   In 1948 wrote Hella S. Haasse Oeroeg the book based on her own experiences during her childhood in the Dutch East Indies. This book formed the basis for this film. The story is about a complicated friendship between John, son of a Dutch plantation owner and the Indonesian Oeroeg, son of an overseer. As children they were inseparable, but when John during the police actions in Batavia returns shows how much has changed.
   Although there have been made are many documentaries , Oeroeg is the only film that specifically deals with the struggle for independence from Indonesia.
