February 1st, 2010 at 1:12 pmYou know what? I once attended a ceramah agama . The spoke person is Mr. Quraish Shihab. In the question and answer session, someone asked him about one of his daughter who does not wear jilbab/hijab.
“You’ve had explained about the norms of Islam, but why is there one of your daughter not wearing jilbab/hijab?” asked the woman.
Mr. Quraish Shihab giggles for a few sec, then asked back, “My honourable moslem fellow, what do you think a jilbab is?”
The woman fell in silence for quiet a moment, and before she found the answer, Mr.Quraish Shihab asked another Qs, “Is the thing you’re wearing on your head a jilbab/hijab?”
The woman answered right away, “Yes..” she said.
“No, my sister. It is not. It is only a veil, for I can still see your hair beneath it,” he said. “Veil only covers your body, while jilbab/hijab covers your body and beautify your heart. Wearing a jilbab/hijab is a big responsibility. If my daughter wears jilbab/hijab, then she must be preapared to wear it in an apropriate way based on syariat. Therefore, I would be very happy if she wore a jilbab/hijab in her (heart) first” he continued..
My point is… Isnt it better to have beautiful heart first, straighten our Islamic soul first, doing good things to other first, rather than messing around with how we look and how many opposite gender we touch? Isnt ALLAH more concerned about how we act after the prayers/shalat than the prayers/shalat itself?Our religion, Islam, is a beautiful religion. It respect human rights. It has a modern way of thinking. And it can unify every difference. So please, dont create wrong impressions of this beautiful religion. Dont make ppl judge us, dont make it worse. make ppl interested in our religion, make them understand how it really is. Havent you ppl get sick of being misjudged?

Yes, but then that negates the need to even have special Islamic apparel! If beautiful heart is all that matters, why all the rules about clothing and appearance? If you have to look beyond the physical appearance of somebody, how about making a start by removing impediments (such as extra clothing) to this spiritual goal?
Secondly, why is it only women who are singled out for the headscarf treatment? If it is for the woman’s benefit to wear such clothing, it should be a stipulation that men do the same thing! That is, if it really is all about what is inside that counts?
Do you see the contradiction here? If the inside is what counts, why the big deal about the outside? What are they not telling you?

copyproof was trying to make an expression what she felt of being moslem but yet treated not like it.she mentioned that islam is true peaceful religion and yet action through action she had from fellow moslem is not a peaceful thoughts. it was a nightmare and torture. a bondage to a freeman soul. if your religion is so called peaceful religion, why not teach peace and how to get it without being harsh to condemn those who run opposite way?

But I just got the impression that u suggest us, all moslem women, to wear hijab/jilbab, is it not?Well. I want to wear jilbab, actually. Just not now. lol.

These kind of rule (ones about wht may and may not be done with our hairs, forbidding a job, etc) give ppl wrong impressions of our religions. It make ppl think of Islam as a retarded (if it really is the suitable word) religion. While, it’s not. In my eyes, Islam is so modern, so beautiful, and very very appreciate diffrences.
In that case, why bother praying at all?
Why not just meditate and train your mind into becoming a better person, if your deeds are all that matter?As for this one.. What I’m trying to say is that it will be a waste for ppl to do all their prayers but still doing bad things afterward. So wht’s the most important, in my opinion, is we do our prayers to communicate with our GOD (it really feels comfortable, every time we pray. it feels so good and peacefull) and do good deeds afterwards. Dont you agree?

Yes, I don’t understand why Muslims do that to each other either. Makes no sense to me.
I just think this issue is basically centered around how women were treated in Saudi Arabia in the early days of Islam. What has happened (I think), is that the ownership of women as concubines and slaves (it is widely known that Prophet Mohammed had several himself), has been uplifted to the status of The Word of God, and the correct way to relate to women. Also, Arabic dress (suitable for desert environments) has been decreed as a religious uniform in places where it makes no sense to dress like a desert dweller (like in the middle of Indonesia)!
Some people would even call it Arabic Cultural imperialism… which is really no better than American cultural imperialism! Anyway, soon we may all be getting Chinese cultural imperialism, and I’m not looking forward to that!

On a related note,.. I’ve always wondered about the relationship between Indonesia and Saudi Arabia. It seems that the Indonesians feel that the Arabs are brothers in Islam, and yet the Saudis seem to have little respect for Indonesians. Even the strains of Islam are very VERY different. The Saudi’s are wrapped in up their fundamentalist dogmatic Wahabbi Islam (which I think has twisted the Quran the wrong way), which is quite opposed to the more moderate and reasonable Islam in Indonesia.

I do think that it’s important for women to dress in a way that they feel comfortable, so that men treat them as human beings and not as sex objects.
Already what we see in the west and in other non-western countries, is that scantily clad women are used by companies and slick marketers to target young men in advertising… trying to create an illusion that one cannot be with a beautiful woman unless he buys certain items, or lives a certain lifestyle.
It’s completely the wrong message to send…. but captialism only cares about profit, and not about moralizing society. -

my sincere apology if i went quite far before your last post. i must say that i’m not moslem and not a anti-moslem too. I’m a man anti-hipocracy. i live my life share my yard to mosque so ummat can park their bikes before shalat.it’s happen to our country that since islam become a majority, then they thought it would be good to turn the ideology to islam to make a better way of living… questions… to who?
not every Moslem’s agree syariah as it happen in Arab. look at Saudi Arabian, look at Turkey, look at Iran, look at many other moslem country. take a good lesson… have you ever seen something good comes out from violence? or have you ever seen something good come out from freedom of being who they are?
