@ BS: Well, I am fortunate to have about 90 Facebook friends in Indonesia now so I am not going to be alone when I arrive. I am sure they will look after me very well indeed.

I need to study my bahasa more each day though that will be a key for me as well I think. Being comfortable with a native language must be a good thing.

So, how widely used is Bahasa Indonesia? If you go through Sumatera for example, is is widely used?

@ Brian: So how do you know if these backpackers are German, do they march down the road doing the nazi goosestep? Lol! :)

    @Adam
Sounds like you’ve thoroughly prepared yourself. Don’t worry about bahasa Indonesia. Although use of local languages can be the norm in some places, all women seem to watch sinetron (which is in bahasa Indonesia). I think the national exams are in Indonesian too.

You biggest problem will likely be switching from formal to colloquial language (using ‘bicara’ instead of ‘berbicara’, ‘aku’ instead of ‘saya’, etc.).

    Ok,

This may seem like a stupid question (or two) and you all may think it is, but hey, I have been married for 20 years and out of the dating game.

So, when I get to Indonesia and decide I like someone, is there any difference to in Aus. Should I just say, would you like to go for a coffee and a chat? That sought of thing and see how it goes?

I of course don’t want to do anything wrong by being to forward or disrespectful.

    @ Adam

So, how widely used is Bahasa Indonesia? If you go through Sumatera for example, is is widely used?

Bahasa Indonesia from malay language its from Sumatra. Yes we use it daily, so you shouldn’t be afraid. We do have certain local language, every region had it. Like in North Sumatra, you will find more than 2 local language dialect. Its completely different from one another. But no worries, most of sumatra use indonesian language :)

And yes, its a good thing if you would involving her in most of your time. Yahh almost the same like anywhere else in the world. Just ask more politely, and ask more than once ok ? :) we are eastern we are tend to be “more shy” to answer directly at first hahahaha….

Happy New Year to everyone here !!

You biggest problem will likely be switching from formal to colloquial language (using ‘bicara’ instead of ‘berbicara’, ‘aku’ instead of ’saya’, etc.).

That will be the basic level.
For the intermediate level, you will have to use ‘ngomong’ instead of ‘bicara’ and ‘gue’ instead of ‘aku’.
For the advanced level, you will have to use ‘ngemeng’ instead of ‘ngomong’ and ‘akika’ instead of ‘gue’
Sorry Adam, don’t take it seriously, I just love the diversity of bahasa Indonesia ;-) .

    Betul, Riniss

    The usage example:
Ngemeng-ngemeng, liburan indang kawanua mawar jali-jali kemindang? Titi Dj…
Meaning: By the way, where are you going this holiday? Take care…

Ahh.. I reckon we just make Adam more confused… have to stop now :D

    Hi Adam,

Looking back to one of your posts about any difference in the dating game in Indo to here. I think a smile and hello will help and just ask if the person you like wants to go out and eat etc. Indonesian women are quite open, friendly and will enjoy having a chat and will let you know if they like you or not.

Good luck from a fellow ex pusser.

  20. Adam Says:
    January 1st, 2010 at 5:31 pm

    Thanks Laurence,

yes it seems simple enough so I look forward to the experience when I finally arrive there sometime this year.

    Cheers

What is an acceptable age gap between couples in Indonesia???

  24. bs Says:
    January 2nd, 2010 at 1:09 am

In Indonesia, that generally depends on your wealth.

But if you follow the standard creepiness rule: your age divided by two, plus seven ;-)

    See http://www.xkcd.com/314

bs, possible after using your equation, a prime number is obtained? would be great. i love prime number…

  26. Endy Says:
    January 2nd, 2010 at 6:56 am

There is no such a thing called acceptable age gap in Indonesia…..girls married their man not even thinking about the age gap.

Until one day they started to wonder how it feels to be with a younger man…..

  27. Adam Says:
    January 2nd, 2010 at 7:21 am

So bs, the wealth thing, is that known as the ‘Hugh Hefner Factor’? Lol!

I seriously need to rethink my equations then, I was being generous I thought by dividing by 5 and multiplying by 4. IE: 52/5*4= 42.

    Your figures of 52/2+7= 32

This therefore cheers my up considerably, thanks BS,

    have a great day! :)

  28. sanctuary Says:
    January 2nd, 2010 at 7:36 am

hug hefner? lol.. make it karl lagerfeld, and she hates fat girls even more.. LOL..

don’t comment too often here, adam.. otherwise, you start becoming popular.. hohohoho..

  29. Adam Says:
    January 2nd, 2010 at 9:38 am

    @ Endy

Yes good point so it is important to make sure you treat your girl well then so she does not wander! haha

    @ Sanctuary

haha, I will be happy to talk to anyone, as long as they are honest and not out to exploit anyone. :)

  30. Swagman Says:
    January 2nd, 2010 at 10:12 am

    @ Adam

Not sure about your maths there mate. Lucky Indo girls can’t count real well!

    @ Adam

Now you tell us you want honestly and no exploitation? Now that sheds a whole new light on things. I’ve never come across that before and I reckon you won’t get either with that equation. :)
