Film Ayat Ayat Cinta

Mar 10th, 2008, in News, by

The Islamic romance film “Ayat Ayat Cinta”, political Islam, and pesantren prodigies.

The wildly popular novel by Habiburrahman El-Shirazy (download PDF), and now film, Ayat Ayat Cinta (Love Verses), tells the story of young handsome Fahri bin Abdullah Shiddiq (played by Fedi Nuril), an Indonesian student attending Al-Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt, who attracts beautiful young women left, right, and centre, four of them in fact:

  • Nurul (played by Melanie Putria), also an Indonesian in Egypt, the daughter of an important East Java kyai.
  • Noura (Zaskia Adya Mecca), an ungrateful Egyptian girl (Fahri saves her life but she betrays him later).
  • Maria (Carissa Putri) a Coptic Christian living next door to Fahri, who inexplicably converts to Islam at the end of the film.
  • Aisha (Rianti Cartwright), from a wealthy German-Arab family.

In the end Fahri plumps for the rich girl Aisha and they no doubt live happily ever after.

The book and film have been taken up by some on the Islamist side of politics, including parliament chairman Hidayat Nur Wahid of the PKS, who on 7th March met with some of the cast and crew of the film. Hidayat said he hadn’t seen the film, and he hoped there was no violence or pornography in it, but he had read the book and liked it.

Hidayat said the book’s author, Habiburrahman El-Shiraz, was a good example of a new generation of writers who had attended Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) and who could bring Islamic teachings to the masses. l6

Separately Habiburrahman himself, usually called Kang Abik, 32 years old, says he wants people to know that pesantren schools don’t just teach religion but universal subjects as well.

He has three more Islamic novels due out soon, Langit Mekah Berwarna Merah (Red Sky of Mecca), Bidadari Bermata Bening (Radiant Eyed Angel), and Bulan Madu di Yerussalem (Honeymoon in Jerusalem). l6

I just finished watching AAC. I am appalled that a movie with such a stupid storyline which projects women as either a liar (Noora), a compromising housewife (Aisha), a weak-hearted fool who would rather die than live when her love chooses to marry for money (Maria), and a wishful student who would rather stare at a picture than bloom as a woman (Nurul) can be so popular in Indonesia. Aisha actually has more heroic qualities than Fahri, yet she consented to share the love of that mediocre man with someone else. Maria is actually more intelligent than Fahri, yet she wanted to die when such a mediocre man decides to marry for money. And I don’t want to bother with Nurul and Noora as the two “N’s” represent women in a state of poor spiritual development and not very interesting. At least, Nurul’s character wasn’t fully developed in the film. And what is so special about this Fahri? He marries for money, tells another woman that he loves her after his loving wife rescued him from prison, needs help from a woman to fix his computer, uses his wife’s money for his apartment and brought another woman to live there with them, started crying when Al-Azhar decided to throw him out (as if his worth depends on a stupid university degree as opposed to the depth of his own heart). In fact being in that prison was a blessing for him because he actually met a fellow prisoner who knew more about Islam’s teaching of faith, patience, and egolessness than the sought-after, weak-hearted Fahri. INDONESIAN WOMEN – WAKE UP!!! Don’t you know you are being brainwashed?

This movie is nice, very nice indeed. I have read the book as well. Both are brilliant! A lot of peaceful islamic messages are conveyed in adherence to issues which often happens in reality. Fahri is not that perfect as some commentator says. He was poor remember? and a lot of man chased by hundreds of women in -alone- this country and the same, a woman can be chased after thousands of men. It is a reality. So, it is not something impossible. Anyway, the director has done an excellent piece of art within his limitation (budged, producers authority, etc). Rating would be 9/10. A should watch movie.

I already watch the movie. A bit disappointed actually. Thought it is not as good as the novel.

  6. Supir Bemo says:

    I like the novel actually…

However, there are also things i don’t like for the movie.. like the movie script, and the casts.

Why? This Novel written or designed to create your own theatre of mind. And I think it’s better be left that way…

Please read my post about Film Ayat-ayat Cinta, Adaptasi Gagal?

In the end, It’s all about your own taste… It’s just another movie afterall…

When other movie was made, should or did y’all file your objections?
    ask yourself…

  7. Red says:

  10. achOm says:

    Assalamualaikum…

i just watched the movie in 10 minutes. maybe it’s not proper for me to give comments for the whole movie. well, i was excited to watch it as everyone gives great comments about the movie. personally, i’m a realistic person. i knew earlier that this movie wasn’t set exactly as wrote in the novel. i really love the novel and it has become one of the ways leading me nearer to Allah. Alhamdulillah, the writer really made it well.
but, the movie wasn’t satisfy me enough. how can the characters suddenly speak in indonesian? why can’t they speak in arabic and indonesian language as the subtitle.. most of the time, the movie has been far way from the real story. maybe this kind of story should not be filmed.. the message was confusing for the true muslims. it’s enough to convey messages through the novel..
    wassalam..

  11. aghe says:

The movie is good. I’ve watched it four times (seriously). Still look forward to watching it again. Hahaha… Well yes, it’s not ‘perfect’ still far better than those indonesian horror and cheap comedy movies. Ayat Ayat Cinta features too many indonesian faces in the movie. It would have been better if they use more arabs coz the set should be in Egypt.
My favorite scene is the dialogue between Fahri and his absurd cellmate. “Patience and Ikhlas… That’s Islam” (it gives me shiver).

  12. noora al-said says:

The movie is nice mashalla. However, most of the arabic sentences are grammaticaly incorrect and not pronunced correctly. It would be better to have a native speaker for arabic sentences. Shokran masalama.

  13. Aliaa says:

This is very naive movie and unlogic, and both the novelist and the director has no idea about live in Egypt , so his movie is full of fatal mistakes.

  14. Littlegurl says:

I love this kinda of muvie even though I never watch it yet. But I already read the novel ayat ayat cinta 2 years ago and I wish to read it again. It is so meaningful and those show the truth of Islam…

  15. Azie says:

This film makes me cry and can feel the situation there…
It’s good because there showed about love in islamic…….also a journey in life…
Don’t know why…but this film makes me in love with the story…..

  16. Mashi says:

The movie is very make me sentimental about responsibilitty and care about someone very closed with me…
The story make me feel touch about love, islamic and friendships…
AYAT – AYAT CINTA very good to our people in this world to give the moral and sensibility.

  17. Atiqah says:

Ayat2 Cinta was a great Indonesia film I ever seen.I enjoy when I watched since there have a little comedy on it. As Malaysia people that was great film I watched from Indonesia.Besides, the role in this film are absolutely ROCK!!!.d last thing i want to said BRAVO!!!…keep it up.

  18. foolosophy says:

From where I see it, this just encourages polygamy to families.
No one can treat his wives equally; if anyone can, he must be a God.
Therefore polygamy should be forbidden, not encouraged in any of Indonesian movies.

  19. maira says:

This film is not bad..I like it..but i think ‘novel ayat-ayat cinta’ is more interesting than the film..

  20. NU-bian says:

Score producer John Williams recruited Israeli born violinist Itzhak Perlman to produce the sad lyrical theme for Schindlers list. While Ayat Ayat Cinta was a love story it was a sad story and it was pretty appropriate to use sad music at particular scenes.
Like Ayat Ayat Cinta, Schindlers list was a film based upon a fiction novel. The score was intended to evoke sadness in Schindlers list just as it was in Ayat Ayat Cinta. Like Steven Spieldberg himself did, Jewish organizations utilized the fictional film to strengthen their voices and promote their cause. Ayat Ayat Cinta (AAC) as I understand was also supported by Islamic organizations in Indonesia, I watched the film in a pesantren I was volunteering at. I don’t think Schindlers list had the popularity in Indonesia as it did in America, so its highly unlikely that your average Indonesian movie goer even knew about the (AAC) usages of the Schinders lists theme song, let alone cared.

  21. Noorul Izzah Syarliena Abdullah says:

Ayat-ayat cinta is the best novel that I’ve read, nothing to comments just by saying congratulation on the greatest novel, I’ve support the novelist to wrote more islamic novel.

  22. Arvind says:

I think maria did not convert to islam when she married fahri. after all as a christian she is an ahli kitab right? A muslim man can marry an ahli kitab woman. that explains why she still has the cross tatoo and does not wear the head scarf.

Besides it is normal to see deeply religious men in cairo marring ahli kitab women right? Besides there is no mentioning maria converted.

As for the final scene where maira is praying according to the islamic way, I think its normal for ahli kitab women with muslim men to do that.

I’m not sure about this. someone explain.

  23. dwy says:

Yups, i don’t really like the movie… the story’s far away from the original book.
The book is very good, you should read it.

~sorry for my bad english :-P~

  24. diego says:

    Estimado Sr. AAB,

I found another muslim head-bobbling guy, spouting this “caca” out of his mouth, such as this one: “Egypt and _Indonesia_ are both daulat ul-kufaree (disbelieving states).”.

    Muchas gracias y cordiales saludos,

  25. schmerly says:

    @ NU-bian.. The Jew Hater!!

Schindlers list was a film based upon a fiction novel

Get your fact’s straight, it’s NON fiction.

  26. marafiq says:

the story is just owesome, but their theme instrumental music is same with a Korean 2004 movie ‘Taegukgi’, recall me to the movie, whenever the music sounds. rather disturb my concentration to the story

  27. Astrajingga says:

I don’t know about all this AAC film/book. It may be use Taegukgi soundtrack, but I don’t know. I’m not interested at all with this film. The book, I’ve read several pages, but once I found the Quranic verses which is not creatively interpreted, nor critically discussed, I felt just like reading religion book, it felt like another Jumat sermon. It felt like pengajian ibu-ibu RT.

I’ve never finished reading AAC book, nor I’m not interested in watching the film.

I really wonder what can be really enjoyed in the film or the book.

  28. Man says:

I am deeply offended by your statement

It will be even more fantastic if the male character married all 4 as per Islamic teaching. By ditching the other 3 and married only 1, he is not a good Muslim

By saying things like that your perpetrating the sick stereotypes and prejudices non-muslims or even muslims that poorly understand its teachings (‘All muslims male must have 4 wives/theyre sex maniac/they dont respect women and enslave them/muslims treat females no better than the neandhertals did etc etc’). Clearly if you are a muslim who grasped the fundamental teachings of Islam you will know that polygamy, up to 4 wives is permissible but it is hard to qualify to do so. Al Quran and Sunnah clearly stated you must be able to provide for all the wives materially, psychologically, physically AND fairly, (cant even show favoritism in your treatment or gifts to the wives, if one gets any, the others must be given the same… ). Havent you heard how the Prophet Muhammad rebuked a man who clearly unable to do so yet wishes to marry more? Because to do so would be HARAM or forbidden in our religion.

the surah doesn’t say anything about marrying more than one wife and becoming a better muslim as a result…

This guy got it right. It does states that

Marry women of your choice, two, or three, or four; but if you fear that you shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then only one.” Al-Qur?an (4:3)

The keyword in this verse is the command ‘adil’ – treat them fairly and justly, or you are permitted only one. Its hard when not only you got to give the same material anything you give to one for all, (physically too, you gotta be fit and a ‘superman’ to keep with all of the wives) but also treat them equally (your PR skill is put to the max when you cant show favoritism, this is on a daily basis man, its for keeps the rest of your life) or else we are just reserving a one way ticket to Damnation. Im sick of those that doesnt understands or make no effort to know the truth of the facts of Islamic teachings taking up careless statements like this and twist it to propagate the muslim hating and sick jokes about Islam. Check your facts first. Remember this is the internet and most everything can get twisted even with the best intentions.

  29. MARIA ZAHRA says:

I THINK THIS MOVIE IS TOTALLY DIFFERENT FROM THE REAL MIDDLE EAST PART. THE DIRECTOR SHOULD DO MORE HOMEWORK TO DIRECT SUCH MOVIES.LOOK AT AISYA, SHE’S NOT WEARING A PROPER VEIL LIKE WHAT WOMEN IN MIDDLE EAST WEAR.AND ALSO MORE ASIAN FACES IN ARABS CHARACTERS.

  30. rashdi m. casim says:

The movie is very interesting and as a Muslim brother I recommend this movie to be watched by our muslim brothers and sisters in the Philippines. It has moral values.. I watched it three times with my family and in fact the soundtrack of the movie is very romantic…
