February 13th, 2008 at 6:18 amThe nutbag Islamist right has long been suspicious of Valentine’s Day, but usually they have done so within the frameworks of attacking its consumerism and Christian roots. While it was always a bit stupid, at least it was a logical set of complaints for someone who believes in an austere version of Islam. It is called St. Valentine’s Day, after all, and it does exist mostly to serve the greeting card and chocolate industries.
But Jewish? To be honest, either Mr. Buya Mas’oed Abidin is an idiot or he really admires Jewish people and wants the world to know this. How else to explain attributing to them something so bizarrely unconnected to them!

It’s a very normal position. Even “korban mode” like me doesn’t need a cleric suggestion to see Valentine’s Day with at least a little suspicion. People can see it as the day to express your love or just another gross commercialism like defining Christmas as the day to exchange (read buy) gifts. Both views have their own supporters around the world.
You can get the same view even from the most moderate clerics (I would like to see if Gus Dur endorses Valentine’s Day).
Okay, the “J” word is stupid, but then, the Jewish conspiracy theory was not exactly invented here nor the muslims or Indonesians are the sole users.

A ‘normal’ or reasonable position may be to dislike Valentine’s Day because you do not think it ‘genuine’ or whatever, and to see it only as an expression of excessive consumerism. I for one do not care much for Valentine’s Day (and my partner does not complain).
But it is one thing to dislike a particular practice and to want to regulate the behaviour of others. That is what this guy wants.
You may think it’s silly to buy a box of chocolate on this particular day. But it is ridiculous, and a token of ill will, to view it as something detrimental to public morale or whatever. It is just a box of chocolate. I am sure God can tell the difference.

LOL, they must have been smoking crack cocain. Sounds like they can’t claim anything to be “haram” unless they relate it to the Jews. I find it pathetic, because I see more similarities between Islam and Jewish than any other religions. Do they really think hating others will make them a better believer?
p.s. thank God not all Muslims have the same view; but to think that strong statements come from the so-called “leaders” is really disturbing.

It seems that most clerics are opposing to government regulated laws and simply suggest to have this and that banned.
Why don’t they banned him for having sex. These people can’t stand up to public debate except telling people what to do. Directing all pupils to the mosque? Whose mosque? Meaning everyone must go to the mosque. Pray for what and to who? Christians and others will also be directed there to hear the sermons of Sumpah Pemuda or Valentino?

Muslim clerics do not have authority to “regulate” people’s behaviour. There’s no such authority in, at least, Sunni Islam. What the guy said was simply his opinion; akin to legal opinion of a lawyer or statement of a politician. Everyone is free to express his opinion and to campaign for it. Everyone else is also free to listen or not listen to him
There are lots of other non-muslim non-clerics non-Indonesian people campaigning against Valentine’s Day. It’s, as I said, a very normal stand.
It’s the “Jewish Conspiracy” part that is silly, reflecting his upbringing that contributed all evils in the world to some sinister conspiracies. He didn’t mean actual Jews (I doubt he has met one). Replace “Jewish” with “West” or “Americans” or “Communist” or “Elemen Orde Baru” it will still be acceptable reasoning to him as long he remains the conspiracy victim.
Whether buying chocolate on Valentine’s Day is good or bad, everyone is entitled to their opinion; they will call each other “ridiculous”; and that, Trane, is normal.

They have to tell to their customers that their religion or product is the best and the other is wrong and rubish, how they do that? the simple method is just to reject and denies the competitors product and programs . In this case, Jews Conspirations is easy and our preference of scapegoat.

If you consider religion to be a product which needs to be sold then this product also must compete with other products operating in the same market. If there’s only one product available then the development of this product will stall if not fall back because there’s no healthy competition.
how they do that? the simple method is just to reject and denies the competitors product and programs
Common method is using intimidation and violence towards other “products”.

February 15th, 2008 at 12:19 amIn norway people don’t really celebrate valentine, they say it’s an invention of capitalist who wants to comercializing everything, so we buy gift, pink stuffs, etc. some do celebrate for fun but they share the same opinion.
I think it’s pretty stupid that buya said JEWISH. but I also think you guys are so mean in making comments. seems like to many of us, indonesia doesn’t matter anymore. It’s a hopeless country.

Seriously, look at what happens here in Aberdeen, all men were at the stadium or pub, or at home, watching the game of Aberdeen vs. Bayern Munich. No one cares about Valentine’s Day. (I just posted this idea at my blog too).
Can we invite Ronaldhino back to Indonesia to play, rather than taking photographs with some fans?
