I went to Thailand once. From Krabi, Phuket, Bangkok and last Chiang Mai.

I think overall Thailand just like Indonesia, Bangkok just almost same liek Jakarta.. well.. they do have MRT and sky walk.. they just much better than Indonesia about tourism.

What i like the most is when i went to Krabi and Phuket, oh God.. they have the most georgeus islands and sea that i ever seen !

I love snorkeling since i was in University. But this is nothing like i ever seen before. Blue clear water....

No garbage.. and the white sandy beach.. no glass or broken bottle !

I think indonesian people way to be spoiled, and gifted with so much bless... if some people here could really see what those dirty beach could turn into (money for sure)..

We could beat Thailand in tourism.... (too much to ask ?)

Hmmm.... if Bangkok is just like Jakarta, why is it that office buildings in Bangkok don't need to be inside fortified compounds?

As for having Skytrain and Subway - would you seriously go into a hole in the ground together with the general public in Jakarta?

I thought not.

Human capital, my dear. Human capital.

Bangkok certainly has its problems, but one thing which amazes me is the number of Indonesians who can go visit Bkk, KL, let alone Singapore and *just not get it*.

Jakarta is a third world shit hole. I happen to love it anyway... but let's be honest about what it is. Bangkok and KL are a cut above that, and of course Singapore is truly First World - no matter what else one might say about those kiasu micro floppies.

Regarding tourism. Sorry to be so blunt, but the elephant in the room (as it so often is) is Islam. Take a look at Indonesian or Malaysian tourism TV commercials. Funny how the dominant cultural meme of both nations doesn't appear in a 45 second slot which shows just about every other thing but the kitchen sink.

well.. for sure.. its not that difficult with air asia flights as well as tiger airways. my fave flight for budget traveling.

Its not as difficult as if you are planning to go to jakarta for sure..

Last two weeks to go to jakarta back and forward i spent Rp 1.190.000,- just for flight ticket.

To go to Thailand from singapore my flight could get much cheaper or close to that.

Why i would want to go to Jakarta which is still indonesia, when i could travel abroad and met "more civilize" people with broadminded ?

Yeah.. they beyond Jakarta (remeber the bkk airport..comparing to flooded sukarno-hatta)

the ads eh? hmmmmmm...

Well on a good day, the new airport in BKK is a lot better than CGK :) - apart from shitty arrivals waiting area with no space. To be fair, CGK is actually quite attractive airside with the gardens between walkways.

Can you fly direct to Vientiane from SG? I'm pretty sure Air Asia do so from KL. Vientiane is cute friendly little city full of diplomats and NGO Wankers - which means it has really good pizza and baguettes and coffee. Amusingly, it's illegal for foreigners to bonk Laotian females they are not married to.... so you could walk around with a 'I am Indonesian' sign and not have to pay for any food or drinks :D

Kinch seems to spend a lot of effort telling Indonesians that they are uncivilised. Respectfully, I don't agree. I have traveled to Bkk, KL and Singapore. I have also lived and worked, at various times and for varying durations in these cities. You will find things to like and thingsto abhor in all 4.

While I appreciated Singapore's orderliness and modcons, you will find Singaporeans generally blunt and have no time to appreciate culture or natural beauty. I do not equate tall buildings with civilisation.

BKK and Jakarta, as you point out, are ALIVE and kicking, their citizens always adventurous and looking for new experiences. You will also find JKT and BKK more spiritual and caring.. truly.

Malaysians are a more mixed breed. Always coming second best to their Singaporean cousins, they have a chip on their shoulder and strive to be as first world as their Southern neighbours.  They sometimes fail as they try to reconcile their desire for modernity with their Islamic roots.

I accept that these are generalisations, but to characterise Indonesians as uncivilised is just wrong. Have been in a traffic jam in Orchard Rd, Sultan Ismail and Sukhumvit .

Been searched before entering the Hyatt Erawan, Mandarin Hotel, as well as the Ritz Carlton, KL.

What matters are its people. I have found Indonesians to be as caring as KLites, as fun loving as Bangkokians and as intelligent as Singaporeans.

Perhaps K should see more of Indonesia... you might not think it is such a "shithole" after all.

Hary, I think you are over-reacting slightly. I do  not consider Indonesia to be a shit hole - in fact I'm rather fond of the place. But Jakarta certainly *is* a shit hole. An entertaining and lively and fun shit hole, but still a shit hole.

I fail to see how calling a spade a spade re Jakarta being Kota Shit Hole implies anything about the actual Indonesian people per se - many of whom are indeed very nice and good to hang out with.

I don't recall saying anything extremely complimentary about Singapore - nice place to visit, but I certainly wouldn't want to live there. In fact the kindest thing I can say about SG is it's the one place in the world where you can eat good Indian food secure in the knowledge that you won't be departing this earth with perforated bowel 3 days later :D . Those hygiene laws are worth something.

As for being civilized. I don't think Indonesia is very civilized in the sense of being a well-ordered safe society. What it *does* still possess to some degree is a level of grace and  hospitality at the very personal or local household or neighbourhood level which has been lost in the West. This, when one encounters it is very 'civilized' and is a good thing. However, nobody could look at (say) the inhabitants of Jakarta in the mass going about their daily business and call them civilized.

And by any objective measure, BKK and KL *are* more pleasant places to live (discounting the issue of one being native to one of these three cities, since I am not) - e.g. walk down a street, drive in traffic, shower with non funny coloured 'water' coming out the tap, etc... than Jakarta.

As an extreme illustration, one could say that Pashtun tribesmen have very refined codes of hospitality and are unfailingly civilized and  charming with house guests (males only, by definition). They are also totally and utterly savage and uncivilized in the broader sense though.

We could argue this topic at length, to little avail. But I hope you realise now that I'm just a teeny bit more nuanced than you might have thought. And yes, that's probably my fault since I was perhaps rather less than subtle and nuanced in my original statement.

Just read your excellent reply. Now that you have taken pains to be less subtle and more nuanced, you are right that living in Kl was more pleasant than Jakarta.

Still not quite a shithole though, perhaps you should consider moving to nicer accomodation.

I will concede that Bangalore is more of a shit hole than Jakarta :) .

As for standard of accommodation, the worst/cheapest accommodation I've ever inhabited in Jakarta was the Ascott in Jl. Kebon Kacang Raya... not really a slum - although some of the surrounding Kampungs leave a bit to be desired.

Subtle and nuanced person that I am, I'm seriously considering moving back to this lovely shit hole as am finding Bangkok way too boring and stultifying. Guess I'll wait until the Banjir Season is over - also the weather is amazingly cool and wonderful in Bkk right now - should enjoy it while it lasts before hitting the eject button.

The most beautiful beach and coral reef is in east of Indonesia.

If you been to East of Indonesia, you would say ...

Thailand is not so beautiful ..

But I like thailand as well , and still Indonesia is the best for the beach and coral reefs as I am an Indonesian :)

I think what i meant is... not only the best beach and coral reef.. maybe also tourist facility. Most of people say they are pretty especially in Raja Ampat.

But its just because its rarely visited and less tourist, could say its a "virgin" dive site. Sure we could find pretty amazing "virgin" dive site in these world. But the well maintained one ?

Look at bunaken these days ?(uppss never been there) i read lots of blogs where people said (tourist too) theres many garbage that other tourist left like pastic wrap and bottles made the coral die, and the sea floor is dirty. Its not what its looks like 5 years ago. Thats what i read online.

Also...

Its cheaper for me to go to thailand rather than go to eat of indonesia.

My flight from sumatra one way already cost around Rp 700,000,- to jakarta, and from jakarta i should go to (bali maybe?) province near the beach that would cost more than Rp 500,000,- one way.

So one way already cost more than a million ruphs.

I got return ticket from Riau-Malaysia-Phuket-Singapore-Riau only 1.7 million rupiahs.

And also accomodation just another story. Where in indonesia you could get cheap accomodation with hot water, clean, and just comfy ? below Rp 100,000,-?

I read theres many more people went to other SE Asia countries blogs rather than diving blogs in east of indonesia. Only several people have that (because the high cost !).

Its not that i don't want to promote indonesia, but i just telling you the fact as well as you're telling me the true fact too... its just FYI Cool

Yupe, you are right.

Thailand is pretty cheap as I stayed for 10 days there and spent only about 3million rupiah, tickets included in 2005 via singapore as I live on batam island.

It was great as well as I am a female single traveller  and travel alone most of the time and wondered why in other country I would prefer to go out till morning without feel unsecured.

I went to east of Indonesia -  komodo island in 2006 and it costed us about 10 million rupiah per person for 1 week.

But still, i would say .. I love my country and proud being an Indonesian , even for the rest of my live I went to jakarta only for 5 times LOL

if you had visited pattaya, you may bump into american army types doing r & r, some three times the size of an average asian.

best place for live music in bangkok will be soi cowboy (something a little bit more exciting tham block M), at the back of the sleazy topless bar filled to the brim with japanese and germans. follow your ears and you may hear Led zep and Lynard skynard. If you buy some beers for the band members, they may ask you to jam along with them.

its a pity that the thais cannot solve the muslim insurgency problem in the south. hatyai used to be very busy during the weekends with tourist from malaysia and singapore. There used to be direct flights there from KL until an explosion at the airport two years ago. Only way to hatyai today is by road and rail.

bangkok airport is the busiest in asean. not surprising as tourism is a big industry there. It was the Thais who invented visit Thai year way back in the nineties, only to be copied by others.

hotel accomodation cost more in indonesia  than in thailand or malaysia. The tourism sector should split indonesia into areas of speciality instead as indonesian natural beauty is diverse and cover a vast area.

Lake toba/sabang/aceh west coast/niah island could be promoted as an area for tourists coming into malaysia and south thailand could extend their stay, as there are almost eight flights a day between penang and medan, either by jet or turbo-prop, which is also well conected to phuket and hatyai, the largest town in south thailand

There are also numerous ferry services between peninsular malaysia and sumatra.

similarly, manado could be promoted by offering a direct flight from kota kinabalu, which just happens to be malaysia's second busiest airport and second major tourist destination after KL /genting, as kk attracts similar tourist as those who visit manado. from kk, you get direct flights to japan/korea/taiwan/macao/hong kong/ singapore/brunei/shenzhen apart from other malaysian domestic flights.

Soi Cowboy is ok , I walked with my swiss friend who also my friend in Indonesia as we met by coincident in BKK.

As He is a jewish .. it is not really easy to get the meals for him, so we went to turkish or arabian restaurant just infront of soi cowboy.

But even in the afternoon , soi cowboy is a busy area.

I went to pubs area which many nude bars around where I couldnt see any in indonesia :) , if i am not wrong the one that near to japanese area .. not far from Shangrila hotel in BKK. It was in Nov 2005

Yes, No more direct flight to hatyai as last august i flew to hatyai from bangkok in August 2008 ( Tiger airways had flight schedule from Singapore to Hatyai before ) but the road really quiet and I was stayed in other city named Songkhla about 1 hour drive from Hatyai and I was really liked Songkhla even there is no big mall there only some weekend markets and small shops.

I was with my aussie boss walked around the city and none bother us by asked us about taxi or offer anything ( the plus point of thailand because too many foreigner go there .. so they will leave the foreigner alone )

And in the evening we went out with our Thai crews to some pubs and they treated us really good, and you are right about buy drinks to the band member as we did that and we spent great evening together.

North Sumatera is great place as I worked for gold mining company in South Tapanuli and stayed at the camp which it just next to the jungle which it still so natural and so beautiful.

Flew several times on top of Lake Toba and was just said "WOW" because of what i seen from the sky.

Still hoping to back to South Tapanuli when the project start again.

near Shangrila will be the fabled Pat-pong. Those who are not knowledgable enough may end up booking a girl that is actually a man. And she may beat you up if paid less than what she expects.

Thai youngsters are crazy. They drink whiskey with their steaks.

Songkhkla is just north of the troubled zone. You can get a ferry to the island of Koh Samui where the fabled "moon light party" was invented and copied the world over. That is another island you should visit. Water as good if not better than Phuket due to white sandy beach, simlar to those found in Kudat in the norhern tip of the state of sabah in east Malaysia.

The whole southern thailand economy is wrecked by the insurgency. Those with rubber estate cannot/farms cannot work on their land as they may be killed, whether buddhist or muslims or anyone else. Tourist hotels are targeted for bombings in popular weekend destinations for malaysian like Sungai golok and hatyai and several Malaysian tourist have been caught in the crossfire. With the coming long holidays for the chinese new year, the insurgents have bombed the Thai custom checkpoint at sungai golok just to make a point to Malaysian from enjoying their holiday there.

The aceh province could have ended up this way had it not been for the catastrophic tsunami. Even then, it seems the acehnese have not learnt their lesson and are  promoting God's laws written by humans.

May I ask what minerals are there in south tapanuli? Just curious.

Patpong is close to the Royal Orchird Hotel, not Shanggrila. Anyway, Patpong has a lively nightmarket so its fun walking around buying fake Rolex's and cheap T shirts ( if thats your thing). You can peek at the go go girls in the bar if you like without actually going in. Good for a laugh. Soi Koboi is way too raunchy.

My favourite Museum is the Jim Thompson house. Small but well organised conducted tours. Its a short taxi ride from Mabunkhrong.

If you want killer Tomyam, there's a restaurant called Baan Khun Mer ( My mother's house) just outside the entrance of the Novotel Siam Square. Ask the hotel concierge for directions.  You will also find the original Lemon Grass restaurant in Sukhumvit Soi 23 opposite the taxi stand of shopping arcade.

And of course, nothing beats Chatuchak market on the weekend. My guests always planned to spend the whole morning there and end up coming back at 9pm with koper baru filled with shopping.

If you end up in Phuket, consider staying on Phi Phi Island. Glorious beaches. Give Patong a miss, Kuta is a lot better.

When it comes to the people, the Thai and the Indonesian are rather similar, very hospitable i should say. I personally think Bangkok is cheaper place to live compared to JKT. Travelling is made easy in Thailand, they have a good transportation system. I have never live in JKT, so i can't say much.

I personally wouldn't want to live in Bangkok nor JKT. KL is liveable and has more variety of everything. All in all, i personally would still prefer Penang, Island of Malaysia as my retirement place :)

Bangkok is dirty but interesting for a couple of days.

The south of the country, away from the crowds and the tourists, is wonderful.

Go into Sulawesi, South of Manado to Ratatotok ( Minahasa) You want to see beutiful beaches, Off the coast a few kilometers there are some small islands with the cleanest white sandy beaches you can find at any well known tourist destinstion, These are the places that Indonesia should be touting on the tourist market, And with none of the bars and or prostitutes ( sorry fellas ) in fact the islands are in most cases only inhabitated by a few local fisherman.
