   My assessment is she only paid a diplomatic courtesy visit to Indonesia because her boss spent a couple of years here when he was a child.
   Keeping up appearances is one of the major tasks of a politician.

   Funnily enough, Bill Clinton is regarded as a hero in Aceh, so I imagine Hillary would be very highly regarded, too. At least if she was recognised.

   Aceh must be the only place in the world where a village (Lampu’uk) has a mosque sitting on “Jalan Clinton dan Bush”.

   I hate when they do that. Bunching everyone into the same thing.
   Indonesian people are NOT the same as Arab people or Pakistani people, the comparison is annoying, but its as if they are trying to push some “islamic” identity.

   The reason muslim religion, democracy, modernity and women’s rights can coexist in a place like indonesia, is because of the cultures and philosophies that the country is founded on.
   That is why it is SO important to protect those cultures and philosophies, above all else.
   For instance, Javanese people dont have an islamic culture…..They have a Javanese Culture.

   That’s problem with bules who have a shallow understanding, they dont recognize that. They just wind up pushing, muslim is muslim, you’re muslim, they’re muslim, you’re all muslim from Morocco to Mindanao, therefor that’s your culture (by that they usually mean arab).
   The worst part is, the more its pushed, the more people start falling into it, then next thing ya know ya got some girl in east Java wearing an Abaya because she thinks its her culture.

   Oh well, maybe it will go in reverse, one day there will be a world wide caliphate….but there will be a Javanese farmer from a desa near Magelang in charge of it. Wouldnt that be cool? Ukuleles and Kebaya for Saudi Arabia, hooray.

   Did Clinton even mention Pancasila?

   True but the problem also lies in Islam itself. What other ideology demands you understand its holy book in Arabic, to conduct its prayers in Arabic, an alien Semitic desert language?

    @ Patung.. I read that in Bekasi they’re making ALL school girls wear the Abaya, even the Christian ones, this is getting ridiculous.

    DS, I’d forgotten about this before but it does bear out what you say

    Professor Taspinar…. places most of the blame on Washington’s portrayal of Turkey as a paragon of the “moderate Islam” it wants to sell to the rest of the Muslim world.

    Says the Americans have been doing their level best to undermine the secularists in Turkey and cosy up to the Islamists, because for some reason they need/want moderate Muslim friends….

    Why does Turkey hate America?
