Sad indeed. I never could have imagined this religiously inspired sexual complex to be so deeply rooted that it might turn to violence. Although in the case of Lady Gaga part of the hype may be traced back to racial and anti-western issues, it is certainly not the only reason. Once I posted a video on YouTube showing a Joged performance – mind you, a typical and popular Indonesian/Balinese cultural, and in this case pure local, event – which jokingly mimicked and mocked some sexual behavior, but certainly nothing lewd. Although the video got an overwhelming number of thumbs up, a lot of the comments to it are downright filled with hysterical hatred. I myself got several death threats – most of which now seem to be moderated away from the comments section – but one of the last comments is no doubt characteristic of what is living in the minds of some of the followers of the ‘Religion of Peace’:

But like you said, does the world care? Nope, not a bit.

Anyway, she missed her opportunity to make a statement to the world that being free to choose is worth risking your life for as many of her countrymen have done on this Memorial Day.

Actually, I did attend mid-night mass on Christmas Eve during 2003 despite the bombing threats and many of my friends in Jakarta warning me not to go. Actually, my first impulse was not to go but i watched on the local news a woman who said she would be there because we couldn’t allow the Muslim terrorist to take our freedom of worship away so you see I was shamed into it. Believe me I spent the first 30 minutes in extreme fear so it want about being very brave but it was about standing up when it counted.

Jokowi’s only comment on the record so far was a non-comment:
He declined to comment on the controversy over US pop diva Lady Gaga’s concert, because he was “more into Metallica, Judas Priest or Lamb of God” and was thinking of bringing them to the country for gigs.

About FPI and other so called god’s fans club organisations… I’m more into questioning where is Mr President and his Ministries. I’m more into questioning where is the law? How can such an organization control the whole country. The other questions are, where is pancasila? Where is the bhinneka tunggal ika? Do we really need a government which can be controlled by anarchy, a small amount of radical people? The deeper question is why are we seem to be so afraid of that small amount of radical idiots? Even the police force, all of them? How sad…… We’ve had enough of this. It’s such ashamed what happened in cikeusik, irshad manji, and other stupid stuff they did, and their little tiny hypocrite mind makes me wanna puke. All the brainwash. We are so sick of this. Some people have become apathetic, that’s even worse…… I hope we won’t lose the faith to keep fighting bringing back our Pancasila and Bhinneka Tunggal Ika.

Cannibal Corpse are a very “confronting” band. I would love to attend their performance, just to see the Indonesian Death Metal scene with my own eyes. This is about as far from traditional religious values (any religion) as one could go. (Though maybe the death and suffering themes will appeal to the FPI ?)
