Bangkok Pundit

April 12th, 2006, in News, by Patung

Bangkok Pundit is a current affairs blog that deals with issues in southern Thailand.

Southern Thailand, as is widely known, is plagued by sectarian tensions and violence, one of the “bloody borders of Islam” a la Samuel Huntington, and hence is of interest to students of Indonesian Islam.

The Bangkok Pundit’s most interesting post of late concerns the situation in the southern Philippines, specifically the granting of limited autonomy to the majority Muslim areas of the country in the form of the “Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM)” and the implications of this experience for similar measures proposed in the Muslim area of Thailand.

He lists three main problems in the southern Philippines:

  • Only some militant groups support the ARMM
  • A new minority was created, Christians
  • Fighting goes on
  • All in all a very well researched piece.

Thanks for the link. If only I had more time, I would post more articles/posts like that.

The article you link to sat as a draft article for 2 months before I decided just to publish it as is.

Thanks for the link. I’m interested in moving over to the Philipines for a few months and it’s great to get the low down. May have to start a new site as my current one is geared towards Thailand.
