT NOT JAKARTA! No, the greedy people of Jakarta left all the malls open which, were full! Another example of how human safety is a back-door priority to profits.

7) The mall security DID have 2 hours of awesome security details and thorough checks. By noon, BACK TO NORMAL. Waving their magic “metal wands” at a closed car door and sending cars through. What a laugher! The average, first time terrorist could drive 20 pounds of C4 packed in their car bumper and NOONE would catch it.

END RESULT………..These bombings and future bombings could have and can be stopped before they even happened but…, due to  an incompetent, greedy and corrupt society, these bombings and other unnecessary and stoppable human tragedies will continue in Indonesia. Terrorism is a societal issue and can only be stopped by the community. When a community is so focused on their individual selves, does absolutely NOTHING to improve their own neighborhoods and continues to “keep their mouths shut” because they honestly believe they are being culturally correct, than bad things happen. It is time for Indonesian people to wake up and smell the coffee! Take control of your country and get rid of these post Soeharto cronies you keep electing to high level office. They have done NOTHING to help you and they continue to steal your birthright everyday while allowing anyone and their Grandma to embarass you on the international forum. 911 happened 8 years ago. NOT ONE SINGLE INCIDENT HAS OCCURED IN THE USA SINCE. What is your countries excuse?

God Bless those who were injured, killed or psychologically effected by the recent bombings in Jakarta. It is saddening you had to live through that experience and it is deserved by noone to have to have that happen in their life.
