in the meantime i am getting deeper and deeper into jaipong. names like upit sarimanah. titim fatimah, neneng fitri, hadji hadjidjah, gugum gumbira and his jugula studio's…. the weird thing, when i try to find info via the net about a lot of these singers you never find more than a date of birth, maybe the date when they passed on…
anyways, in kota kembang, the pirated dd/cd center in bandung close to alun alun is selling jaipong music and video's again, lots of it! so i guess this whole weird story about jaipong getting banned will be over soon…

jep there's all sorts of jaipong, i'm not much for the dang dut/jaipong mix thing although sometimes you'll hear beautiful stuff there too…
right now i'm trying to find out about upit sarimanah and titim fatimah, they both made some incredible music back in the 50's till the 70's, sundanese traditional music, they were among the bigger names but somehow i cannot find any info about them other than references, birthdates and the dates when they passed away… you can ask anybody and they will know their names in west java yet no info on the net, weird….
and just to hear how amazing their music and singing is:

yeah i've seen that it';s like the only thing you'll find, so weird, upit sarimanah and titim fatimah were among the biggest names in the 50's and 60's, they were very famous sinden or female singers with some of the biggest dalangs around. you would expect a bit more info on their personal lives and stuff….
and yes i love that pelita picture too, it's very down to earth

well i'm starting to think about finding info about titim fatimah and upit sarimanah myself, will go to ISTI university for starters and visit the famous jugala studio's in kopo, bandung… i find it interesting that two people can be so famous and at the same time so forgotten…
there's something salma hayekish about this picture isn't it?

I suggest you also watch some wayang golek. I'm not sure about the other puppet shows, but golek uses jaipongan music.
It's on good old YouTube. One show even carries a line from "Daun Pulus…"
